Full Day Game Drive In Mikumi
Your day begins very early in Dar es Salaam as you board the SGR train for Morogoro. The comfortable train journey allows you to relax instead of spending several hours driving on the highway.
After arriving in Morogoro, your guide welcomes you before beginning the road transfer to Mikumi National Park. The drive usually takes around one and a half hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
Once inside the park, your game drive starts immediately. Mikumi is known for its open plains, making wildlife easier to spot than in many forested parks. You may encounter elephants feeding near the road, giraffes walking across the grasslands, zebra herds, buffalo, impalas, wildebeest, and many bird species.
During the middle of the day, your guide selects the best wildlife areas based on recent sightings. A picnic lunch is usually enjoyed at a designated location before continuing the afternoon game drive.
Later in the afternoon, you leave the park and return to Morogoro Station for your train back to Dar es Salaam, arriving in the evening with memories of a full safari completed in a single day.
What animals can you see in Mikumi National Park?
Mikumi National Park supports a wide variety of wildlife including elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, hippos, wildebeest, impalas, warthogs, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species throughout the year.
Wildlife sightings always depend on nature, weather, and animal movement, so no responsible operator can guarantee specific animals.
Elephants and giraffes are among the species guests see most frequently. Zebra, buffalo, impala, and wildebeest are also common across the open plains.
Lions are regularly seen but may require patience. Hippos are often found in pools during the hotter parts of the day.
Bird lovers can enjoy fish eagles, hornbills, kingfishers, herons, bee eaters, and many seasonal migrants.
Wildlife conditions throughout the day
Wildlife activity changes throughout the day, and understanding these patterns helps travelers know what to expect from a one day safari in Mikumi.
| Time | Wildlife Activity | Temperature | Photography |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early morning | Very active predators and grazing animals | Cool | Excellent |
| Midday | Animals rest in shade and near water | Warm to hot | Good |
| Late afternoon | Wildlife becomes active again | Cooler | Excellent |
What many travelers do not realize is that animals often seek shade during the hottest hours. This does not mean the safari becomes boring. Experienced guides know where to search for elephants, hippos, buffalo, and other species during midday.
