Home / Place to Stay / Amboseli Sopa Lodge

Amboseli Sopa Lodge is a comfortable safari lodge set on approximately 200 acres of private land near Amboseli National Park, at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Its location makes it a practical base for travellers exploring Amboseli while providing spacious grounds, gardens and lodge facilities away from the busier park areas.

The lodge is approximately 20 minutes by road from Amboseli National Park, giving guests convenient access to morning and afternoon game drives. Amboseli is particularly known for its large elephant herds and, when the weather is clear, views of Mount Kilimanjaro rising across the plains.

Rooms at Amboseli Sopa Lodge

Amboseli Sopa Lodge has 83 rooms, including a honeymoon suite, six interconnecting rooms and two wheelchair accessible rooms.

The rooms are spread throughout the lodge gardens and use colours, artwork and design elements inspired by Maasai culture.

Depending on the room category, bedding configurations include twin beds, queen beds and double rooms with queen or king size beds.

Rooms generally feature:

• Private veranda
• En suite bathroom
• Shower and toilet
• Mosquito netting
• Writing desk and seating
• Garden surroundings

Interconnecting rooms make the lodge a practical choice for families travelling with children.

Facilities

Amboseli Sopa Lodge has a good range of facilities for relaxing between safari activities.

Guests have access to:

• Large outdoor swimming pool
• Restaurant
• Outdoor dining terrace
• Bars and lounge areas
• Hemingway Bar for sundowner drinks
• Gift and souvenir shop
• Local Maasai craft market
• WiFi in public areas
• Two conference rooms

The main restaurant is connected to the lodge by a bridge over a fishpond, while outdoor areas provide space to relax after a day of game viewing.

Safari Experience

The biggest reason to stay at Amboseli Sopa Lodge is its access to Amboseli National Park.

Amboseli is one of Kenya’s best known destinations for seeing elephants. The open landscape also provides opportunities to see lions, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest and many other species.

The wider Amboseli ecosystem is also rich in birdlife, with hundreds of recorded bird species.

When conditions are clear, Mount Kilimanjaro provides an impressive backdrop during game drives. However, Kilimanjaro can sometimes be hidden by cloud, particularly later in the day, so mountain views should never be guaranteed.

Activities

Activities available from or around Amboseli Sopa Lodge can include:

• Amboseli National Park game drives
• Nature walks
• Bush dining experiences
• Outdoor dining
• Cultural experiences
• Birdwatching
• Swimming and relaxation at the lodge

Some activities may carry an additional charge and should be arranged in advance.

Where Is Amboseli Sopa Lodge Located?

Amboseli Sopa Lodge is located on the edge of the Amboseli ecosystem, approximately 250 kilometres from Nairobi.

By road, the journey from Nairobi generally takes around 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

Travellers can also fly from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to Amboseli Airstrip in approximately 30 minutes. The road transfer from the airstrip to the lodge is around one hour.

Is Amboseli Sopa Lodge Inside Amboseli National Park?

No. Amboseli Sopa Lodge is located on private land outside the national park, with the park approximately 20 minutes away by road.

This is important when comparing accommodation because staying outside the park means each game drive requires travelling between the lodge and the park entrance.

For most travellers this is manageable, but guests wanting the quickest possible early morning access to wildlife may prefer accommodation located inside or immediately beside the park.

Who Is Amboseli Sopa Lodge Best For?

Amboseli Sopa Lodge works particularly well for:

• Couples
• Families
• Small groups
• First time Kenya safari travellers
• Guests wanting a full service lodge rather than a small tented camp
• Travellers combining Amboseli with Nairobi, Tsavo or other Kenya safari destinations

With 83 rooms, this is a relatively large safari lodge. Travellers looking for a small, highly intimate camp may prefer another property.

Amboseli Sopa Lodge Rates

Indicative low season rates can start from approximately:

Standard Room: From $84 per person per night

Premium Room: From $87 per person per night

Kili Suite: From $153 per person per night

Rates can change depending on season, meal plan, room category, residency status and availability. We recommend confirming the exact price for your travel dates before making a safari decision.

    Great Tanzanian vacation

We toured with Tanzania Safari Experience for an eight day trip to Tanzania. Five days of safari and then three days of beach vacation in Zanzibar. They were great to work with and customized everything exactly the way we wanted it. The lodges we were booked in were all incredible, particularly the Lahia Tented Lodge in the Serengeti. Our driver, Jay, seemed to know every road in every national park and as a result the wildlife viewing was unparalleled. There were times where we were the only vehicle seeing lions or hippos. The owner, Laurent, was extremely responsive and any issues we had in-country with our logistics were immediately sorted by him. He genuinely wanted us to have a first-rate experience. The only thing we were unprepared for is that some of the days in the safari vehicle were very long (10+ hours) and the roads can be really rough. But there were plenty of cold drinks in the car and it was worth it to see the wildlife. The safari/beach split was a great way to do the vacation and the beaches of Zanzibar were beautiful with clear blue water.

    Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.
