Trip Overview

An 8-day Tanzania safari is one of the best ways to experience the country’s most famous wildlife destinations while keeping travel time comfortable. This itinerary combines a fly-in safari to Northern Serengeti with game drives through Central Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara before returning to Arusha.

This safari is ideal for couples, families, photographers, and first-time visitors who want to maximize wildlife viewing without spending long hours driving to Serengeti. Flying directly from Arusha gives you more time on safari and less time on the road.

One thing many travelers underestimate is how large Serengeti National Park really is. Staying in both Northern and Central Serengeti allows you to experience different landscapes and increases your chances of seeing a wider variety of wildlife.

At Tanzania Safari Experience, we usually recommend this itinerary between July and October when the Great Migration is commonly found in Northern Serengeti. Outside these months, we can adjust the route to follow the migration in other areas of the park.

Day-by-Day Itinerary Northern Circuit Safari – From Arusha to Serengeti (8 Days) — Tanzania Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

DAY 1

Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport – Transfer to Arusha

After arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you’ll be welcomed by your Tanzania Safari Experience guide and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. The journey takes approximately one hour, passing local villages, coffee farms, and, on clear days, views of Mount Meru.

Today is intentionally relaxed to help you recover from your international flight before your safari begins. Most travelers find that getting a good night’s rest makes the early morning flight to Serengeti much more enjoyable.

Your guide will also review your safari itinerary, answer any last-minute questions, and confirm your departure details for the following morning. If you arrive early enough, you can spend the afternoon enjoying your lodge, taking a short walk around the property, or simply relaxing before the adventure ahead.

Drive Time: Approximately 1 hour
Overnight: Arusha

DAY 2

Fly from Arusha to Northern Serengeti (Kogatende)

After an early breakfast, you’ll transfer to Arusha Airport for your scenic bush flight to Kogatende Airstrip in Northern Serengeti. The flight usually takes around two hours and provides spectacular aerial views of Tanzania’s changing landscapes, from cultivated farmland to endless savannah.

Upon landing, your professional safari guide will be waiting to begin your first game drive immediately. Unlike travelers who drive to Serengeti over two days, flying allows you to spend far more time searching for wildlife on your very first day.

Northern Serengeti is famous for hosting the Great Wildebeest Migration between July and October, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras gather near the Mara River. During this period, your guide will position the vehicle in areas where river crossings are most likely to occur while also following recent wildlife activity.

Even outside migration season, the region offers outstanding wildlife viewing. Lions patrol the open plains, elephants move through river valleys, giraffes browse among acacia trees, and hyenas, jackals, and numerous antelope species are commonly seen throughout the day.

Flight Time: Approximately 2 hours
Game Drive: Afternoon
Overnight: Northern Serengeti

Expert Recommendation from Tanzania Safari Experience
Arriving by air gives you nearly an extra day of wildlife viewing compared to driving from Arusha. If your schedule allows, we almost always recommend flying for itineraries under ten days.

DAY 3

Full-Day Northern Serengeti Wildebeest Migration Experience

Today is dedicated to exploring one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife ecosystems. You’ll leave camp early while temperatures are still cool, as this is often when predators are most active and wildlife is easier to spot.

Your guide will tailor the day’s route based on recent animal movements rather than following a fixed circuit. If the Great Migration is nearby, you’ll spend time around the Mara River where wildebeest gather before attempting dramatic crossings. These crossings are unpredictable and may happen within minutes or take hours, making patience an important part of the experience.

Beyond the migration, Northern Serengeti is home to resident wildlife throughout the year. Large lion prides, elephants, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, crocodiles, hippos, and countless bird species can all be encountered during your game drive.

A picnic lunch is served at a scenic location inside the park before continuing your afternoon safari. As the day cools, many animals become active again, creating excellent opportunities for wildlife photography before returning to camp.

What Many Travelers Don’t Realize
River crossings are never guaranteed, even during migration season. The best safari experiences often come from the variety of wildlife encountered throughout the day rather than waiting for a single crossing event.

DAY 4

Northern Serengeti to Central Serengeti

After breakfast, you’ll begin your journey toward Central Serengeti, enjoying a full game drive along the way. This transfer is far more than simply traveling between camps—it’s another opportunity to explore different habitats and discover wildlife in areas many visitors never reach.

As you move south, the landscape gradually changes from rolling hills and river systems to the vast open plains that Serengeti is famous for. Your guide will make regular stops whenever interesting wildlife is spotted, allowing plenty of time to observe animal behavior and take photographs.

By afternoon, you’ll arrive in the Seronera region, often considered the wildlife heart of Serengeti National Park. Permanent rivers attract animals throughout the year, making this one of the most reliable places in Tanzania to see lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and large herds of plains game regardless of the season.

Before reaching your accommodation, you’ll enjoy an afternoon game drive through Seronera, where your guide will search for resident predators that frequently hunt during the cooler hours of the day.

