A 9 Days Zanzibar Experience itinerary is ideal for travelers who want a relaxed island holiday with airport transfers arranged and seven full days to enjoy Zanzibar at their own pace. You arrive, settle into your accommodation, spend Days 2 through 8 enjoying the beach or choosing optional activities, then transfer back to Zanzibar Airport on Day 9.
This itinerary works especially well after a Tanzania safari, Kilimanjaro climb, honeymoon, family holiday, or longer East Africa trip. There are no compulsory excursions during the seven free days, so you decide whether your holiday is mainly about resting or exploring more of the island.
The biggest advantage is flexibility. Zanzibar has plenty to do, but trying to schedule an excursion every day can turn a beach holiday into another busy itinerary. Seven free days give you enough time for swimming, relaxing, exploring Stone Town, snorkeling, visiting local communities, or simply doing nothing for a day.
At Tanzania Safari Experience, we usually recommend keeping this type of Zanzibar stay deliberately simple. Arrange the important logistics before arrival, particularly your airport transfers and accommodation, then leave enough open time to enjoy the island according to the weather, tides, and how you actually feel once you arrive.

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.
Your Zanzibar experience begins when you arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. Instead of worrying about finding transport after your flight, your transfer takes you directly from the airport to your selected accommodation, allowing you to settle in and start your island stay comfortably.
Travel time depends heavily on where you are staying. Hotels around Stone Town are close to the airport, while popular beach areas such as Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe and other coastal locations require a longer road transfer.
Once you arrive at your accommodation, we recommend keeping the rest of the day simple. Check in, unpack, walk around the property, find the beach and familiarize yourself with restaurant times and hotel facilities.
If you arrive early enough, you can enjoy the swimming pool or beach during the afternoon. If you arrive in the evening, having dinner at your accommodation and resting is usually the better choice.
There is no reason to force an excursion onto your arrival day. Flight times can change, immigration may take longer than expected, and road traffic varies. Your first day should create an easy start to the holiday.
Your first complete day in Zanzibar is best kept relaxed, particularly if you have arrived after a safari or long international journey. Spend time enjoying the beach, swimming pool and your accommodation while deciding which optional activities you would like to include during the remaining six free days.
Have a relaxed breakfast and take your time exploring the beach around your hotel.
One thing first time visitors quickly notice is that Zanzibar’s coastline changes considerably with the tides. On some beaches the sea can retreat a long distance during low tide before returning later in the day.
This is normal and particularly noticeable along parts of the east coast.
Nungwi and Kendwa are often preferred by travelers who want easier swimming through more of the day, while east coast areas provide wide beaches and very visible tidal changes.
What many travelers do not realize is: there is no need to decide every excursion before your first full day. Once you understand your hotel location, weather and beach conditions, it becomes easier to choose activities that genuinely interest you.
Day 3 remains completely free, giving you the option of another beach day or your first excursion. If you want to understand Zanzibar beyond its coastline, this can be a good day to explore Stone Town while still keeping several beach days available later in the holiday.
Stone Town is very different from Zanzibar’s resort areas. Its narrow streets, historic buildings, markets, waterfront and daily local activity provide a completely different perspective of the island.
A visit does not need to consume your whole day. Depending on where your hotel is located, you can arrange a half day or longer visit and return to the beach afterward.
Travelers interested in architecture, local history, food and photography usually find Stone Town particularly worthwhile.
If you prefer resting, however, there is nothing wrong with skipping the excursion. This itinerary is intentionally flexible.
Best Choice
Do not schedule Stone Town simply because it appears on every Zanzibar activity list. Visit because you are interested in the culture and history. If your main goal is beach relaxation, using the day at your resort is perfectly reasonable.
Day 4 can be used for one of Zanzibar’s marine activities, including snorkeling, a boat excursion or simply another quiet beach day. Conditions vary by location and weather, so choosing your ocean experience after arriving on the island can sometimes produce a better day than fixing every detail months in advance.
Zanzibar is surrounded by the Indian Ocean, so marine activities are naturally one of the main reasons people visit.
Snorkeling opportunities depend on where you stay and which excursion you choose. Some trips involve traveling by vehicle before boarding a boat, while others depart relatively close to beach resorts.
