Tour Overview

Our 5 Days Zanzibar Experience is a four-night Zanzibar holiday combining dolphin watching, Jozani Forest, Safari Blue, Stone Town, Prison Island, and a final night in Nungwi.

This trip suits couples, friends, and families who want to explore the island rather than spend their entire stay at a resort. You will have three full excursion days, with time to settle in after arrival and enjoy the northern coast before departure.

The difference is in the planning. Your accommodation location affects how early you leave, how much time you spend driving, and how comfortably the activities fit together. Tanzania Safari Experience plans your transfers and overnight stops around the route.

Five days means five calendar days, including arrival and departure—not five full sightseeing days. We recommend this itinerary for an active island holiday; if you also want several uninterrupted beach days, extend your stay in Nungwi.

Quick Zanzibar Holiday Overview

The 5 Days Zanzibar Experience brings together marine activities, forest wildlife, historic streets, and beach accommodation within four nights. It is an active holiday with boat trips and guided walks, rather than a resort-only stay. Your hotel selection and flight times determine how much additional beach time fits around the excursions.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Zanzibar and Transfer to Your Accommodation

Zanzibar Full Board

On arrival at Zanzibar Airport, meet your transfer driver and travel to your selected accommodation. We arrange the pickup around your flight details so you can begin the holiday with a clear plan.

The journey length depends on where you stay. A hotel near Stone Town involves a shorter transfer than accommodation on the northern coast. Your proposal will identify the hotel location and provide an approximate transfer time.

After check-in, the remainder of the day is free. Depending on your arrival time and hotel facilities, you may relax by the pool, walk along the beach, or enjoy dinner before the excursions begin.

For this route, we recommend choosing the first three nights with the southern and southwestern activities in mind, then staying in Nungwi on Day 4. This reduces repeated journeys between the north and south of the island.

Activities: Transfer From Zanzibar Airport

Day 2

Dolphin Watching and Jozani Forest

Zanzibar Full Board

Begin the day with a transfer to the departure point for your dolphin excursion. An early departure may be needed, depending on your hotel and the boat schedule. Breakfast arrangements should be agreed with your accommodation beforehand.

The marine excursion focuses on watching wild dolphins when they are present. Sightings depend on their movements and sea conditions. We plan this as a wildlife observation experience, with space for the animals to move naturally; swimming alongside dolphins is not a promised part of the day.

Continue to Jozani Forest for a guided visit. Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is home to Zanzibar’s endemic red colobus monkeys, making it an important stop for travelers interested in the island’s wildlife.

Your visit may combine forest paths and mangrove boardwalks, according to the agreed tour. Wear comfortable shoes with grip, carry drinking water, and keep your camera ready without approaching or feeding the monkeys.

Return to your accommodation after the excursions. This is a full day involving both road and boat travel, so a quiet evening works well.

Activities: Safari Blue Zanzibar Tour, Zanzibar Jozani Forest Tour

Day 3

Full-Day Safari Blue Zanzibar

Zanzibar Full Board

After breakfast, transfer to the departure point for your Safari Blue excursion. Allow the day for the marine experience rather than adding another major activity afterward.

The original Safari Blue experience explores the Menai Bay Conservation Area by traditional wooden dhow. Its advertised activities include guided snorkeling, a sandbank visit, swimming, and a seafood barbecue with tropical fruit. The day’s sequence is influenced by tides and conditions.

Your Tanzania Safari Experience proposal will identify the booked excursion and its inclusions, including transfers, snorkeling equipment, food, and drinks. Tell us about dietary requirements when requesting your quote so suitable arrangements can be checked.

Bring swimwear, a towel, sun protection, and a waterproof bag for your phone. If you prefer to remain aboard during snorkeling, let us know beforehand so we can assess whether the excursion suits your expectations.

Return to your hotel after the boat trip. An evening without additional touring gives you time to shower, rest, and enjoy dinner.

Activities: Safari Blue Zanzibar Tour

Day 4

Stone Town, Prison Island, and Transfer to Nungwi

Stone Town Full Board

Check out after breakfast and travel to Stone Town for a guided walking tour. Today also includes Prison Island and the road transfer to Nungwi, so an early start helps keep the schedule comfortable.

Explore Stone Town’s narrow streets, carved doorways, markets, and waterfront with your guide. The walk provides context for what you see while allowing time for photographs and selected stops. Comfortable shoes and light clothing that covers shoulders and knees work well for town visits.

Take a boat to Prison Island, also known as Changuu, before returning to Stone Town. The island visit commonly centers on its giant tortoises and historic buildings. Your confirmed itinerary will specify the visit arrangements and any entrance fees.

After the island excursion, continue by road to Nungwi and check into your accommodation. Your luggage travels with the arranged transfer rather than accompanying you on the walking and boat tours.

This is the busiest day of the package. Expect to reach Nungwi later in the day rather than have a full beach afternoon. We keep additional shopping stops and extra excursions optional so the evening remains yours.

Activities: Zanzibar Prison Island Tour, Zanzibar Spice Tour

Day 5

Transfer to Zanzibar Airport

Enjoy breakfast before your transfer to Zanzibar Airport. If your flight departs later, there may be time for a beach walk or a relaxed morning at the hotel.

The departure time must account for the road journey from Nungwi, traffic, and your airline’s check-in requirements. We confirm the pickup against your flight details rather than treating the airport as a short local transfer.

An early flight may require leaving before breakfast service. Where possible, request a breakfast box from the hotel the previous evening.

