Kilimanjaro Airport to Karatu – Arrival and Transfer
Your 6 day Tanzania safari begins when you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). After completing immigration procedures and collecting your luggage, you will meet your professional safari guide from Tanzania Safari Experience, who will welcome you to Tanzania, assist with your bags, and introduce you to your private 4×4 safari vehicle.
From the airport, you will travel directly to Karatu, a town located near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Expect approximately 3.5–4.5 hours of driving, depending on traffic, road conditions, and any stops along the way. This is primarily a transfer day rather than a wildlife-viewing day, so we recommend arriving early enough to complete the journey comfortably before evening.
We deliberately choose Karatu for the first overnight stay because it makes the following morning much easier. Instead of starting Day 2 with a long transfer from Arusha, you will already be relatively close to the Ngorongoro entrance. This allows an earlier start, more energy for the crater experience, and a better chance of spending the cooler morning hours observing wildlife.
If your flight arrives late, or you would prefer a shorter journey after international travel, we can arrange your first night in Arusha instead. The following morning, your guide will collect you early for the drive toward Ngorongoro Crater. This alternative provides more rest immediately after your flight, but it means an earlier departure and approximately 2–3 additional hours of driving before reaching the crater entrance compared with staying in Karatu.
Upon arriving at your lodge in Karatu, you will check in, enjoy dinner, and rest before your first major game drive.
Accommodation: Mid-range or luxury lodge in Karatu.
Meals: Dinner, subject to arrival time and lodge arrangements.
Tanzania Safari Experience Recommendation: We generally recommend staying in Karatu if your flight lands early enough. This is not simply about accommodation preference. It is about positioning yourself closer to Ngorongoro so that the following day's wildlife experience begins with less road fatigue.
