5 Days Tanzania Safari Experience: Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti

A five day Tanzania safari experience is ideal for travelers who want to visit Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti before continuing to Zanzibar without wasting time on unnecessary road transfers.

This itinerary suits couples, families, honeymooners and first time safari travelers who want a well planned Northern Tanzania safari with comfortable accommodation, strong wildlife viewing and enough time in the Serengeti.

The route is compact, but it is not rushed. You spend one full day in Tarangire, explore the Ngorongoro Crater and enjoy two separate safari experiences in Central Serengeti before flying directly to Zanzibar.

What many travelers misunderstand is that a good safari does not require visiting every national park. Five days work best when the route focuses on a few strong destinations instead of spending most of the trip driving between parks.

Our Recommended Safari Accommodation

Night Accommodation Location Why We Recommend It
Night 1 Aya Sophia Wildlife Villas Arusha area A comfortable arrival night with the possibility of seeing animals moving around the property
Night 2 Farm of Dreams Lodge Karatu A practical location for an early Ngorongoro Crater departure
Nights 3 and 4 Nyikani Camp Central Serengeti Two nights inside the Serengeti with good access to the Seronera wildlife area

Farm of Dreams Lodge is our recommended overnight stop after Tarangire. Karatu is positioned close enough to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for an early departure the following morning.

Nyikani Camp in Central Serengeti is our recommended Serengeti accommodation for this itinerary. Staying inside the park means you can begin wildlife viewing earlier and avoid travelling back and forth from accommodation outside the Serengeti.

Central Serengeti is a dependable year round safari area. The Seronera region contains permanent water sources, open plains, river valleys and woodland that support many resident animals.

All listed accommodations are planned on a full board basis. Final availability should be confirmed before booking because safari camps and lodges can fill quickly during busy travel months.

High demand: This safari books 4–8 weeks ahead during peak season (June–October).

Day-by-Day Itinerary 5 Days Tanzania Safari Experience — Tanzania Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

DAY 1

Kilimanjaro Airport Transfer to Arusha

Your safari begins when our representative meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport. After collecting your luggage, you will travel by road to Aya Sophia Wildlife Villas in the Arusha area.

The transfer normally takes approximately one to two hours, depending on traffic, arrival time and the exact route used. Traffic can be heavier near Arusha during the morning and late afternoon.

This day is intentionally kept simple. There is no park visit and no demanding activity. You can check in, eat, rest and recover from the international journey.

We selected Aya Sophia Wildlife Villas because its natural setting offers guests the possibility of seeing animals moving freely around the accommodation area. It provides a softer introduction to Tanzania before the main safari begins.

We always advise our guests to stay in Arusha before starting safari. A proper arrival night gives you time to rest, adjust to the local time and begin the following morning without airport pressure.

DAY 2

Arusha to Tarangire National Park and Karatu

The second day takes you from Arusha to Tarangire National Park for your first complete game drive. After exploring the park, you continue to Karatu for dinner and your overnight stay at Farm of Dreams Lodge.

You should leave Arusha early because the drive to Tarangire usually takes around two to three hours. The exact travel time depends on traffic, road conditions and the location of your Arusha accommodation.

Tarangire is known for elephants, baobab trees and the Tarangire River. During drier months, the river becomes an important water source and attracts wildlife from surrounding areas.

Possible sightings include elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, warthogs and different antelope species. Lions may be seen near water sources, river areas or open grassland, but every wildlife sighting remains natural and cannot be guaranteed.

Your driver guide will select game drive routes according to recent wildlife movement, weather and information from other professional guides. Safari is not about following one fixed road. Conditions inside the park change throughout the day.

After the game drive, you continue toward Karatu. This allows you to sleep closer to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and begin the following day earlier.

Expert Recommendation from Tanzania Safari Experience

Keep your camera ready when travelling near the river and woodland areas. Elephants can appear close to the road, but sudden movements and loud voices can disturb them. Remain seated and follow your guide’s instructions.

DAY 3

Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive and Transfer to Serengeti

This is the longest and most demanding day of the itinerary. You descend into Ngorongoro Crater for a wildlife drive before continuing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and entering Central Serengeti for your first night at Nyikani Camp.

The day should begin early. Morning entry gives you more time inside the crater and can provide cooler temperatures, softer photography light and better wildlife activity.

The crater floor supports a high concentration of animals within a relatively compact area. You may see wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, gazelle, elephants, hippos, hyenas and lions during the same game drive.

Ngorongoro is also one of the better places in Northern Tanzania to search for black rhinos. However, rhinos are often seen at a distance and sightings are never guaranteed.

