Trip Overview

A 3 days luxury safari from Zanzibar is ideal for travelers who want to combine a beach holiday with high quality wildlife viewing in Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater without spending several days driving across Tanzania.

This itinerary suits couples, families, honeymooners, and private groups who have limited time but still want to experience two of Tanzania’s strongest wildlife destinations. You fly directly from Zanzibar into Serengeti, meet your private guide at Seronera Airstrip, and begin your first game drive immediately.

The biggest advantage is time. Instead of using most of the first day driving from Arusha to Serengeti, you arrive inside the national park and start looking for wildlife shortly after landing. In our experience at Tanzania Safari Experience, choosing a flying safari improves roughly 30 percent of the overall safari experience because it reduces road fatigue and gives you more useful time inside the parks.

However, this is still a fast safari. You will cover Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and the road transfer to Arusha within three days. It works best when flights, game drives, accommodation, and departure times are planned carefully.

High demand: This safari books 4–8 weeks ahead during peak season (June–October).

Day-by-Day Itinerary 3 Days Luxury Safari From Zanzibar to Serengeti and Ngorongoro — Tanzania Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

DAY 1

Zanzibar to Serengeti and First Game Drive

Your safari begins with a transfer from your hotel in Zanzibar to Zanzibar Airport. The exact collection time depends on your hotel location and scheduled flight, but we normally arrange pickup early enough to allow time for airport check in and luggage handling.

You will fly from Zanzibar directly toward Serengeti. Some scheduled bush flights may make one or more short stops before reaching Seronera Airstrip, depending on the airline and passenger routing. The journey normally takes around two to three hours, although the final schedule can vary.

Landing at Seronera is part of the safari experience. The airstrip is located inside Serengeti National Park, so wildlife may sometimes be visible shortly before landing or while driving away from the runway. Your private safari guide will meet you at the airstrip and help with your luggage.

Your game drive begins immediately. There is no need to transfer to a distant town or wait until the following morning. After a short briefing, you start exploring the central Serengeti while traveling toward the best wildlife areas or your accommodation.

In our experience, flying into Serengeti improves roughly 30 percent of the safari experience. You avoid many hours of road travel, arrive with more energy, and use the first day for actual wildlife viewing instead of spending most of it in transit.

The afternoon game drive normally focuses on the Seronera Valley, river areas, open plains, kopjes, and woodland zones. These different habitats attract a wide range of animals and create good chances of finding predators.

You may see lions resting near rocky outcrops, elephants moving between woodland and water, giraffes feeding on acacia trees, and large groups of zebras or wildebeest crossing the plains. Leopards are often associated with riverine trees, although sightings can never be guaranteed.

Your guide will decide whether to stop for lunch before the game drive, carry a packed lunch, or arrange lunch at the camp depending on your arrival time. This flexibility matters because flight schedules sometimes change.

You will continue the game drive until the late afternoon before heading to your luxury lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.

Practical Advice for Day 1

Scheduled bush flights usually have strict luggage limits. Most airlines allow around 15 kilograms per person, including hand luggage, and prefer soft sided bags. Hard suitcases may not fit easily inside smaller aircraft.

Wear comfortable safari clothes during the flight because your game drive begins soon after landing. Keep sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, camera batteries, and any medication in your hand luggage.

DAY 2

Full Day Safari Experience in Serengeti

A full day in Serengeti gives you the best opportunity to search for wildlife without rushing between airports, lodges, or distant parks. Your guide can plan the day around recent animal movements, weather, road conditions, and the sightings reported by other professional guides.

The day normally begins early, when temperatures are cooler and predators are more active. Lions may still be moving after the night, hyenas may be returning from hunting, and cheetahs may take advantage of the cooler conditions before the midday heat.

You can leave the lodge with a packed breakfast or eat before departure. The better option depends on the location of your accommodation and how early you want to reach the wildlife areas.

A full day allows your guide to explore beyond the roads used during your arrival game drive. You may visit open plains, rocky kopjes, river valleys, woodland, and seasonal water sources.

Serengeti sightings are never controlled. Animals move freely, and even an experienced guide cannot promise a specific predator or hunting scene. What a skilled guide can do is read tracks, animal behavior, bird alarm calls, fresh information, and habitat conditions to improve your chances.

