Zanzibar Itinerary 4 Days: Stone Town, Spice Farms & Kendwa Beach

Updated: 2026

Four days in Zanzibar can feel short, but when it is planned well, you can enjoy history, spice culture, beach relaxation, and a smooth island transfer without feeling rushed. At Tanzania Safari Experience, our team has arranged this route for travelers who want a simple, beautiful Zanzibar escape after safari, before safari, or as a standalone beach holiday.

This Zanzibar Itinerary 4 Days is built around two strong experiences: the old cultural soul of Stone Town and the peaceful beach life of Kendwa in northern Zanzibar. You begin in Stone Town at Tembo Hotel, explore the islandโ€™s history and spice countryside, then finish with soft white sand, clear water, and sunsets at Sun Set Kendwa Beach Hotel.

Quick Overview of This 4-Day Zanzibar Itinerary

This itinerary combines Stone Town history, a spice farm visit, and Kendwa Beach relaxation in four days, with airport transfers, guided touring, and beach time included.

Day Main Experience Overnight Meals
Day 1 Airport pick-up, transfer to Stone Town Tembo Hotel Breakfast
Day 2 Stone Town tour, spice farm, transfer to Kendwa Sun Set Kendwa Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3 Relax at Kendwa Beach Sun Set Kendwa Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4 Kendwa Beach relaxation, airport transfer Extra night can be arranged Breakfast, Lunch

This route works especially well for couples, honeymooners, families, solo travelers, and safari guests who want a soft landing after dusty game drives in Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, or Lake Manyara.

The smart part of this itinerary is the movement. You do not waste your beach time by staying too long in traffic or changing hotels every night. You sleep first in Stone Town, where the history is close, then move north to Kendwa, where the ocean is the main reason to stay.

Day-by-Day Itinerary Zanzibar Itinerary 4 Days — Tanzania Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Hereโ€™s what you can expect day by day.

Day 1: Airport Pick-up and Transfer to Tembo Hotel in Stone Town

Day 1 is about arrival, settling in, and experiencing Stone Townโ€™s old coastal atmosphere from a comfortable heritage hotel near the ocean.

When you arrive at Zanzibar Airport, our team will pick you up and transfer you to Stone Town, the old city and cultural heart of Zanzibar. This is where the islandโ€™s history feels alive. You will see narrow streets, old buildings, carved wooden doors, busy markets, local shops, and the Indian Ocean just nearby.

You will stay at Tembo Hotel, one of the well-known heritage-style hotels in Stone Town. The hotel is popular because it gives you a strong sense of old Zanzibar. It is close to the seafront, close to historical streets, and comfortable enough for travelers who want charm without feeling disconnected from the town.

Stone Town has changed very little in its old layout over the years. That is why walking through it feels different from staying at a normal beach resort. You are not just sleeping in a hotel; you are staying inside a place with memory.

Day Highlights:
  • Meet and greet at Zanzibar Airport.
  • Private transfer to Stone Town.
  • Check in at Tembo Hotel.
  • Free time to rest after your flight.
  • Optional evening walk near the seafront.
  • Overnight in Stone Town.

Day 2: Stone Town Tour, Spice Farm and Transfer to Kendwa Beach

Day 2 gives you Zanzibarโ€™s strongest cultural combination: historic Stone Town, carved doors, old streets, spice plantations, and an evening arrival at Kendwa Beach.

After breakfast, you will begin a guided tour of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is the best way to understand Zanzibar beyond the beach. A guide helps you read the town properly: the old doors, the narrow streets, the Arab and Swahili influence, the trading history, and the small details you would miss alone.

You will see Zanzibarโ€™s famous wooden doors, known for their beautiful carvings and old architectural meaning. Some doors reflect Indian influence, some show Arab style, and some carry details linked to status, trade, and family history.

Stone Town is not a place to rush. The beauty is in the small turns: a hidden courtyard, a carved balcony, children walking home from school, a shop selling spices, the smell of grilled seafood, and the sound of life moving through old coral-stone buildings.

After lunch, you will continue to the countryside for a spice plantation tour. Zanzibar is famous as the Spice Island, and this visit helps you understand why. You may see, smell, and taste spices such as cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, vanilla, and black pepper.

This is one of the best experiences for families and first-time visitors because it is simple, fun, and easy to understand. You do not just hear the name of a spice; you see how it grows.

In the evening, you continue north to Kendwa Beach, one of Zanzibarโ€™s most loved beach areas. Kendwa is known for white sand, clear water, calm swimming conditions, and beautiful sunsets.

Stone Town: What Makes It Special

Stone Town is special because it tells Zanzibarโ€™s story through old streets, carved doors, markets, seafront buildings, and centuries of Indian Ocean trade culture.

Stone Town can look confusing at first. The streets are narrow, and many paths twist like a maze. But that is part of its charm. A guided walk makes the area easier to understand.

During the tour, you may see:

  • Old carved Zanzibar doors.
  • The seafront area.
  • Historic buildings and narrow alleys.
  • Local markets.
  • Cultural and architectural landmarks.
  • Places connected to Zanzibarโ€™s trading past.

