View AccommodationMikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible safari destinations, making it an excellent choice for travelers who want to experience authentic African wildlife without spending many days on safari. Located between Dar es Salaam and Tanzania’s southern safari circuit, the park offers impressive game viewing, beautiful landscapes, and opportunities to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, lions, and many other species. It is widely regarded as one of the best safari options for visitors looking for a short yet rewarding wildlife adventure.
For travelers already enjoying a beach holiday in Zanzibar, Mikumi National Park is the perfect safari extension. Its convenient location and easy transport connections make it possible to combine tropical beaches with an unforgettable wildlife experience. Many of our guests choose Mikumi when they want to add a safari to their Zanzibar vacation without committing to a longer itinerary in northern Tanzania.
Mikumi is also one of the best destinations for travelers who only have 1 to 2 days available for safari. Even within a short timeframe, visitors can enjoy exciting game drives and encounter a wide variety of wildlife in a natural setting. This makes it ideal for business travelers, weekend visitors, or anyone looking to experience Tanzania’s wildlife without spending several days on the road.
There are three main ways to reach Mikumi National Park: SGR train, road transfer, and domestic flight. At Tanzania Safari Experience, we always advise our clients traveling from Dar es Salaam to choose the SGR train whenever possible. This option helps skip approximately four hours of road transfer while providing a comfortable and modern travel experience before connecting to the park by safari vehicle.
For those seeking maximum convenience, domestic flights offer the fastest access from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam, while road transfers provide flexibility and scenic views along the journey. Whether you choose SGR, road transfer, or a flight, Tanzania Safari Experience will help you select the most suitable option for a smooth and memorable Mikumi National Park safari.

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.
We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.
What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises. Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri Harvey
Every safari adventure begins with a question. Whether it’s your first or second time, it’s natural to wonder about the best time to visit, what to pack, or how the journey works. Here, we’ve answered the most common questions travelers ask before booking their Tanzania safari, so you can plan with confidence and look forward to unforgettable memories.
Yes, Mikumi National Park is one of the best safari destinations for travelers who have limited time but still want an authentic wildlife experience. The park is easily accessible from both Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, making it possible to enjoy a safari in just 1 to 2 days.
Despite being a short safari destination, Mikumi offers excellent game viewing throughout the year. Visitors regularly encounter elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, hippos, and many species of birds during game drives.
At Tanzania Safari Experience, we often recommend Mikumi to travelers who cannot dedicate several days to a safari but still want to experience Tanzania’s famous wildlife and natural beauty.
Yes, Mikumi National Park is one of the most popular safari destinations for visitors staying in Zanzibar. Direct flights and convenient travel connections make it easy to combine a beach holiday with a wildlife adventure.
Many travelers choose Mikumi as a safari extension because it requires less travel time compared to some of Tanzania’s more distant national parks. This allows guests to spend more time enjoying game drives and wildlife viewing.
As your safari experts at Tanzania Safari Experience, we regularly organize Mikumi safaris from Zanzibar for travelers seeking a quick and memorable safari experience without extending their holiday significantly.
Mikumi National Park is home to a wide variety of wildlife that can be seen during game drives. Common sightings include elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, warthogs, antelopes, and hippos.
Predators such as lions can also be found in the park, and lucky visitors may encounter leopards. The open plains make wildlife easier to spot compared to some densely vegetated parks.
The park also attracts bird enthusiasts thanks to its rich birdlife and diverse habitats. Every game drive offers unique wildlife encounters depending on the season and animal movements.
Travelers can reach Mikumi National Park by SGR train, road transfer, or domestic flight. The best option depends on budget, travel preferences, and available time.
For guests traveling from Dar es Salaam, we usually recommend the SGR train because it helps avoid approximately four hours of road transfer while offering a comfortable and modern travel experience. After arriving at the station, a safari vehicle completes the journey to the park.
Flights are the fastest option for travelers coming from Zanzibar or those with very limited time, while road transfers provide flexibility and scenic views throughout the journey.
A Mikumi safari can be enjoyed in as little as 1 day, although most travelers choose a 2 day itinerary for a more relaxed experience and better wildlife viewing opportunities.
A 2 day safari allows visitors to enjoy multiple game drives, spend more time searching for wildlife, and experience the atmosphere of the park without rushing between activities.
At Tanzania Safari Experience, we recommend 1 to 2 days for most travelers, especially those visiting from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam who are looking for a convenient safari extension to their holiday.
