Its location in the Mara Triangle gives guests access to areas used by migrating wildebeest and zebras as they move through the wider Serengeti and Masai Mara ecosystem.

However, it is important to understand how the migration works. The herds do not follow an exact timetable. Their movements depend heavily on rainfall, grass conditions and water availability.

For this reason, staying at Mara Serena gives you a good location from which to search for the migration, but no lodge can guarantee that the herds or a river crossing will be directly outside the property during your stay.

Yes, it is possible during the right part of the migration season. The Mara Triangle contains important sections of the migration route, and your safari guide can drive to areas where wildebeest are gathering near the river.

The main thing clients should understand is that Mara River crossings cannot be scheduled.

Thousands of wildebeest may arrive near the river and stand there for several hours. Sometimes they remain for an entire day. They may suddenly begin crossing, or they may turn around and move somewhere else.

That is why we recommend giving yourself enough time if the Mara River crossing is one of the main reasons for your safari. Spending three or more nights in the Masai Mara gives your guide more opportunities to follow the herds and respond to their movements.

A one night stay gives you far less flexibility.

The Mara Triangle provides excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year, so Mara Serena is not only a migration season lodge.

During game drives you may encounter lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, cheetahs, hyenas, hippos, crocodiles and many different antelope species.

The Mara Triangle is also important for black rhino conservation, making it one of the areas where travelers have a chance of seeing black rhinos in their natural habitat.

Leopards are also present, although they are more secretive and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Birdlife is another major part of the experience, with numerous raptors, water birds and grassland species found throughout the reserve.

Your exact sightings will always depend on wildlife movements, weather conditions and the amount of time you spend on game drives.

Yes. Mara Serena Safari Lodge can be a very practical choice for families because it combines a strong safari location with the facilities of a larger lodge.

The property has 74 rooms, a swimming pool, restaurant, lounge areas and plenty of communal space, which can make family travel easier than staying in a very small bush camp.

Families travelling with teenagers may particularly appreciate having more space around the property and the opportunity to relax at the swimming pool between safari activities.

It can also work well for multi generational families travelling with parents, children and grandparents.

One thing to consider is that the lodge is built along a hillside and has several stairs. If anyone in your family has mobility concerns, we recommend requesting a room closer to the main reception and restaurant areas.

Neither option is automatically better. It depends on the type of safari experience you prefer.

Mara Serena Safari Lodge is better suited to travelers who want more facilities and a traditional lodge environment. You have a swimming pool, restaurant, bar, spa services and a relatively large property with permanent rooms.

A smaller tented safari camp normally provides a more intimate atmosphere, fewer guests and a stronger feeling of being directly connected to the bush.

If you value privacy and a very small camp environment, Mara Serena may feel larger than what you are looking for.

If you prefer comfort, established facilities, a family friendly setting and a convenient location inside the Mara Triangle, Mara Serena becomes a very strong option.

We normally recommend choosing accommodation according to the experience you want rather than simply comparing which property is more expensive.

The easiest option for many travelers is to fly from Nairobi Wilson Airport to an airstrip in the Masai Mara, with Serena Airstrip providing convenient access to the lodge.

The flight significantly reduces travel time compared with driving from Nairobi.

After landing, guests are transferred by safari vehicle from the airstrip to the lodge. Serena Airstrip is located very close to the property, so the final transfer is relatively short.

You can also reach Mara Serena by road from Nairobi or as part of a longer Kenya safari itinerary.

A road safari makes sense if you are combining the Masai Mara with destinations such as Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru or other parts of Kenya. For travelers with limited time, flying is usually the more efficient option.

We generally recommend at least two to three nights, with three nights being the better option for most safari travelers.

A two night stay normally gives you one full safari day plus game drives on your arrival and departure days, depending on your travel schedule.

Three nights gives you much more flexibility. You can spend more time exploring different parts of the Mara Triangle, search for predators, follow wildlife movements and take a full day game drive if appropriate.

If your main objective is the Great Migration or a possible Mara River crossing, additional time becomes even more valuable.

Wildlife does not operate according to your itinerary. Giving yourself several days allows your guide to react to what is actually happening in the reserve instead of rushing through the safari.

Yes. A hot air balloon safari can normally be arranged at an additional cost for guests staying at Mara Serena.

The experience begins very early in the morning, usually before sunrise. Guests are transferred to the launch area before the balloon takes off over the Masai Mara.

From the air, you can see the scale of the plains, river systems and wildlife habitat from a completely different perspective.

The experience is particularly popular during the migration months, but balloon flights operate during other periods as well, depending on weather conditions.

Because spaces are limited, we recommend booking the balloon safari before arriving in the Masai Mara, especially during July, August, September and October.

Weather conditions can occasionally cause cancellations because ballooning depends on safe flying conditions.

There is no single best month for every traveler because the right time depends on what you want to see.

July to October is the most popular period for travelers interested in the Great Migration. Wildebeest and zebras may be moving through the Masai Mara, and there is a possibility of witnessing river crossings.

January and February can also offer excellent general wildlife viewing, with relatively dry conditions making animals easier to locate around water sources.

March to May is generally wetter. The landscape becomes greener, visitor numbers can be lower and accommodation rates may also be more favorable. However, rain can affect road conditions.

November and early December bring greener scenery following the short rains while resident wildlife remains present throughout the reserve.

If your priority is wildlife rather than specifically the migration, Mara Serena can therefore be considered throughout the year.

For photographers, this elevated setting can also provide interesting landscape opportunities, particularly during early morning and late afternoon when the light changes across the plains.
