Trip Overview

Imagine leaving Zanzibar’s white-sand beaches in the morning and finding yourself surrounded by the wildlife of the Serengeti a few hours later. This is one of the fastest and most exciting ways to experience Tanzania’s world-famous Great Migration without spending days on the road.

Whether you are traveling as a couple, with family, or with elderly relatives, a fly-in safari offers comfort, convenience, and outstanding wildlife viewing.

Why Choose a 3-Day Fly-In & Fly-Out Great Migration Safari?

A fly-in safari allows you to spend more time watching wildlife and less time traveling. Instead of driving for many hours to reach the Serengeti, you fly directly into the park and begin your adventure almost immediately.

One thing many travelers do not realize is just how enormous the Serengeti is. Covering nearly 15,000 square kilometers, it is one of Africa’s largest and most impressive wildlife ecosystems.

Flying over the Serengeti gives you a completely different perspective. From the aircraft window, you can see endless plains, winding rivers, isolated kopjes, and vast migration routes stretching to the horizon. We often tell our guests that flying directly into the Serengeti provides nearly 30% of the experience before the game drive even begins.

Fly-In Safari vs Road Safari

Understanding the Great Migration

The Great Migration is one of the most remarkable wildlife events on Earth. More than 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, move across the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing.

Unlike what many people think, the migration does not happen in one place all year. The animals continuously move throughout the Serengeti and Maasai Mara ecosystem.

Season Migration Area
January – March Southern Serengeti
April – May Central and Western Serengeti
June – July Western Corridor
July – October Northern Serengeti
November – December Central and Southern Serengeti

Our team at Tanzania Safari Experience follows migration patterns throughout the year to help guests visit the most active wildlife areas during their safari.

Day-by-Day Itinerary 3-Day Fly-In & Fly-Out Great Migration Safari from Zanzibar — Tanzania Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

Day 1: Fly from Zanzibar to Central Serengeti and Start Your Safari Immediately

Your adventure begins with a scenic flight from Zanzibar directly to Central Serengeti. This is one of the biggest advantages of choosing a fly-in safari. Instead of spending nearly eight hours traveling on roads, you arrive directly in the heart of Tanzania’s most famous national park. This makes the safari more comfortable, especially for families, honeymooners, and travelers visiting with elderly parents or grandparents.

The flight itself is part of the experience. As you fly over Tanzania, you begin to understand just how vast the Serengeti really is. From above, you can see endless plains, rivers, kopjes, and wildlife habitats stretching far beyond the horizon. We often tell our guests that flying into the Serengeti gives you almost 30% of the safari experience before you even land because the aerial views are truly unforgettable.

When you arrive at the airstrip, your Tanzania Safari Experience guide will be waiting to welcome you. There is no need for additional transfers or long drives. The safari starts immediately after landing. Within minutes, you may find yourself watching giraffes feeding on acacia trees, elephants crossing the plains, or lions resting in the shade.

The afternoon is dedicated to a game drive through Central Serengeti, one of the most wildlife-rich areas in the park. This region is famous for its large populations of lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, and countless other animals. As the sun begins to set over the plains, you will head to your camp or lodge for dinner and overnight stay surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.

Day Highlights:
  • Transfer to Central Serengeti
  • Game drive in Central Serengeti

Day 2: Full-Day Great Migration Game Drive

Today is your full day in the Serengeti, giving you plenty of time to explore different wildlife areas and follow the movements of the Great Migration.

For guests looking for an extra-special experience, the day can begin with an optional hot air balloon safari before sunrise. Floating silently above the Serengeti as the sun rises is one of the most spectacular experiences Tanzania has to offer. From the air, you can appreciate the scale of the ecosystem in a completely different way. Depending on the season, you may even fly over areas connected to the migration routes leading toward the famous Mara River.

After breakfast, you continue with a full-day game drive across the Serengeti. Your guide will use the latest wildlife information and their local knowledge to position you in the best areas for animal sightings. During migration season, you may encounter enormous herds of wildebeest and zebras spread across the plains. Seeing thousands of animals moving together is an incredible sight and one of the reasons travelers from around the world visit Tanzania.

The Serengeti is also home to some of Africa’s most famous predators. Lions can often be seen resting near migration routes, while cheetahs scan the grasslands for opportunities to hunt. Leopards may be found resting in trees along riverbanks, hidden from view until a trained guide spots them.

A picnic lunch is usually enjoyed inside the park, allowing you to spend the entire day surrounded by wildlife. As the afternoon continues, there are more opportunities to search for elephants, giraffes, hyenas, hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species before returning to your accommodation for dinner and another night in the Serengeti.

Day Highlights:
  • Early morning balloon safari
  • Full-day game drive in Serengeti

Day 3: Morning Game Drive and Flight Back to Zanzibar or Arusha

Your final day begins with an early morning game drive, one of the best times to be out in the Serengeti. The temperatures are cooler, wildlife is active, and the soft morning light creates beautiful scenery across the plains.

This is often the perfect opportunity to enjoy a few last sightings before leaving the park. Lions may still be moving after a night of hunting, elephants may be making their way toward water sources, and giraffes can often be seen feeding as the sun rises. Every morning game drive is different, which is why many guests are surprised by how much they see during their final hours in the Serengeti.

After the game drive, you will head back to the airstrip for your scheduled flight. As you take off, you can enjoy one final look at the vast plains below before continuing your journey. Depending on your travel plans, you can fly back to Zanzibar to continue your beach holiday or return to Arusha for the next stage of your Tanzanian adventure.

Although the safari lasts only three days, the combination of direct flights, excellent wildlife viewing, and the chance to experience the Great Migration makes it feel like a much longer and more rewarding journey. This itinerary is proof that even travelers with limited time can enjoy an authentic Serengeti safari without sacrificing comfort or wildlife experiences.

Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

An absolutely brilliant tour / travel company

What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises. Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri Harvey

Everything You Need to Know About Your Safari

Every safari adventure begins with a question. Whether it’s your first or second time, it’s natural to wonder about the best time to visit, what to pack, or how the journey works. Here, we’ve answered the most common questions travelers ask before booking their Tanzania safari, so you can plan with confidence and look forward to unforgettable memories.

Yes, a 3-day fly-in safari can be enough to experience the Great Migration, especially because you fly directly into the Serengeti and spend more time viewing wildlife instead of traveling. The exact migration experience depends on the time of year, but our team plans the safari around the current migration location to maximize your chances of seeing large herds of wildebeest and zebras.
