Trip Overview

Seven days in Zanzibar gives you enough time to experience the island’s history, culture, marine life, spice farms, and beaches without feeling rushed. It is the ideal length of stay for travelers who want more than just a beach holiday.

At Tanzania Safari Experience, we often help travelers combine a Tanzania safari with a relaxing Zanzibar escape. After days of wildlife viewing in Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, or Lake Manyara, Zanzibar offers a completely different side of Tanzania. White-sand beaches replace savannah plains, and the rhythm slows down.

This 7-day Zanzibar itinerary combines Stone Town’s rich heritage, wildlife encounters, spice experiences, marine adventures, and some of the island’s most famous coastal locations. For simplicity and comfort, all accommodation throughout the trip is at Tembo House Hotel, one of Stone Town’s most historic and recognizable beachfront hotels.

As of 2026, this remains one of our favorite Zanzibar routes for first-time visitors who want to see the island properly rather than spending the entire week on one beach.

Quick Direct Guide

A 7-day Zanzibar itinerary is best for travelers who want to combine history, culture, beaches, snorkeling, dolphins, spice tours, and local experiences into one well-balanced holiday.

Why This Zanzibar Itinerary Matters

A seven-day stay allows visitors to experience the real Zanzibar rather than only seeing one side of the island.

Many travelers arrive expecting beaches alone. What they discover is a destination with deep history, unique Swahili culture, spice plantations, coral reefs, marine conservation areas, and traditional fishing villages.

In our experience, travelers who spend at least a week in Zanzibar leave with a much deeper appreciation of the island than those who only stay two or three nights after safari.

Seven days also creates flexibility. You can enjoy activities while still having time to relax by the ocean.

Our Local Experience and Honest Opinion

The biggest mistake we see is travelers treating Zanzibar as simply a beach destination.

What many visitors do not realize is that Zanzibar is one of East Africa’s most culturally significant places. Stone Town alone contains centuries of African, Arab, Indian, and European influences.

We usually recommend beginning with cultural experiences before moving into beach activities. This allows travelers to understand Zanzibar’s story before relaxing along the coast.

If I were planning this trip for my own family, I would follow this exact route because it balances activity and relaxation very well.

Another thing travelers often underestimate is travel time. Zanzibar may look small on a map, but roads can be slower than expected. Starting activities early generally creates a much better experience.

Day-by-Day Itinerary Zanzibar Itinerary 7 Days — Tanzania Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

DAY 1

Stone Town Arrival & Heritage

On arrival at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, you are welcomed and transferred to Stone Town in about 15 minutes. After checking in at Tembo House Hotel, the afternoon is dedicated to exploring the historic heart of Zanzibar. You walk through narrow streets filled with carved wooden doors, old merchant houses, and centuries of Swahili, Arab, and Indian influence. Key stops include the Old Fort, the Old Slave Market, and the Anglican Cathedral, each telling a powerful part of Zanzibar’s history. As evening arrives, the waterfront comes alive at Forodhani Gardens, where you can enjoy fresh seafood, Zanzibar pizza, and local snacks while watching the sunset over the ocean.

DAY 2

Prison Island & Spice Farm Experience

The morning begins with a short boat ride to Prison Island, where you meet the famous giant Aldabra tortoises and explore the island’s old quarantine buildings. The atmosphere is calm, with clear water and wide ocean views surrounding you. After returning to Stone Town, the journey continues inland to a spice farm where you experience Zanzibar’s famous spice heritage firsthand. You see, smell, and taste fresh cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, and many other spices growing naturally in the fields. The day ends with a relaxed sunset dinner overlooking Stone Town, giving you a perfect mix of nature, culture, and local flavor.

DAY 3

Jozani Forest & Transfer to Paje

After breakfast, you check out and travel toward Zanzibar’s east coast. Along the way, you stop at Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, home to the rare Zanzibar Red Colobus monkeys. The forest walk takes you through mangroves and dense greenery where wildlife is often easy to spot. After the visit, you continue to Paje and settle into your beachfront stay. The rest of the afternoon is free to relax on the long white sandy beach or explore the small cafés and kite-surfing scene. In the evening, you enjoy a laid-back dinner by the ocean with music and sea breeze.

DAY 4

Dolphin Tour & Blue Lagoon Snorkeling

The day starts early with a drive to Kizimkazi on the southern coast for a boat trip in search of wild dolphins. The experience is natural and depends on ocean conditions, but sightings are common in this area. After the boat excursion, you continue to the Blue Lagoon, where the shallow waters and coral formations make it ideal for snorkeling. The water is calm, clear, and full of tropical fish. Later, you stop at Michamvi for lunch or drinks at The Rock Restaurant area, one of Zanzibar’s most iconic viewpoints. The evening is relaxed back at your east coast hotel.

DAY 5

Mnemba Atoll Marine Adventure

After breakfast, you head to Matemwe for a boat trip to Mnemba Atoll, one of the best snorkeling and diving areas in Zanzibar. The marine life here is rich, with colorful coral reefs, tropical fish, and sometimes dolphins and sea turtles. The water visibility is often excellent, making it a highlight for ocean lovers. You enjoy time in the water followed by a traditional Swahili seafood barbecue either on a sandbank or aboard the boat. In the evening, you return to Paje and relax, often ending the day with a beach walk or a quiet sunset moment.

DAY 6

Nungwi Beaches & Sunset Dhow Cruise

You travel from the east coast to the northern part of Zanzibar, arriving in Nungwi or Kendwa. This area is known for its swimmable beaches regardless of tides and its soft white sand. You visit the Baraka Natural Aquarium, where you can see and swim with rehabilitated sea turtles in a natural lagoon environment. The afternoon is spent enjoying the beach, swimming, or relaxing under palm trees. As the sun begins to set, you board a traditional dhow cruise and sail along the coastline while watching the sky change colors over the Indian Ocean.

DAY 7

Final Morning & Departure

Your final morning in Zanzibar is slow and peaceful. You enjoy breakfast by the beach and take one last swim in the warm turquoise water if time allows. Depending on your flight schedule, you may explore local shops for spices, souvenirs, or handmade crafts. Later, you begin your transfer back to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Stone Town for your departure, marking the end of your Zanzibar journey.

Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

An absolutely brilliant tour / travel company

What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises. Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri Harvey