Lunch may be served as a picnic inside the park or at your camp. A picnic gives you more time in the field, while returning to the camp provides a longer rest and a more relaxed meal. For a three day safari, we usually recommend staying in the park with a packed lunch unless guests prefer a slower pace.

The afternoon game drive often becomes more productive as temperatures begin to fall. Elephants may become more active, predators may change resting places, and animals may gather near water.

You will return to the camp before or around sunset, depending on park rules, road conditions, and the distance to your accommodation.

Morning, Midday, and Evening in Serengeti

Time of day Wildlife activity Photography conditions What to expect
Early morning Predators may still be active Soft light and cooler air Strong time for lions, hyenas, and general movement
Late morning Grazing animals remain active Brighter light Good general wildlife viewing
Midday Many predators rest Harsh light and heat haze Slower activity but useful for close sightings
Late afternoon Wildlife activity increases Warm light and better contrast Strong photography and animal movement

Common Mistake

Many travelers expect constant action throughout the day. Serengeti is a natural ecosystem, not a controlled wildlife park. Some hours may be quiet, followed by a sudden predator sighting or large concentration of animals.

Patience is part of a successful safari. Leaving a sighting too quickly or constantly chasing radio reports can sometimes reduce the quality of the experience.

DAY 3

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater and Flight Back to Zanzibar

Day 3 combines a transfer from Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater, a crater game drive, a road journey to Arusha, and an evening flight back to Zanzibar. It is a rewarding day, but it is also the longest and most demanding part of the itinerary.

You will leave Serengeti early, normally after breakfast or with a packed breakfast. The drive toward Ngorongoro passes through changing landscapes, from open Serengeti plains to the highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The travel time depends on your camp location, road conditions, animal sightings, and entry procedures. Starting early is essential because every delay reduces the amount of time available inside the crater.

After reaching the crater rim, you descend into Ngorongoro Crater for a focused game drive. The crater floor contains grassland, wetlands, woodland, freshwater areas, and seasonal marshes within a relatively compact area.

Wildlife density is usually high. You may see lions, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, warthogs, hyenas, jackals, and many bird species. Black rhinos are present, but they are often seen from a distance and sightings are never guaranteed.

Lunch is normally served at a designated picnic area inside the crater. Travelers should expect other safari vehicles around the main wildlife areas because Ngorongoro is one of Tanzania’s most visited destinations.

After the crater game drive, you ascend to the rim and continue by road to Arusha. The drive usually takes around three to four hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

You will then take an evening flight from Arusha back to Zanzibar. Your Zanzibar transfer after arrival should be arranged according to the final flight schedule.

Honest Planning Advice for Day 3

This schedule is possible, but it has little room for poor timing. A late departure from Serengeti, traffic near Karatu or Arusha, or a longer crater game drive can place pressure on the evening flight.

We usually recommend confirming the final flight time before setting the crater departure schedule. Your guide must manage the day professionally and avoid treating every part of the route as flexible.

Travelers who prefer a slower holiday should add one more night near Ngorongoro or Arusha and fly back to Zanzibar the following day.

Everything You Need to Know About Your Safari

Planning a Tanzania safari often comes with important questions, from choosing the right travel season to understanding what to pack, where to stay, and what to expect each day. We have answered the questions travelers ask most often before booking, helping you prepare properly and plan your safari with confidence.

Flying from Zanzibar directly to Serengeti saves a full day of road travel and places you inside the national park soon after arrival. It is the most efficient option for travelers who have only three days and want to prioritize wildlife viewing instead of long transfers.

Driving from Arusha to central Serengeti can take most of the day, depending on traffic, park entry procedures, road conditions, and stops. The route is scenic, but it is not the best use of limited time.

A bush flight also reduces fatigue. Long safari roads can be dusty, uneven, and tiring, especially after an early hotel pickup or previous travel.

The main disadvantages are cost, luggage restrictions, and dependence on flight schedules. Bush flights may also make brief stops at other airstrips before reaching Seronera.

Option Main advantage Main disadvantage Best for
Fly from Zanzibar to Serengeti More time for game drives Higher cost and luggage limits Three day safari travelers
Fly to Arusha and drive Lower flight cost in some cases Long road transfer Longer itineraries
Drive from Arusha both ways Flexible route planning Too much road time for three days Safaris of five days or more

Best Choice

For this itinerary, flying into Serengeti is not simply a comfort upgrade. It is what makes the three day route practical.
