Zanzibar Itinerary 5 Days — Zanzibar Experience
The Ultimate 5-Day Zanzibar Itinerary: A Curated Island Escape
Zanzibar is more than just a tropical backdrop; it is a sensory explosion where the scent of cloves meets the salty spray of the Indian Ocean. Our team at Tanzania Safari Experience has spent decades navigating these winding alleys and turquoise waters to ensure your five-day journey balances historical depth with absolute coastal luxury.
The Perfect 5-Day Zanzibar Itinerary at a Glance

Day-by-Day — Zanzibar Itinerary 5 Days Itinerary
Day 1: Step Into History – Arrival in Stone Town
What is the best way to start a Zanzibar itinerary? Begin in Stone Town to acclimate to the island’s “Pole Pole” (slowly) pace. A single night here allows you to explore UNESCO heritage sites before heading to the beach resorts.
Upon landing at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport 2026, our team will meet you for the brief 15-minute transfer to the heart of Stone Town. This city is a labyrinth of coral-rag houses and intricately carved teak doors.
Our Local Pro-Tip: Don’t just look at the doors; look at the brass studs. Round studs indicate Indian influence (originally designed to ward off elephants), while square carvings often denote Arab lineage.
Spend your first evening at the Forodhani Gardens Night Market. While tourists flock to the seafood skewers, we recommend seeking out the “Zanzibar Pizza”—a savory, thin-crust pocket filled with minced meat, egg, and creamy cheese. It is the definitive taste of the island’s street food culture.

Day 2: Cloves, Culture, and the Move to the North
How do you experience Zanzibar’s culture in one day? Combine a morning walking tour of Stone Town’s historical landmarks with an afternoon visit to a rural spice plantation to understand the island’s dual identity as a trade and agricultural hub.
After a breakfast of fresh papaya and spiced coffee, we lead you through the House of Wonders and the Old Slave Market. It is a somber but necessary experience to understand the island’s complex past.
By midday, we head inland. Zanzibar isn’t called the “Spice Island” for marketing; it is a literal description. At the spice plantations, you won’t just see plants; you’ll taste cinnamon bark stripped from the tree and see how “Lipstick Fruit” (Bixa orellana) got its name.
Comparison: Stone Town vs. The North Coast
Stone Town: Best for photography, history, rooftop dining, and shopping.
Nungwi/Kendwa: Best for swimming (non-tidal), luxury resorts, and vibrant nightlife.
After the tour, we drive north. While many southern beaches are highly tidal (the water retreats for miles), Nungwi and Kendwa offer crystal-clear swimming regardless of the moon’s phase.

Day 3: Turquoise Waters and the Mnemba Atoll
What is the best snorkeling spot in Zanzibar? The Mnemba Atoll, located off the northeast coast, offers the highest visibility and most diverse coral reefs, frequently visited by wild pods of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins.
Today is about the ocean. We suggest boarding a traditional wooden dhow. There is a specific magic in hearing the wind catch a lateen sail while you head toward Mnemba.
Pro-Tip from our Guides: Most boats leave at 9:00 AM. We prefer starting at 8:00 AM. Being the first boat at the reef means the fish haven’t been startled by dozens of engines, giving you a much more intimate underwater experience.
Optional Activities for the Afternoon:
Sunset Dhow Cruise: If you didn’t get enough of the water, a sunset cruise with live Taarab music and local appetizers is the ultimate way to end the day.
Village Visit: Walk through Nungwi village to see the traditional dhow-building yards where craftsmen use hand tools to shape massive hulls.

Day 4: Rare Wildlife or Southern Wonders
Can you see monkeys in Zanzibar? Yes, the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is the only place on Earth to see the endemic Red Colobus Monkey, known for its striking white hair and playful nature.
For Day 4, you have a choice. You can remain in the north for pure relaxation, or we can take you south to Kizimkazi.
If you choose the southern route, we stop at Jozani Forest. Walking through the mahogany trees and the boardwalks of the mangrove swamps feels like entering a different world. Afterward, a dolphin tour in Kizimkazi offers a chance to see these mammals in their natural habitat.
Expert Insight: If you visit Kizimkazi, please ensure your boat captain follows ethical viewing guidelines. At Tanzania Safari Experience, we mandate that our captains never “chase” or “corral” the dolphins, allowing them to approach the boat on their own terms.

Day 5: The Final "Pole Pole" and Departure
How should you spend your last morning in Zanzibar? Use your final hours for a sunrise beach walk followed by a stop at the Darajani Market in Stone Town for authentic spices and hand-woven baskets to take home.
After a slow breakfast overlooking the Indian Ocean, it’s time to pack. If your flight is in the afternoon, we can arrange a final stop in Stone Town. This is the best time to buy your “Big Three” souvenirs:
Zanzibar Spices: Buy them whole (cloves, black pepper, nutmeg) for the longest shelf life.
Kanga/Kitenge: Vibrantly colored fabrics with Swahili proverbs printed on the border.
Essential Oils: Lemongrass and ylang-ylang extracted right on the island.

EXCELLENT Based on 2 reviews Posted on Godson GVerified Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything.Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.Posted on Chris HVerified An absolutely brilliant tour / travel company What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises.Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri HarveyVerified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
