Expert recommendation

As a specialist in East African travel, my expert recommendation is to prioritize an Arusha National Park day trip if you are looking for maximum ecological diversity with minimal travel time. While it lacks the high predator density of the Serengeti, it is the only northern circuit destination where you can combine a traditional game drive with a high-quality walking safari and a serene canoe safari on the Momella Lakes—all within a single day. This park is particularly valuable for birdwatchers and photography enthusiasts due to the rare black-and-white colobus monkeys and the dramatic, cloud-fringed backdrop of Mount Meru, providing a more intimate and physically active wildlife encounter than any other park in the region.

Arusha National Park

Day-by-Day Itinerary Arusha National Park Day Trip

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

Day 1: Arusha to Arusha National Park

In the morning, we will collect you from your hotel in Arusha and take you to the Arusha National Park. The park has an incredible variety of fauna and flora, which cannot fail to impress. Hollywood also chose this region to film the movie “Hatari”, in which Hardy Kruger starred alongside the legendary John Wayne.

Your day trip will include a visit to the Ngurdoto Crater. Buffaloes, waterbucks, giraffes, warthogs, zebras and baboons can be seen all year round, as well as many different bird species.

At the Momella Gate, an armed ranger will be waiting for you to accompany you on the walking safari, which will give you a chance to experience the wildlife up close. Only a few other national parks in Tanzania give you such an opportunity, and it is something that should not be missed.

Lunch will be taken at a picnic place and in the afternoon, you will continue your tour in the safari vehicle through the Arusha National Park. After plenty of time allocated for you to observe the wildlife, we will take you back to Arusha.

Everything You Need to Know About Your Safari

Every safari adventure begins with a question. Whether it’s your first or second time, it’s natural to wonder about the best time to visit, what to pack, or how the journey works. Here, we’ve answered the most common questions travelers ask before booking their Tanzania safari, so you can plan with confidence and look forward to unforgettable memories.

The park is only about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Arusha town, which takes around 40 minutes to drive. This makes it the most accessible national park from the city and ideal for a one-day safari.

No, the park does not have large populations of lions or elephants like Serengeti or Ngorongoro. However, it is home to giraffes, buffalo, zebras, colobus monkeys, and many species of birds, making it an excellent introduction to Tanzania’s wildlife.

Most packages, such as those offered by Tanzania Safari Experience, include park entry fees, professional guide, safari vehicle, fuel, bottled water, and game drives. Optional activities like canoeing or extended walking safaris may cost extra.

Yes, if you are very short on time, a half-day tour is still worthwhile. You can enjoy a game drive and a short walking safari before heading back to the city. It is especially suitable for business travelers or families with limited schedules.

Absolutely. Having a guide ensures safety, maximizes your chances of seeing wildlife, and enriches your experience with expert knowledge. With Tanzania Safari Experience, you will always be accompanied by a professional safari guide and, for walking tours, an armed park ranger.

Light clothing in neutral colors, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a good camera are recommended. Since flights have luggage restrictions, keep your bag small and practical.

Yes, Tanzania is considered one of the safest safari destinations in Africa. National parks are well-managed, and guides are highly trained to ensure your safety. While in cities, it’s always best to take normal precautions, such as avoiding walking alone at night. Traveling with a trusted operator ensures a smooth and safe experience.
