Trip Overview

A 9 Days Zanzibar Experience itinerary is ideal for travelers who want a relaxed island holiday with airport transfers arranged and seven full days to enjoy Zanzibar at their own pace. You arrive, settle into your accommodation, spend Days 2 through 8 enjoying the beach or choosing optional activities, then transfer back to Zanzibar Airport on Day 9.

This itinerary works especially well after a Tanzania safari, Kilimanjaro climb, honeymoon, family holiday, or longer East Africa trip. There are no compulsory excursions during the seven free days, so you decide whether your holiday is mainly about resting or exploring more of the island.

The biggest advantage is flexibility. Zanzibar has plenty to do, but trying to schedule an excursion every day can turn a beach holiday into another busy itinerary. Seven free days give you enough time for swimming, relaxing, exploring Stone Town, snorkeling, visiting local communities, or simply doing nothing for a day.

At Tanzania Safari Experience, we usually recommend keeping this type of Zanzibar stay deliberately simple. Arrange the important logistics before arrival, particularly your airport transfers and accommodation, then leave enough open time to enjoy the island according to the weather, tides, and how you actually feel once you arrive.

Day-by-Day Itinerary 9 Days Zanzibar Experience itinerary — Tanzania Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

Zanzibar Airport Transfer to Your Accommodation

Your Zanzibar experience begins when you arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. Instead of worrying about finding transport after your flight, your transfer takes you directly from the airport to your selected accommodation, allowing you to settle in and start your island stay comfortably.

Travel time depends heavily on where you are staying. Hotels around Stone Town are close to the airport, while popular beach areas such as Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe and other coastal locations require a longer road transfer.

Once you arrive at your accommodation, we recommend keeping the rest of the day simple. Check in, unpack, walk around the property, find the beach and familiarize yourself with restaurant times and hotel facilities.

If you arrive early enough, you can enjoy the swimming pool or beach during the afternoon. If you arrive in the evening, having dinner at your accommodation and resting is usually the better choice.

There is no reason to force an excursion onto your arrival day. Flight times can change, immigration may take longer than expected, and road traffic varies. Your first day should create an easy start to the holiday.

Day Highlights:
  • Arrival and transfer from the airport
  • Meet and greet at Zanzibar Airport.
  • Free time to rest after your flight.

Life in the Safari

First Full Day on Zanzibar Beach

Your first complete day in Zanzibar is best kept relaxed, particularly if you have arrived after a safari or long international journey. Spend time enjoying the beach, swimming pool and your accommodation while deciding which optional activities you would like to include during the remaining six free days.

Have a relaxed breakfast and take your time exploring the beach around your hotel.

One thing first time visitors quickly notice is that Zanzibar’s coastline changes considerably with the tides. On some beaches the sea can retreat a long distance during low tide before returning later in the day.

This is normal and particularly noticeable along parts of the east coast.

Nungwi and Kendwa are often preferred by travelers who want easier swimming through more of the day, while east coast areas provide wide beaches and very visible tidal changes.

What many travelers do not realize is: there is no need to decide every excursion before your first full day. Once you understand your hotel location, weather and beach conditions, it becomes easier to choose activities that genuinely interest you.

Day Highlights:
  • Zanzibar beach relaxation

Free Day for Beach Time or Stone Town

Day 3 remains completely free, giving you the option of another beach day or your first excursion. If you want to understand Zanzibar beyond its coastline, this can be a good day to explore Stone Town while still keeping several beach days available later in the holiday.

Stone Town is very different from Zanzibar’s resort areas. Its narrow streets, historic buildings, markets, waterfront and daily local activity provide a completely different perspective of the island.

A visit does not need to consume your whole day. Depending on where your hotel is located, you can arrange a half day or longer visit and return to the beach afterward.

Travelers interested in architecture, local history, food and photography usually find Stone Town particularly worthwhile.

If you prefer resting, however, there is nothing wrong with skipping the excursion. This itinerary is intentionally flexible.

Best Choice

Do not schedule Stone Town simply because it appears on every Zanzibar activity list. Visit because you are interested in the culture and history. If your main goal is beach relaxation, using the day at your resort is perfectly reasonable.

Day Highlights:
  • Zanzibar beach relaxation
  • Stone Town tour

Free Day for Zanzibar's Ocean Experiences

Day 4 can be used for one of Zanzibar’s marine activities, including snorkeling, a boat excursion or simply another quiet beach day. Conditions vary by location and weather, so choosing your ocean experience after arriving on the island can sometimes produce a better day than fixing every detail months in advance.

Zanzibar is surrounded by the Indian Ocean, so marine activities are naturally one of the main reasons people visit.

Snorkeling opportunities depend on where you stay and which excursion you choose. Some trips involve traveling by vehicle before boarding a boat, while others depart relatively close to beach resorts.

Ask about total travel time rather than only the advertised activity duration. A short boat activity can still become a long excursion if your accommodation is far from the departure point.

Bring sun protection, drinking water and a waterproof bag for personal belongings.

If the weather is not suitable for the ocean, simply keep the day free and move the activity to another day.

A Completely Free Zanzibar Day

Day 5 is intentionally left without a planned excursion because having genuine free time is one of the advantages of spending nine days in Zanzibar. By this point you already understand your resort, the beach and the rhythm of the island, so you can decide exactly how you want to spend the day.

