Trip Overview

Habari! Welcome to my homeland. If you are sitting across from me at our workshop in Arusha, looking at a map of our northern safari circuit, this is exactly the road plan I would draw for you.

Many people think you need two weeks and thousands of dollars to see the real magic of our country. But we live here, and we know our wild spaces inside out. I am going to share our closely guarded, perfect route: a private journey through Tarangire, into the vast plains of the Serengeti, and down into the majestic Ngorongoro Crater.

This specific route gives you maximum wildlife time without spending your entire holiday driving. By utilizing comfortable, mid-range lodges like Eileen’s Trees Inn and Tukaone Serengeti Camp, you get proper beds, hot showers, and delicious hot meals without paying the crazy prices of ultra-luxury properties.

Let’s dive into your actual day-by-day journey for your upcoming travel in 2026.

What Exactly is a 4 Days Private Mid-Range Tanzania Safari?

A private mid-range safari means you have an entire 4×4 vehicle to yourself with a dedicated local guide, staying in comfortable lodges or canvas camps with private bathrooms rather than basic tents. It balances excellent wildlife viewing, personal flexibility, and good comfort while keeping costs sensible.

Day-by-Day Itinerary 4 Days Private Mid-Range Tanzania Safari — Tanzania Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park to Karatu

Our safari vehicle will collect you from your Arusha hotel at 8:00 AM. We drive straight to Tarangire National Park, a journey of about two hours on smooth tarmac roads.

Tarangire is famous for two things: massive herds of elephants and giant baobab trees that look like they were planted upside down. The Tarangire River is the only permanent water source in this entire region during the dry season, which means thousands of animals walk miles every day just to get a drink.

Our team always heads straight down toward the Silale Swamp. While most day-trippers stay near the main gate, we know that the swamp is where the real action happens. You will see hundreds of elephants wallowing in the mud, buffalos caked in wet earth, and lions hiding in the tall grass waiting for breakfast to walk past.

After an exciting afternoon game drive, we leave the park and drive up the beautiful Great Rift Valley escarpment to Karatu. This drive takes about an hour and 45 minutes. You will check into Eileen’s Trees Inn for a hot shower, a delicious dinner, and a peaceful night’s sleep surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens.

Pro-Tip from a Local Guide: When we pack your lunch boxes for Tarangire, ask your guide to find a safe picnic spot away from the main public site. There are gorgeous, quiet clearings overlooking the river where you can eat your chicken and fruit while watching giraffes drink across the water.

Day Highlights:
  • Transfer to Tarangire National Park
  • Full-day game drive in Tarangire National Park
  • Transfer to Karatu

Day 2: Karatu to the Endless Plains of the Serengeti

We start early today with a fresh cup of Tanzanian coffee. We drive through the cooler Ngorongoro Conservation highlands, stopping briefly at the official crater viewpoint to look down into the volcanic caldera. From there, we descend the dusty roads into the true heart of Africa: the Serengeti National Park.

The transition from the green Karatu hills to the flat, golden grasslands of the Serengeti is breathtaking. The word Serengeti comes from the Maa language of the Maasai people, meaning “endless plains.”

We will enjoy a game drive on our way to the camp, looking out for leopards hiding in the branches of sausage trees. By late afternoon, we arrive at Tukaone Serengeti Camp.

Tukaone is a private tented safari camp located in the central Serengeti near the Hembe Hills. These are large, heavy-duty canvas tents built on solid platforms, featuring comfortable beds, private flush toilets, and hot safari showers. At night, you will sit around the open campfire, listening to the distant roars of lions under a sky full of bright stars.

Day Highlights:
  • Transfer to Ngorongoro Conservation Area
  • Transfer game drive to Central Serengeti
  • Serengeti National Park Game Drive

Day 3: Full Day Wildlife Exploration in the Central Serengeti

A full day in the Serengeti allows us to explore deep into the Seronera River Valley. This area has water all year round, making it the premier spot in Africa for finding large resident prides of lions, cheetahs hunting in the open plains, and leopards resting in the trees.

Our team structures this day around the current movement of the wildlife. We highly recommend doing an early morning game drive starting at 6:00 AM. This is when the savannah is waking up, the air is cool, and predators like hyenas and leopards are actively returning from their nightly hunts.

We will return to Tukaone Camp for a hot mid-day lunch and a brief rest when the sun is at its hottest and the animals are sleeping. In the late afternoon, we head back out for another drive when the lighting is perfect for photography.

Safari Activity Best Time Wildlife to Look For
Early Morning Drive 6:00 AM – 9:00 AM Lions hunting, leopards, spotted hyenas active
Mid-Day Rest 12:00 PM – 2:30 PM Hippos cooling in pools, birds around camp
Late Afternoon Drive 3:30 PM – 6:30 PM Cheetahs scanning plains, elephants moving to water
Day Highlights:
  • Full-day game drive in Serengeti

Day 4: Serengeti Morning Drive and Transfer Back to Karatu

We wake up early for one final morning game drive in the Serengeti to catch the sunrise over the golden plains. The morning light is perfect for seeing plains game like zebras, Thomson’s gazelles, and topis running across the dew-covered grass.

After our morning drive, we pack up our bags from Tukaone Camp and begin our game drive transfer back toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This is not just a boring road transfer; we are viewing wildlife the entire way out of the park.

We will stop for a picnic lunch at the Naabi Hill Gate while your guide sorts out the park permits. From there, we drive back up into the forested highlands and return to Karatu for your second stay at Eileen’s Trees Inn. You can relax by the swimming pool, share photos using the lounge internet, and enjoy another hearty dinner.

Day Highlights:
  • Morning game drive in Serengeti
  • Transfer to Ngorongoro Conservation Area
  • Transfer to Karatu

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Morning Descent and Return to Arusha

This is the grand finale of your journey. We leave Eileen’s Trees Inn very early to arrive at the Ngorongoro Loduare Gate right when it opens. We descend 600 meters down the steep, forested walls into the crater floor.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a massive, unbroken volcanic caldera that formed millions of years ago when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed. Today, it forms a natural bowl covering over 260 square kilometers, packed with roughly 30,000 large animals.

Because the animals live inside this bowl year-round, it offers the highest density of large predators in Africa. This is your absolute best chance to see the endangered black rhinoceros grazing near Lake Magadi, alongside huge bull elephants, thousands of blue wildebeests, and large prides of crater lions.

After a brilliant five-hour game drive and a picnic lunch at the famous Ngoitokitok Hippo Pool, we ascend back up the crater rim. From there, we make our final drive back to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon for your onward flight or hotel stay.

Day Highlights:
  • Early morning descent into Ngorongoro Crater
  • Full-day Ngorongoro Crater safari
  • Drive Back to Arusha

Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

An absolutely brilliant tour / travel company

What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises. Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri Harvey
