Trip Overview

A 3 days 2 nights Mikumi safari from Dar es Salaam via SGR and safari jeep is a well balanced way to experience one of Tanzania’s most accessible national parks. The journey starts with a modern train ride to Morogoro and continues by road into Mikumi, where open savannahs make wildlife viewing straightforward and rewarding. At Tanzania Safari Experience, we structure this route to ensure smooth transitions, comfortable pacing, and maximum time inside the park.

From our on the ground experience organizing safaris in this region, Mikumi is best understood as a “high visibility” park. Large herds of elephants, giraffes, zebras, and buffalo are commonly seen across the Mkata floodplain, especially during early morning and late afternoon drives. Over three days, travelers get enough time to see different wildlife behaviors, not just quick sightings, which makes the experience more meaningful and complete.

What makes this itinerary reliable is the combination of professional guiding, realistic timing, and carefully selected routes based on animal movement patterns. As your safari experts at Tanzania Safari Experience, we recommend this 3 day format for travelers who want a deeper safari experience than a short trip, but still prefer a convenient connection from Dar es Salaam without long driving fatigue.

Day-by-Day Itinerary 3 Days 2 Nights Mikumi Safari from Dar es Salaam (SGR + Safari Jeep) — Tanzania Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

DAY 1

Dar es Salaam to Mikumi via SGR and Afternoon Game Drive

Morning departure from Dar es Salaam by SGR train to Morogoro, where you meet your Tanzania Safari Experience guide, Laurent or a professional safari driver guide, for a smooth handover into safari mode.

From Morogoro, continue by safari jeep through changing landscapes as you head toward Mikumi National Park. Arrive in time for lunch or a short rest before entering the park for your first afternoon game drive.

This first drive is all about settling into the safari rhythm. Expect elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and possibly lions as the light softens over the plains. Evening transfer to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay near or inside the park.

DAY 2

Full Day Game Drive in Mikumi National Park

Wake up early for a full breakfast before heading out for a full day safari inside Mikumi National Park with packed lunch.

This is your main wildlife day. You explore deeper areas of the park where large herds of elephants, giraffes, wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes move across the open savannah. Your guide will track animal movements and adjust routes based on real-time sightings.

Midday is spent relaxing under shade or at designated picnic areas inside or near the park. In the afternoon, continue with game drives as the light improves again for photography and predator activity.

Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 3

Morning Game Drive and Return to Dar es Salaam

Start early with a final sunrise game drive when the park is quiet and wildlife is most active. This is often the best chance to see predators returning from night movement and herbivores grazing in soft morning light.

After the game drive, exit Mikumi and drive back to Morogoro with scenic views along the way. From Morogoro, board the SGR train back to Dar es Salaam, arriving in the afternoon or evening depending on schedule.

This marks the end of your 3 days 2 nights Mikumi safari experience.

    Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

An absolutely brilliant tour / travel company

What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises. Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri Harvey