Ask about total travel time rather than only the advertised activity duration. A short boat activity can still become a long excursion if your accommodation is far from the departure point.
Bring sun protection, drinking water and a waterproof bag for personal belongings.
If the weather is not suitable for the ocean, simply keep the day free and move the activity to another day.
Day 5 is intentionally left without a planned excursion because having genuine free time is one of the advantages of spending nine days in Zanzibar. By this point you already understand your resort, the beach and the rhythm of the island, so you can decide exactly how you want to spend the day.
Sleep later if you want.
Take breakfast without watching the clock.
Spend the morning swimming, reading or walking along the beach, then have lunch and decide what to do during the afternoon.
Travelers sometimes assume every holiday day needs an attraction attached to it. On a beach holiday, that thinking often creates unnecessary fatigue.
Common Mistake
Booking seven excursions simply because you have seven free days.
Better Alternative
Choose two or three experiences that genuinely matter to you and leave the remaining time free. Most guests enjoy Zanzibar more when there is space between activities.
Day 6 gives you another opportunity to explore Zanzibar beyond the resort if you wish. Depending on your interests, you can consider a cultural experience, local food experience, spice related excursion or another part of the coastline while keeping the entire day optional.
The important point is to choose experiences based on what interests you rather than trying to complete a checklist.
Travelers who enjoy food may prefer a local culinary experience.
Those interested in everyday island life may want something more community focused.
Others may simply decide that the beach is exactly where they want to remain.
Because this itinerary gives you several free days, changing your plan does not affect the overall trip.
Day 7 is ideal for returning to a slower pace after any excursions taken earlier in the week. Enjoying the facilities you have already paid for is part of the Zanzibar experience, particularly when staying at a good beachfront resort with a swimming pool, restaurant, spa or direct beach access.
This is often when travelers fully settle into their holiday.
By now you know the best swimming times, where you like to eat and which part of the beach you prefer.
If your hotel offers spa treatments or water activities, you may decide to arrange something directly.
Couples may prefer a quiet dinner later in the evening, while families can keep the day completely open.
One advantage of a nine day itinerary is that you do not need to feel guilty about spending an entire day at your accommodation.
Your final full day should remain flexible so that you can repeat something you particularly enjoyed, take an activity you postponed because of weather, shop for souvenirs or simply spend one last uninterrupted day beside the Indian Ocean.
Avoid turning the last day into a complicated sequence of activities.
You will need to pack and prepare for departure the following day, so keeping part of the afternoon or evening free makes the end of the holiday much easier.
If you want souvenirs, this can be a practical day to organize them rather than rushing on departure morning.
It is also worth confirming your airport pickup time and checking your flight departure details.
Spend your final evening enjoying Zanzibar instead of worrying about logistics. Your airport transfer should already be arranged.
On Day 9, your driver collects you from your hotel and transfers you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport for your departure flight. Pickup time is planned around your flight schedule, hotel location and the amount of time required to reach the airport comfortably.
Do not judge the pickup time only by the distance shown on a map. Zanzibar traffic can vary, particularly when traveling from beach areas toward Zanzibar City.
For international flights, allow sufficient airport time for check in, security and departure procedures.
Your luggage should ideally be packed the previous evening so departure morning stays simple.
After eight nights in Zanzibar, you transfer to the airport and continue your journey home or to your next destination.

We toured with Tanzania Safari Experience for an eight day trip to Tanzania. Five days of safari and then three days of beach vacation in Zanzibar. They were great to work with and customized everything exactly the way we wanted it. The lodges we were booked in were all incredible, particularly the Lahia Tented Lodge in the Serengeti. Our driver, Jay, seemed to know every road in every national park and as a result the wildlife viewing was unparalleled. There were times where we were the only vehicle seeing lions or hippos. The owner, Laurent, was extremely responsive and any issues we had in-country with our logistics were immediately sorted by him. He genuinely wanted us to have a first-rate experience. The only thing we were unprepared for is that some of the days in the safari vehicle were very long (10+ hours) and the roads can be really rough. But there were plenty of cold drinks in the car and it was worth it to see the wildlife. The safari/beach split was a great way to do the vacation and the beaches of Zanzibar were beautiful with clear blue water.