Sleep later if you want.

Take breakfast without watching the clock.

Spend the morning swimming, reading or walking along the beach, then have lunch and decide what to do during the afternoon.

Travelers sometimes assume every holiday day needs an attraction attached to it. On a beach holiday, that thinking often creates unnecessary fatigue.

Common Mistake

Booking seven excursions simply because you have seven free days.

Better Alternative

Choose two or three experiences that genuinely matter to you and leave the remaining time free. Most guests enjoy Zanzibar more when there is space between activities.

Free Day for Culture, Food or Local Experiences

Day 6 gives you another opportunity to explore Zanzibar beyond the resort if you wish. Depending on your interests, you can consider a cultural experience, local food experience, spice related excursion or another part of the coastline while keeping the entire day optional.

The important point is to choose experiences based on what interests you rather than trying to complete a checklist.

Travelers who enjoy food may prefer a local culinary experience.

Those interested in everyday island life may want something more community focused.

Others may simply decide that the beach is exactly where they want to remain.

Because this itinerary gives you several free days, changing your plan does not affect the overall trip.

Another Full Day to Enjoy Your Resort

Day 7 is ideal for returning to a slower pace after any excursions taken earlier in the week. Enjoying the facilities you have already paid for is part of the Zanzibar experience, particularly when staying at a good beachfront resort with a swimming pool, restaurant, spa or direct beach access.

This is often when travelers fully settle into their holiday.

By now you know the best swimming times, where you like to eat and which part of the beach you prefer.

If your hotel offers spa treatments or water activities, you may decide to arrange something directly.

Couples may prefer a quiet dinner later in the evening, while families can keep the day completely open.

One advantage of a nine day itinerary is that you do not need to feel guilty about spending an entire day at your accommodation.

Final Full Day in Zanzibar

Your final full day should remain flexible so that you can repeat something you particularly enjoyed, take an activity you postponed because of weather, shop for souvenirs or simply spend one last uninterrupted day beside the Indian Ocean.

Avoid turning the last day into a complicated sequence of activities.

You will need to pack and prepare for departure the following day, so keeping part of the afternoon or evening free makes the end of the holiday much easier.

If you want souvenirs, this can be a practical day to organize them rather than rushing on departure morning.

It is also worth confirming your airport pickup time and checking your flight departure details.

Spend your final evening enjoying Zanzibar instead of worrying about logistics. Your airport transfer should already be arranged.

Transfer to Zanzibar Airport and Fly Home

On Day 9, your driver collects you from your hotel and transfers you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport for your departure flight. Pickup time is planned around your flight schedule, hotel location and the amount of time required to reach the airport comfortably.

Do not judge the pickup time only by the distance shown on a map. Zanzibar traffic can vary, particularly when traveling from beach areas toward Zanzibar City.

For international flights, allow sufficient airport time for check in, security and departure procedures.

Your luggage should ideally be packed the previous evening so departure morning stays simple.

After eight nights in Zanzibar, you transfer to the airport and continue your journey home or to your next destination.

    Great Tanzanian vacation

We toured with Tanzania Safari Experience for an eight day trip to Tanzania. Five days of safari and then three days of beach vacation in Zanzibar. They were great to work with and customized everything exactly the way we wanted it. The lodges we were booked in were all incredible, particularly the Lahia Tented Lodge in the Serengeti. Our driver, Jay, seemed to know every road in every national park and as a result the wildlife viewing was unparalleled. There were times where we were the only vehicle seeing lions or hippos. The owner, Laurent, was extremely responsive and any issues we had in-country with our logistics were immediately sorted by him. He genuinely wanted us to have a first-rate experience. The only thing we were unprepared for is that some of the days in the safari vehicle were very long (10+ hours) and the roads can be really rough. But there were plenty of cold drinks in the car and it was worth it to see the wildlife. The safari/beach split was a great way to do the vacation and the beaches of Zanzibar were beautiful with clear blue water.

    Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

Everything You Need to Know About Your Safari

Planning a Tanzania safari often comes with important questions, from choosing the right travel season to understanding what to pack, where to stay, and what to expect each day. We have answered the questions travelers ask most often before booking, helping you prepare properly and plan your safari with confidence.

This itinerary is best for travelers who want Zanzibar to feel like a holiday rather than a tightly scheduled sightseeing tour. With seven unrestricted days between arrival and departure, you can choose activities gradually, rest when you want, and adjust your plans according to weather, tides, energy levels and personal interests.

It works particularly well for guests arriving after several days on safari. A Tanzania safari normally involves early mornings, long game drives and changing accommodations. Going directly into another heavily scheduled itinerary can become tiring.

Families also benefit from the flexibility because children do not always want a full day excursion every day. Some days can simply be spent around the swimming pool or beach.

Couples and honeymooners can combine private time with selected experiences such as a sunset cruise, Stone Town visit, snorkeling trip or special dinner without filling every day with organized activities.

Expert Recommendation from Tanzania Safari Experience

If Zanzibar follows your safari, we usually recommend leaving at least your first complete beach day relatively quiet. It gives you time to recover from safari travel before deciding how active you want the rest of your island holiday to be.
