5 Day Tanzania Budget Camping Safari (Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro)

Home / 5 Day Tanzania Budget Camping Safari (Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro)

Exploring the vast plains of the Serengeti doesn’t require a fortune, but it does require a sense of adventure and a willingness to trade marble bathrooms for the soundtrack of the African night. My team and I at Tanzania Safari Experience have refined this 5-day circuit to ensure you witness the Great Migration and the “Big Five” while keeping costs low and authenticity high.

The 5-Day Serengeti Budget Safari Overview

A 5-day Serengeti budget safari typically costs between $900 and $1,100 per person. This immersive camping journey covers Tarangire, the central Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater in a rugged 4×4 vehicle.

This specific route is designed for those who want to maximize animal sightings. By choosing a camping safari, you aren’t just saving money; you are removing the barriers between you and the wilderness. You’ll be accompanied by a professional driver-guide and a private chef who handles all meals, allowing you to focus entirely on the horizon.

Group SizeBudget Camping (Per Person)Mid-Range Lodging (Per Person)
1 Person$1,100$1,800
2-3 People$1,050$1,700
4-5 People$980$1,600
6+ People$900$1,500

Pro-Tip: If you are traveling solo, ask us about joining a group. Sharing a jeep is the single most effective way to drop your per-person cost from $1,100 down to the $900 range without sacrificing the quality of the experience.

Day-by-Day Itinerary 5 Day Tanzania Budget Camping Safari (Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro)

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire – The Land of Giants

Tarangire National Park is famous for its massive baobab trees and the highest concentration of elephants in Tanzania, offering a spectacular introduction to the country’s diverse wildlife and landscapes.

We begin by picking you up in Arusha. After a quick briefing with your guide and chef, we drive two hours to Tarangire. While many travelers rush to the Serengeti, I always tell our guests that Tarangire is the “hidden gem” of the north.

The park is dominated by the Tarangire River. During the dry season, this is the only permanent water source for miles, drawing thousands of animals. You’ll see elephant families—sometimes forty or fifty strong—interacting under the shade of ancient baobabs.

What to watch for: Keep your eyes on the high branches of the sausage trees. While Lake Manyara is famous for tree-climbing lions, the lions in Tarangire have also adopted this habit to escape the heat and flies

Day 2: The Journey to the Endless Plains

The drive from Mto Wa Mbu to the Serengeti takes roughly six hours, transiting through the Ngorongoro Highlands and offering breathtaking views of the crater before descending into the savannah.

This is a big travel day, but the scenery is unparalleled. We make a 20-minute stop at the Ngorongoro Crater viewpoint. Standing at the rim, you’ll look down into a lost world 600 meters below.

The Cultural Choice: We offer an optional stop at a Maasai Boma. While some call it touristy, it is a genuine opportunity to see how the Maasai coexist with wildlife. You’ll learn about their history as lion hunters—a tradition now replaced by conservation—and their unique diet.

By late afternoon, we reach the Seronera region, the heart of the Serengeti. We’ll do a “sunset game drive” on our way to the camp. There is nothing quite like the Serengeti sky turning violet as a leopard begins its evening hunt.

Day 3: Full Day in the Serengeti – Following the Rhythm

A full day in the Serengeti allows for deep exploration of the Seronera Valley, where permanent water sources ensure high predator densities, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs, year-round.

Today, we are flexible. Depending on the month of your visit in 2026, we may head north, south, east, or west to track the Great Migration—over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebras on their eternal search for green grass.

Our team focuses on “strategic partnerships” in the wild. You’ll notice zebras and wildebeests often travel together; the zebra has excellent memory for paths, while the wildebeest has a keen sense for water.

Pro-Tip: Bring a good pair of binoculars (we provide one pair per jeep, but having your own is better). In the vastness of the Serengeti, a “rock” in the distance often turns out to be a pride of lions resting on a kopje.

Note: This is a public campsite. Animals are not fenced out. It is common to hear hyenas “whooping” or see buffaloes grazing near the tents. It is perfectly safe as long as you follow your guide’s instructions.

Day 4: Sunrise over the Savannah and the Rim

Morning game drives in the Serengeti offer the best chance to see predators in action before the heat of the day sets in, followed by a scenic drive to the Ngorongoro rim.

We wake up at 6:00 AM. The air is chilly, so bring a fleece. This is the “magic hour.” Predators are most active now, and the golden light is a photographer’s dream. After a mid-day “brunch” back at camp, we pack up and head toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

We will spend the night at Simba Campsite, perched right on the edge of the crater rim. Because of the altitude, it gets very cold here.

About Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater is a विशाल volcanic caldera in northern Tanzania, often called Africa’s “Garden of Eden” for its rich wildlife and stunning landscapes. Formed millions of years ago, it shelters an incredible concentration of animals, including the Big Five, within its lush floor of grasslands, forests, and a soda lake. With its natural enclosure and breathtaking views from the rim, it offers one of the most unique and reliable safari experiences in Africa.

Day 5: The Ngorongoro Crater – Africa's Eden

The Ngorongoro Crater is a self-contained ecosystem where you can spot the rare Black Rhino and the densest population of lions in Africa within a single morning.

After an early breakfast, we descend 650 meters into the crater floor. This is a collapsed volcano—a caldera—and the views are surreal. Because the walls are so steep, many animals stay here year-round. It is the best place in Tanzania to see the Big Five in a single day.

We’ll have a picnic lunch by the hippo pool before ascending the rim and driving back to Arusha. We usually arrive in the city by late afternoon, marking the end of your 2026 adventure.

Essential Safari Packing Checklist

To keep your budget safari comfortable, you need the right gear. Don’t overpack; space in the jeep is limited.

  • Clothing: Layers are key. A heavy fleece for mornings and light moisture-wicking shirts for the afternoons.

  • Dust Protection: A buff or scarf to cover your face during dusty drives.

  • Power: A portable power bank (though our jeeps have charging ports).

  • Headlamp: Essential for navigating the campsite at night.

  • Cash: For tipping your guide and chef (standard is $20-$30 per day for the guide and $15-$20 for the chef, split among the group).

Understanding the Costs: Where Does Your Money Go?

People often ask why a “budget” safari still costs $200+ per day. In Tanzania, the government fees are significant.

  1. Park Entry Fees: Roughly $70-$80 per person per day for the Serengeti.

  2. Crater Service Fee: A flat fee of about $295 per vehicle every time we enter the Ngorongoro Crater.

  3. Camping Fees: Paid to the national parks to use the public sites.

  4. Logistics: 18% VAT, fuel, specialized vehicle maintenance, and the salaries of your expert crew.

By booking with Tanzania Safari Experience, you ensure that these fees are handled correctly and that you are supporting local guides and chefs directly.

Shared vs. Private Safari: Making the Choice

While our focus today is the 5 Days Shared Budget Camping Safari, it’s important to understand what you are choosing.

  • Shared Safari: You share the 4×4 Land Cruiser with up to 6 other people. It is social, fun, and significantly cheaper.

  • Private Safari: You have the vehicle to yourself. This allows for total flexibility in schedule—if you want to watch a dung beetle for an hour, you can.

At Tanzania Safari Experience, we ensure that even our shared groups never feel crowded. Every guest is guaranteed a window seat with a pop-up roof view.

What to Expect at the Campsites

Tanzanian public campsites provide basic but functional facilities, including shared bathrooms, dining halls, and dedicated areas for our professional chefs to prepare fresh meals.

I’ve had many travelers ask if they have to cook. The answer is no. You will travel with a dedicated safari chef. While you are out tracking lions, they are back at camp preparing “Safari Spaghetti,” fresh soups, and local fruits.

We've got you covered

Our tours are top-notch but give you great value. The price we tell you upfront covers most of the costs for one person, like flights and all transfers.

Everything You Need to Know About Your Safari

Every safari adventure begins with a question. Whether it’s your first or second time, it’s natural to wonder about the best time to visit, what to pack, or how the journey works. Here, we’ve answered the most common questions travelers ask before booking their Tanzania safari, so you can plan with confidence and look forward to unforgettable memories.

Yes. While there are no fences and animals like hyenas or elephants may wander through, they generally ignore the tents. Your guide will provide strict safety protocols to ensure a secure experience.

Expect hearty, fresh meals. Breakfast typically includes eggs, sausages, and fruit. Lunch is often a picnic box with chicken, sandwiches, and juice. Dinner is a hot three-course meal with soup, a main (rice/pasta/meat), and dessert.

Generally, no. This is a time to disconnect. However, some areas of the Seronera campsite may have intermittent mobile data (3G/4G) if you have a local SIM card.

Our shared groups typically consist of 4 to 6 people to ensure everyone has a window seat and ample space for camera gear.

Yes, public campsites in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro have basic shower blocks. Note that hot water is often limited or solar-dependent, so mid-afternoon showers are usually the warmest.

Tipping is a standard practice in Tanzania. A general guideline is $15–$20 per day for the driver-guide and $10–$15 per day for the chef, usually split among the group members.

Yes, Tanzania is considered one of the safest safari destinations in Africa. National parks are well-managed, and guides are highly trained to ensure your safety. While in cities, it’s always best to take normal precautions, such as avoiding walking alone at night. Traveling with a trusted operator ensures a smooth and safe experience.