This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.
We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

Planning a Tanzania safari often comes with important questions, from choosing the right travel season to understanding what to pack, where to stay, and what to expect each day. We have answered the questions travelers ask most often before booking, helping you prepare properly and plan your safari with confidence.
This itinerary is best for travelers who want Zanzibar to feel like a holiday rather than a tightly scheduled sightseeing tour. With seven unrestricted days between arrival and departure, you can choose activities gradually, rest when you want, and adjust your plans according to weather, tides, energy levels and personal interests.
It works particularly well for guests arriving after several days on safari. A Tanzania safari normally involves early mornings, long game drives and changing accommodations. Going directly into another heavily scheduled itinerary can become tiring.
Families also benefit from the flexibility because children do not always want a full day excursion every day. Some days can simply be spent around the swimming pool or beach.
Couples and honeymooners can combine private time with selected experiences such as a sunset cruise, Stone Town visit, snorkeling trip or special dinner without filling every day with organized activities.
Expert Recommendation from Tanzania Safari Experience
If Zanzibar follows your safari, we usually recommend leaving at least your first complete beach day relatively quiet. It gives you time to recover from safari travel before deciding how active you want the rest of your island holiday to be.
Seven free days give you enough time to combine beach relaxation with selected Zanzibar experiences without making the holiday unnecessarily busy. Most travelers are better served choosing a few activities they genuinely care about and keeping several days available for swimming, resort time, weather changes and spontaneous decisions.
Possible experiences can include Stone Town, snorkeling, boat trips, beach exploration, cultural experiences, local food experiences, spa treatments and sunset activities.
You do not need to include all of them.
A balanced week might involve two or three excursion days with the other days reserved for the beach.
| Travel Style | How to Use the Seven Free Days |
| Mainly relaxation | 5 or 6 beach days with 1 or 2 excursions |
| Balanced holiday | 3 or 4 beach days with 3 or 4 activities |
| Active traveler | Several excursions with quieter mornings or afternoons |
| Honeymoon | Mostly private beach time with selected romantic experiences |
| Family holiday | Flexible beach days with a few family friendly activities |
The best area to stay in Zanzibar depends on how you want to spend your seven free days. Nungwi and Kendwa suit travelers focused on swimming and resort life, while Paje and Jambiani offer a different east coast atmosphere. Matemwe suits a quieter beach stay, while Stone Town is better for culture than a traditional beach holiday.
Choosing the correct location matters because Zanzibar is larger than many visitors expect.
Nungwi is in northern Zanzibar and has a wide selection of resorts, restaurants and activities.
It works well for travelers who want an active beach area and relatively convenient swimming conditions.
Kendwa is another strong option for travelers whose main priority is the beach.
It is particularly popular with guests who want to spend substantial time swimming and relaxing around their resort.
Paje is on Zanzibar’s east coast.
It has a lively atmosphere and is particularly known for the combination of beach life and water based activities.
The tides are considerably more noticeable here.
Jambiani offers a long east coast beach and a more spread out atmosphere.
It suits travelers who enjoy a slower coastal setting.
Matemwe works well for travelers looking for a quieter stay and access to northern east coast marine experiences.
Stone Town is the right choice if culture, restaurants and historical surroundings matter more than spending every day directly on a resort beach.
For a nine day beach holiday, many travelers prefer spending most nights on the coast rather than remaining in Stone Town for the entire stay.
Tides are one of the most important factors to understand before choosing a Zanzibar beach. On many east coast beaches the Indian Ocean retreats significantly at low tide, meaning swimming directly in front of your hotel may be easier at certain times of day than others.
This does not mean the beach is poor.
It simply creates a different type of coastal experience.
At low tide, large areas of sand and shallow water may become exposed. Later, the sea returns and swimming conditions change again.
The northwestern beaches generally experience less dramatic changes from a visitor’s perspective, which is one reason Nungwi and Kendwa are popular with travelers who prioritize swimming.
Expert Recommendation from Tanzania Safari Experience
If swimming whenever you want is one of your main priorities, tell us before choosing your hotel. Your accommodation location can affect your Zanzibar experience more than upgrading from one room category to another.