Drive Time: Approximately 4–6 hours with game viewing en route
Overnight: Central Serengeti

Expert Recommendation from Tanzania Safari Experience
We deliberately include both Northern and Central Serengeti because each area offers a different safari experience. Northern Serengeti is seasonal and migration-focused, while Central Serengeti consistently delivers exceptional wildlife viewing throughout the year.

DAY 5

Full-Day Safari in Central Serengeti

Spend the entire day exploring Central Serengeti, one of the best year-round wildlife destinations in Africa. Without the need to travel between parks, your guide has the flexibility to follow fresh wildlife sightings and spend more time observing interesting animal behavior.

The Seronera Valley is renowned for its healthy populations of big cats. Lions are often seen resting on rocky kopjes or beneath acacia trees, while leopards frequently lounge in the branches of sausage and acacia trees near the rivers. Cheetahs prefer the open grasslands, where they use the flat terrain to hunt gazelles and other small antelope.

Throughout the day, you’ll also encounter elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, hippos, and an impressive variety of birdlife. Because this area has permanent water sources, wildlife remains abundant even during the dry season.

After a picnic lunch in the park, continue exploring different parts of Seronera before returning to your lodge or camp in the late afternoon.

In Our Experience
Spending two nights in Serengeti instead of rushing through in a single day dramatically improves wildlife sightings. It also allows your guide to adjust plans based on current animal movements rather than sticking to a tight schedule.

DAY 6

Central Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

Enjoy one final morning game drive in Serengeti before traveling toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Wildlife viewing continues throughout the journey, and it’s not unusual to spot lions, elephants, or large herds of herbivores before leaving the park.

Upon reaching Ngorongoro Crater, you’ll descend approximately 600 meters to the crater floor, one of Africa’s most unique wildlife habitats. The enclosed ecosystem supports an extraordinary concentration of animals, making it one of Tanzania’s best destinations for a single-day game drive.

The crater is particularly well known for its population of endangered black rhinos, although sightings can never be guaranteed. You’ll also have excellent opportunities to see lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, and numerous bird species around Lake Magadi.

Because wildlife remains inside the crater throughout the year, every game drive offers something different depending on weather, season, and recent animal activity.

Drive Time: Approximately 4–5 hours including game viewing
Overnight: Karatu or Ngorongoro Area

Common Mistake
Many visitors assume Ngorongoro Crater is simply another national park. In reality, its enclosed environment creates one of the highest wildlife densities in East Africa, making every hour on the crater floor incredibly rewarding.

DAY 7

Lake Manyara National Park – Return to Arusha

After breakfast, you’ll head to Lake Manyara National Park for the final game drive of your safari. Although smaller than Serengeti and Ngorongoro, the park offers an entirely different landscape, with lush groundwater forests, open floodplains, hot springs, and the alkaline lake itself.

Lake Manyara is famous for its large troops of baboons, impressive elephant populations, hippos, giraffes, and hundreds of bird species. Depending on water levels and the season, you may also see flocks of flamingos feeding along the shoreline.

The park’s compact size makes it ideal for a relaxed final safari before returning to Arusha. Your guide will continue searching for wildlife while sharing insights about the region and answering any remaining questions about Tanzania’s national parks.

In the afternoon, you’ll drive back to Arusha, bringing your memorable safari adventure to a close.

Drive Time: Approximately 2.5–3 hours to Arusha after the game drive.

Expert Recommendation from Tanzania Safari Experience
Lake Manyara is often overlooked because of its size, but it provides an excellent contrast to the open plains of Serengeti. Ending your safari here lets you experience another side of Tanzania’s diverse ecosystems before heading home.

DAY 8

Arusha to Kilimanjaro Airport for flight back home

Upon completion of your exciting adventure and depending on your flight schedule, you will be picked up from your Arusha accommodation and transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you will depart for home with unforgettable memories and captivating photos.

    Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

An absolutely brilliant tour / travel company

What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises. Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri Harvey

Everything You Need to Know About Your Safari

Every safari adventure begins with a question. Whether it’s your first or second time, it’s natural to wonder about the best time to visit, what to pack, or how the journey works. Here, we’ve answered the most common questions travelers ask before booking their Tanzania safari, so you can plan with confidence and look forward to unforgettable memories.

Yes, 8 days is enough to experience Tanzania’s most famous wildlife destinations without making the safari feel rushed. This itinerary includes Northern Serengeti, Central Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara, giving travelers a good balance of wildlife, landscapes, and different ecosystems.

The biggest advantage of this route is the flight from Arusha to Northern Serengeti. It saves valuable travel time compared to driving and allows you to spend more hours on game drives.

At Tanzania Safari Experience, we usually recommend this duration for travelers who want to experience the highlights of Tanzania but have limited time available.
