A fly in safari costs more than travelling entirely by road, but it saves time and reduces fatigue. The right choice depends on your budget, trip length and whether the journey itself is part of your experience.

For a seven day migration safari, flying to Kogatende is usually better than trying to drive from Arusha, visit several parks and still reach Northern Serengeti. That plan looks attractive on paper but often creates rushed days and too much time in transit.

Accommodation and Meal Plans

The first night is spent at Arusha Coffee Lodge on a full board basis. This gives you breakfast, lunch and dinner according to the lodge’s arrangements and your arrival time.

The following five nights are spent at Serengeti Mara River Camp on an all inclusive basis. The exact drinks and services included are governed by the camp’s current policy.

Dietary requirements should be shared before arrival. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and allergy related meals can often be arranged, but advance notice is important.

Bush meals or packed meals may be used on full day game drives. Your guide and camp team will agree on the most practical arrangement based on the safari plan.

Practical Flight and Luggage Advice

Safari aircraft are smaller than international planes and normally have limited luggage space. Soft sided bags are easier to load and are often required by the airline.

A typical luggage allowance may include checked luggage and hand luggage within a combined weight limit, but this varies by airline and ticket type. Your confirmed allowance will be provided before travel.

Large hard shell suitcases may be refused or require separate storage in Arusha. Packing lightly avoids delays and additional costs.

Keep medication, travel documents, camera batteries and valuable items in your hand luggage. Never place essential medication in a checked bag.

Common Mistake

Do not pack according to your international airline allowance without checking the safari flight restriction. A suitcase accepted on your flight to Tanzania may be too large or too heavy for the Kogatende aircraft.

Northern Serengeti provides excellent opportunities for photographing large herds, predators, river activity and open landscapes. A private vehicle gives you more control over positioning and the amount of time spent at each sighting.

Morning and late afternoon offer softer light, while midday light can be difficult because of strong contrast. However, migration action does not follow photography schedules, so you must sometimes photograph under harsh conditions.

Bring more memory cards and batteries than you expect to use. Charging is generally available at the camp, but power may operate during set hours or through solar systems.

A zoom lens is useful because animals may be close one moment and far away the next. Keep a second camera body when possible to reduce lens changes in dusty conditions.

Dust enters vehicles and camera equipment easily. Use a cloth, protective bag and suitable cleaning tools, but avoid changing lenses unnecessarily during game drives.

Pack neutral coloured, lightweight clothing that can be layered. Early mornings may feel cold, while midday temperatures can be warm.

Bring a warm jacket, comfortable closed shoes, sun protection, sunglasses, insect repellent and any personal medication. A hat should fit securely because loose hats can blow away when the safari roof is open.

A small day bag is useful for items needed inside the vehicle. Keep it compact so it does not reduce seating space.

Binoculars are recommended even when your guide has a pair. Having your own allows you to observe wildlife without waiting for someone else to finish.

Avoid camouflage clothing because it may be associated with military use and can create unnecessary complications.

This safari is worth considering when your priority is Northern Serengeti, the wildebeest migration and efficient travel. The higher cost mainly reflects internal flights, a private vehicle, quality accommodation and the camp’s location near the Mara River.

It may not be the best choice for travelers who want the lowest possible price or those who prefer visiting Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and Central Serengeti in the same trip.

Trying to include every major park within seven days would weaken the migration experience. You would spend more time packing, transferring and checking into accommodation.

Travelers wanting Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire or Zanzibar should add more days instead of removing time from Kogatende.

July to October is normally the main period for visiting Northern Serengeti in search of migration herds and possible Mara River crossings.

The exact timing changes each year because wildebeest movement depends on rainfall and grazing conditions. No month guarantees a crossing.

July and August are highly requested, while September and October can still provide strong migration experiences depending on herd location.

Mara River crossings are never guaranteed. Wildebeest move according to natural conditions and may remain near the river without crossing.

Four full days near Kogatende improve your chances because your guide has more time to follow herds and respond to movement.
