How Much Does a Tanzania Big Five Safari Cost?
The cost of a Big Five safari depends on the number of travellers, accommodation standard, travel season, transport method and time spent inside the national parks. The following prices are useful planning estimates, but every Tanzania Safari Experience itinerary is priced according to the traveller’s actual route and preferences.
Budget Safari Range
A budget Big Five safari normally starts from approximately US$400 to US$500 per person per day. This option may use simple lodges, permanent camps or public camping while still including a professional driver guide, safari vehicle, park fees and planned game drives.
Mid Range Safari Cost
A mid range safari commonly costs around US$500 to US$750 per person per day. Travellers can expect comfortable lodges or tented camps, private transport and carefully selected locations that reduce unnecessary driving between wildlife areas.
Luxury Safari Pricing
Luxury Big Five safaris often begin from approximately US$750 per person per day and can increase considerably. Premium camps, larger suites, private activities, internal flights and exclusive services are among the main factors that raise the final price.
What Increases the Cost of a Big Five Safari?
More Nights in Serengeti
Spending additional nights in Serengeti gives your guide more time to search different wildlife areas instead of rushing through the park. It improves your chances of finding lions, leopards, elephants and buffalo, but it also adds accommodation, park fees, meals and vehicle costs.
Ngorongoro Crater Visit
The Ngorongoro Crater is especially important for travellers hoping to see the black rhino. Crater entry and vehicle fees make this part of the itinerary more expensive, but removing it purely to reduce the price can significantly weaken a safari designed around seeing all five animals.
Private Safari Vehicle
A private vehicle gives you control over game drive times, photography stops and the amount of time spent at each sighting. The cost is shared among the travellers in the vehicle, so the price per person is normally lower for a family or private group than for one or two travellers.
Domestic Safari Flights
Flying between Arusha, Serengeti and Zanzibar can remove several hours of road travel and make a short itinerary more practical. Flights increase the total cost, but they may provide better value when the traveller has limited time and wants to spend more of the holiday on safari.
Accommodation Location
Camps located inside or close to the main wildlife areas usually cost more than accommodation outside the parks. However, a better location can reduce daily transfer time and allow earlier game drives, giving travellers more useful time in areas where the Big Five may be found.
Travel Season
Prices are normally higher during popular safari months because camps, lodges and flights have stronger demand. Travelling during quieter periods can reduce accommodation costs, but the itinerary must still match seasonal road conditions and wildlife movements.
When comparing Tanzania Big Five safari packages, do not judge them only by the lowest price. Check how many full game drive days are included, where the accommodation is located, whether Ngorongoro Crater is included and whether the safari uses a private or shared vehicle. A cheaper itinerary is poor value when too much of the trip is spent travelling between parks instead of searching for wildlife.

When is the best time to visit Tanzania for safari?
The best time to visit Tanzania for safari depends on what you want to see. June to October is best for general wildlife viewing, July to September is best for Serengeti river crossings, and January to March is best for the Ndutu calving season.
What Is the African Big Five?
The African Big Five are the lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo. The name does not refer to the five largest animals in Africa. It originally described the animals considered most difficult and dangerous to hunt on foot.
Today, the meaning has changed. Travellers use the term Big Five when talking about wildlife they hope to see and photograph during an African safari. Each animal offers a different experience, from watching elephants move in family groups to searching carefully for a leopard resting in a tree.
In Tanzania, travellers have a strong chance of seeing the Big Five by combining the Serengeti with the Ngorongoro Crater. Lions, elephants and buffalo are commonly seen in the right areas, while leopards require patience and black rhinos are much rarer. Sightings are never guaranteed because these animals live freely in the wild.
Meet Tanzania’s Big Five
The Big Five are among the most requested wildlife sightings on a Tanzania safari. Each animal lives differently, so finding them requires time, patience and an experienced guide who understands tracks, habitats and animal behaviour.
Lion
Lions are often seen resting in groups during the warmer hours of the day. Early morning and late afternoon game drives provide better opportunities to watch them hunting, feeding or moving across the plains.
African Buffalo
African buffalo usually gather in large herds near grasslands and permanent water sources. They may appear calm from a distance, but they are strong, alert animals that should always be observed respectfully.
Leopard
Leopards are solitary and naturally difficult to locate. Guides search riverbanks, rocky areas and large trees where these cats may rest during the day or store their prey away from other predators.
Black Rhino
The black rhino is usually the most challenging member of the Big Five to see in Tanzania. The Ngorongoro Crater offers one of the strongest opportunities, although sightings can never be promised.
African Elephant
Elephants are highly social animals that often travel in family groups. Tarangire National Park is especially rewarding for observing large herds, young calves and elephants gathering near rivers during the dry season.

mattropolisJuly 31, 2026★★★★★Great Tanzanian vacation
We toured with Tanzania Safari Experience for an eight day trip to Tanzania. Five days of safari and then three days of beach vacation in Zanzibar. They were great to work with and customized everything exactly the way we wanted it. The lodges we were booked in were all incredible, particularly the Lahia Tented Lodge in the Serengeti. Our driver, Jay, seemed to know every road in every national park and as a result the wildlife viewing was unparalleled. There were times where we were the only vehicle seeing lions or hippos. The owner, Laurent, was extremely responsive and any issues we had in-country with our logistics were immediately sorted by him. He genuinely wanted us to have a first-rate experience. The only thing we were unprepared for is that some of the days in the safari vehicle were very long (10+ hours) and the roads can be really rough. But there were plenty of cold drinks in the car and it was worth it to see the wildlife. The safari/beach split was a great way to do the vacation and the beaches of Zanzibar were beautiful with clear blue water.

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

370godsongJanuary 3, 2026★★★★★Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience
We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.