A mistake many travelers make is treating Stone Town like a quick photo stop. That is poor planning. The town is more powerful when someone explains what you are seeing. Without context, it is just old buildings. With context, it becomes the story of Zanzibar.

Spice Farm: The Countryside Side of Zanzibar

The spice farm experience shows why Zanzibar is called the Spice Island, with plants like cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, and tropical fruits growing in the countryside.

The spice plantation visit is relaxed and interactive. You walk through a farm, smell leaves, taste fruits, and learn how spices are used for food, medicine, culture, and trade.

For many clients, this becomes one of the most surprising parts of the trip. They expect the beach to be the highlight, then later they say, โ€œThe spice tour was actually very interesting.โ€

Local tip: wear light clothes and comfortable shoes. The spice farm is not difficult, but Zanzibar can be hot and humid. A small bottle of water, sunglasses, and a hat help a lot.

Why Kendwa Beach Is a Strong Choice

Kendwa Beach is one of Zanzibarโ€™s best areas for swimming, sunsets, soft sand, and a relaxed beach holiday atmosphere on the northern coast.

Kendwa is different from many beaches in Zanzibar because swimming can be easier here compared to areas where the tide moves far out. This makes it a favorite for travelers who want simple beach enjoyment.

You can walk on the sand, swim, relax with a drink, take sunset photos, or just enjoy the ocean view without needing a busy activity schedule.

Our team often recommends Kendwa for short Zanzibar stays because it gives a strong beach feeling quickly. You arrive and immediately understand why people dream about Zanzibar.

Day 3: Full Day Relaxing at Kendwa Beach

Day 3 is your full beach day, perfect for swimming, resting, reading, snorkeling, diving, taking photos, and enjoying the Indian Ocean without rushing.

This is the day to slow down. After safari or long travel, many guests underestimate how much they need rest. Kendwa is perfect for that.

You can wake up late, enjoy breakfast, walk along the beach, swim, relax with a book, or simply watch the ocean change colors during the day. The water can shift from pale turquoise to deep blue depending on the light.

For guests who want something more active, Kendwa also offers access to ocean activities such as snorkeling or scuba diving. These can usually be arranged depending on weather, sea conditions, and availability.

Optional Activities at Kendwa Beach

Kendwa Beach is ideal for relaxation, but travelers can also add snorkeling, scuba diving, sunset walks, beach photography, or a romantic dinner by the ocean.

Here are the best ways to enjoy your free day:

Activity Best For Notes
Swimming Most travelers Kendwa is one of the better swimming beaches
Snorkeling Ocean lovers Best when sea conditions are calm
Scuba diving Adventure travelers Can be arranged locally
Beach walk Couples, families Best in morning or sunset
Reading and resting Safari guests Perfect after early safari wake-ups
Sunset photography Everyone Kendwa sunsets are beautiful

Do not feel guilty for doing nothing on Day 3. That is the point. A good Zanzibar itinerary must leave space to breathe. Travel is not only about movement; sometimes the best memory is sitting quietly and watching the ocean.

Pro Tip from Our Local Team

For the best Kendwa beach photos, go out before sunset, not only during sunset. The light starts becoming soft earlier, and the sand looks warmer and cleaner.

Also, protect your phone from sand and saltwater. Many travelers learn this the hard way. Zanzibar beach days are beautiful, but ocean air and wet hands are not friendly to electronics.

If you want to buy local souvenirs, compare slowly and politely. Bargaining is normal, but respect matters. A smile goes far in Zanzibar.

Day 4: Kendwa Beach to Zanzibar Airport

Day 4 is a relaxed final morning at Kendwa Beach before your transfer to Zanzibar Airport for your onward flight or next destination.

On your last day, enjoy your final hours by the beach. Have a good breakfast, walk along the white sand, take photos, relax by the pool, or swim one last time before departure.

In the afternoon, we will transfer you to the airport for your onward destination. If your flight is late, you can enjoy more beach time depending on hotel check-out rules and transfer timing.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch
Accommodation: Extra night can be arranged at additional cost

This day is intentionally simple. Many poor itineraries make the final day too busy, and guests end up stressed. We prefer a clean ending: breakfast, beach, transfer, flight.

Can You Add an Extra Night?

Yes, an extra night can be arranged if you want more beach time, a slower departure, or a smoother connection with your international flight.

Adding one more night makes the trip more comfortable, especially if your flight schedule is late, early, or uncertain. It also helps if you want to add more activities like Mnemba snorkeling, Nungwi visit, sunset dhow, or another beach day.

For many couples, 5 days feels more relaxed than 4 days. But if your time is limited, this 4-day version still gives you the main highlights.

Day Highlights:
  • Relaxing at the hotel
  • Transfer to the airport

    Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything weโ€™d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered โ€” a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all โ€” comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Marikiโ€™s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else โ€” he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife โ€” we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos โ€” the lot. As a first safari, I couldnโ€™t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didnโ€™t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. Heโ€™d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If youโ€™re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, Iโ€™d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

An absolutely brilliant tour / travel company

What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises. Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri Harvey
