Game Drive In Ngorongoro Crater
A game drive in Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most exciting safari experiences in Tanzania because the wildlife is concentrated inside a huge ancient volcanic caldera. As you descend from the crater rim, the view opens into a wide natural bowl filled with grasslands, forests, lakes, and swamps — all surrounded by steep green walls.
Inside the crater, you can see many animals in a short time, including lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeests, hippos, hyenas, jackals, and many bird species. Ngorongoro is also one of the best places in Tanzania to try to spot the rare black rhino, although sightings are never guaranteed because this is still wild nature.
The game drive usually feels very different from Serengeti because the landscape is more compact and dramatic. You drive across open plains, pass by Lake Magadi where flamingos may be seen, stop near hippo pools, and enjoy close wildlife viewing with the crater walls always in the background. It is a beautiful mix of scenery, wildlife, and photography opportunities.
As your safari experts at Tanzania Safari Experience, we recommend an early morning crater descent because animals are more active, the light is better for photos, and you get more time to enjoy the crater before it becomes busy.