After the crater game drive and lunch, you begin the journey toward Serengeti. The road passes through changing highland, grassland and open plain environments before reaching the Serengeti entrance.

Roads in the conservation area and Serengeti can be dusty and uneven, particularly during dry conditions. During rainy periods, some sections may become muddy or slower. This is a normal part of an overland Tanzania safari.

You arrive at Nyikani Camp in Central Serengeti for dinner and your first night inside the park. Arrival time depends on wildlife stops, road conditions and the time spent inside Ngorongoro Crater.

Common Mistake

Travelers sometimes underestimate the distance between Ngorongoro Crater and Central Serengeti. It is not a simple hotel transfer. The day combines a crater game drive, park formalities, rough roads and wildlife viewing along the route.

Best Choice

Start early, carry drinking water, keep essential items inside your day bag and allow the guide to manage the pace. Trying to rush this day can reduce both comfort and wildlife viewing.

DAY 4

Full Day Central Serengeti Safari

A full day in Central Serengeti gives you the strongest wildlife viewing opportunity in this itinerary. You can explore different habitats without changing accommodation, allowing the driver guide to follow current wildlife activity instead of concentrating on reaching another lodge before dark.

The Seronera region contains river valleys, grasslands, kopjes and woodland. These environments support resident wildlife throughout the year, including lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras and many antelope species.

Your guide may recommend an early morning departure when predators are more active and temperatures are cooler. Morning light is also helpful for photography because it produces softer shadows than the middle of the day.

The safari can be arranged as a full day game drive with a picnic lunch or divided into morning and afternoon game drives. The best choice depends on recent wildlife movement, your energy level and the camp location.

A full day drive gives you more range and flexibility. A divided schedule provides time to rest at camp during the hottest part of the day. We normally discuss these options with guests and follow the approach that best supports their interests.

Leopard sightings often require patience. Leopards may rest in trees or remain concealed near river vegetation. Lions are easier to locate in open areas, but they may sleep for long periods during the day.

Return to Nyikani Camp for dinner and your second night in Central Serengeti.

DAY 5

Central Serengeti Safari and Flight to Zanzibar

Your final safari morning includes a transfer through Central Serengeti to Seronera Airstrip, where you board a scheduled flight to Zanzibar. This saves a full day of road travel and makes the safari easier to combine with a beach holiday.

Your departure time will depend on the confirmed flight schedule. When possible, the transfer to the airstrip can include a final game drive through the Seronera area.

Scheduled safari flights may make stops at other airstrips before continuing to Zanzibar. Total travel time therefore depends on the route, aircraft operation and the number of scheduled stops.

Baggage allowances on smaller safari aircraft are normally more limited than international airline allowances. Soft sided bags are easier to load than hard suitcases. Your confirmed flight documents should always be checked for the exact baggage limit.

After arriving at Zanzibar Airport, you continue with your Zanzibar transfer and beach arrangements. This five day itinerary ends at Zanzibar Airport unless your beach accommodation and transfer are included in the complete safari proposal.

Departure point: Seronera Airstrip

Arrival point: Zanzibar Airport

Expert Recommendation from Tanzania Safari Experience

Place essential medication, travel documents, camera equipment and one change of clothes inside your hand luggage. Checked luggage problems are uncommon, but essential items should never be packed where you cannot access them easily.

    Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

An absolutely brilliant tour / travel company

What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises. Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri Harvey

Everything You Need to Know About Your Safari

Planning a Tanzania safari often comes with important questions, from choosing the right travel season to understanding what to pack, where to stay, and what to expect each day. We have answered the questions travelers ask most often before booking, helping you prepare properly and plan your safari with confidence.

Wildlife behaviour changes during the day, so the best safari experience is not limited to one particular hour. Morning is usually cooler and more active, midday can be useful for finding resting animals and evening often brings improved light and renewed predator movement.

Time Wildlife Activity Photography Practical Experience
Morning Predators may still be active and herbivores begin feeding Soft light and cooler colours Cool temperatures and earlier departure
Midday Many animals rest, but water sources remain productive Stronger light and heavier shadows Warmer temperatures and fewer moving vehicles in some areas
Evening Animals become more active as temperatures fall Warm light before sunset Limited time because vehicles must return before park closing rules apply

Morning game drives are often productive for lions, hyenas and other predators. However, an early departure does not guarantee a hunt. Predators may already be resting when you reach them.

Midday should not automatically be treated as wasted time. Elephants, buffaloes, hippos and animals near water can remain active. Leopards and lions may also be easier to photograph when resting in visible locations.

Evening offers attractive light, but the available time is limited. Your guide must respect park regulations and allow enough time to return to camp safely.