Zanzibar changes throughout the day, and understanding those differences helps you use your free days better. Mornings are generally comfortable for walks and activities, midday is hotter and better suited to swimming or shade, while late afternoon and evening are often the most pleasant times for relaxing outdoors and photography.
Mornings are useful for excursions because temperatures are usually more comfortable.
If you enjoy walking along the beach or taking photographs, early light is often easier to work with than harsh midday sunshine.
The middle of the day can become hot.
This is a good time for swimming, lunch, resting around the hotel or staying under shade.
Sun protection becomes especially important.
Late afternoon temperatures become more comfortable.
Depending on which coast you are staying on, you can enjoy the changing light, beach walks, drinks or dinner.
Western and northwestern locations are particularly attractive for sunset views.
Zanzibar can be visited throughout much of the year, but June through October and January through February are particularly popular for beach holidays. Weather never follows a perfect calendar, however, and travelers should understand that tropical islands can still experience occasional rain even during generally favorable periods.
These months are commonly chosen because conditions are generally drier and temperatures comfortable.
They also combine well with Tanzania safari travel, particularly during the main dry season.
Short rains can occur.
Rain is often intermittent rather than necessarily lasting throughout every day.
This can be a very good period for Zanzibar.
Conditions are generally warm, making it popular with travelers escaping colder climates.
This period generally brings the heavier rains.
Some travelers still visit, but anyone primarily interested in predictable beach conditions should understand the greater possibility of extended rain.
| Period | General Conditions | Suitable For |
| June to October | Generally dry and comfortable | Beach holidays and safari combinations |
| November | Short rains possible | Flexible travelers |
| December to February | Warm and generally favorable | Beach holidays and winter escapes |
| March to May | Higher rainfall | Travelers comfortable with wetter conditions |
Zanzibar combines extremely well with a Tanzania safari because the two experiences are completely different. Safari days are active and often begin early, while Zanzibar gives you time to sleep longer, relax beside the ocean and recover before flying home.
For most travelers, we prefer putting Zanzibar after the safari.
There is a simple reason.
During safari, you want enough energy for early morning game drives and long days inside the national parks. If the beach comes afterward, you can completely relax without worrying about preserving energy for the next part of the journey.
A typical combination might include Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire followed by this eight night Zanzibar stay.
If this were our own trip, we would: complete the wildlife safari first and use Zanzibar as the slower ending to the journey.
Pack light clothing, swimwear, sun protection and comfortable footwear for a nine day Zanzibar stay. You do not need complicated safari equipment for a beach holiday, but strong sunshine, occasional rain, boat activities and visits away from the resort mean a few practical items can make the trip considerably easier.
Bring comfortable lightweight clothing suitable for warm weather.
A light layer can still be useful during evenings, air conditioned spaces or travel days.
For the beach, bring swimwear, sunglasses, sunscreen and something easy to wear over your swimming clothes.
A dry bag or waterproof phone pouch can be useful if you plan to take boat trips.
Comfortable walking footwear is worth bringing if you intend to explore Stone Town.
Nine days is not too long for Zanzibar if your goal is a genuine beach holiday rather than a short extension. With seven full days available, you have enough time to rest, take several excursions and still return home without feeling that every day was scheduled.
For travelers who dislike beach holidays and want constant sightseeing, nine days may feel longer than necessary.
But for honeymooners, families, couples and guests arriving after safari, it provides valuable breathing room.
The key is choosing the right hotel and location.
Seven free days in a resort you do not enjoy will feel long. Seven days at the right beach, with the right balance between relaxation and activities, can pass very quickly.
Keeping Days 2 through 8 free gives you control over your Zanzibar holiday instead of forcing you to follow activities chosen before you understand the weather, tides or your own energy levels. It also makes it easier to move an ocean excursion if conditions are better on another day.
This approach does not mean doing nothing.
It means deciding intentionally.
For example, you could spend Day 2 relaxing, visit Stone Town on Day 3, snorkel on Day 4, rest on Days 5 and 6, arrange another activity on Day 7 and keep Day 8 completely free.
Another traveler could use all seven days at the beach.
Both are following exactly the same itinerary.