Your Zanzibar holiday ends at the airport. If you would like more time on the northern coast, additional nights can be added before the departure transfer.

    Great Tanzanian vacation

We toured with Tanzania Safari Experience for an eight day trip to Tanzania. Five days of safari and then three days of beach vacation in Zanzibar. They were great to work with and customized everything exactly the way we wanted it. The lodges we were booked in were all incredible, particularly the Lahia Tented Lodge in the Serengeti. Our driver, Jay, seemed to know every road in every national park and as a result the wildlife viewing was unparalleled. There were times where we were the only vehicle seeing lions or hippos. The owner, Laurent, was extremely responsive and any issues we had in-country with our logistics were immediately sorted by him. He genuinely wanted us to have a first-rate experience. The only thing we were unprepared for is that some of the days in the safari vehicle were very long (10+ hours) and the roads can be really rough. But there were plenty of cold drinks in the car and it was worth it to see the wildlife. The safari/beach split was a great way to do the vacation and the beaches of Zanzibar were beautiful with clear blue water.

    Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where Should You Stay for This Itinerary?

For this itinerary, accommodation should support the excursion route as well as your preferred holiday atmosphere. We recommend considering a practical base for the first three nights and moving to Nungwi after the Day 4 sightseeing. Starting in Nungwi can mean longer transfers to the southern activities on consecutive mornings.

Accommodation choice Main advantage Tradeoff
Stone Town or nearby for Nights 1–3 Convenient for town sightseeing and access toward southwestern departures Less of a beach-resort atmosphere
Southern accommodation for Nights 1–3 Useful for the dolphin and forest day Longer journey when visiting Stone Town
Nungwi throughout One hotel and a consistent beach setting More driving for southern excursions
A practical first base, then Nungwi Balances touring logistics with a northern beach finish Requires one hotel change

Expert Recommendation from Tanzania Safari Experience: Choose the route before choosing the hotel. On a short holiday, a well-located property can improve the experience more than an upgraded room that adds hours of driving.

Hotel selection also needs to match your priorities. Tell us whether you value direct beach access, a pool, quiet evenings, family rooms, or a particular meal plan. These details make the accommodation recommendation more useful than a star rating alone.

Is This a Relaxing Zanzibar Beach Holiday?

This package includes coastal accommodation and some leisure time, but its main purpose is to explore Zanzibar through three full activity days. It suits travelers who enjoy changing scenery and guided experiences. For a holiday centered on long beach mornings and resort afternoons, we recommend extending the stay or reducing the excursions.

The main distinction is between staying by the beach and having free time at the beach. A beachfront hotel does not create a leisure day when you leave early for a tour and return late.

Day 1 offers relaxation according to your arrival time. Day 4 gives you an evening in Nungwi, while Day 5 depends on your flight schedule.

Best Choice: Add two or three nights in Nungwi if you want both this sightseeing route and meaningful time to unwind. Keeping the extra nights at the same final hotel avoids another move.

What Affects the Boat Trips and Daily Timing?

Tides, wind, sea conditions, hotel location, and departure schedules all influence Zanzibar’s marine excursions. A full-day tour does not follow the same sequence every day, and dolphin sightings remain a natural possibility rather than a certainty. We confirm practical timings with the excursion team when arranging your holiday.

An early morning departure can mean cooler conditions for transfers, but it does not guarantee wildlife sightings or a calm crossing.

Midday is usually when sun protection matters most on exposed boats, sandbanks, and walking routes. Keep water accessible and use shade when available.

Later in the day, photography can benefit from softer light. Whether that coincides with beach time depends on the tour’s return and your hotel location.

If marine conditions require a change, we assess the available arrangements with the excursion provider. Keep the three touring days free of separately booked, time-sensitive commitments.

What Should You Pack for Five Days in Zanzibar?

Pack for warm coastal conditions, boat excursions, forest walks, and town sightseeing rather than beach use alone. A small day bag makes the touring days easier, while comfortable footwear matters for Jozani and Stone Town. Keep swimwear, sun protection, and valuables accessible without carrying your main luggage on excursions.

Bring:

  • Lightweight clothing and swimwear.
  • Clothing covering shoulders and knees for town visits.
  • Comfortable walking shoes and sandals suitable for boat boarding.
  • A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
  • A towel and waterproof bag for marine excursions.
  • A reusable water bottle and portable charger.
  • Any personal medication you routinely need.

For photographs, a phone is useful for landscapes and streets. A camera with zoom helps capture monkeys without moving closer. Ask permission before photographing people, and protect equipment from spray during boat crossings.

How Much Does the 5 Days Zanzibar Experience Cost?

The cost depends on travel dates, accommodation, room arrangements, number of travelers, meal plan, and whether excursions are shared or private. Tanzania Safari Experience prepares a quote around those choices. The useful comparison is the complete package total and its stated inclusions, rather than the hotel price on its own.

Your proposal should clearly identify:

Item What to confirm
Accommodation Four nights, hotel names, room category, and occupancy
Meals Hotel meal plan and excursion lunches
Transfers Arrival, departure, excursion transport, and hotel change
Excursions The booked activities and guiding arrangements
Boat arrangements Shared or private departures
Fees Included entrance charges and any amounts payable locally
Extras Optional activities, drinks, tips, and personal spending

Do not assume that a private airport transfer makes every boat excursion private. We state the arrangements in your proposal so you can choose the experience that suits your budget and expectations.
