Everything You Need to Know About Northern Serengeti National Park
- Northern Serengeti National Park
Discover Northern Serengeti National Park
Northern Serengeti is one of the most spectacular wildlife destinations in Africa. This remote and less crowded region of Serengeti National Park is famous for its dramatic landscapes, abundant wildlife, and its location along the route of the Great Wildebeest Migration. Visitors can enjoy exceptional game viewing while experiencing a more exclusive safari atmosphere away from the busier areas of the park.
The Great Migration reaches Northern Serengeti every year, making this region one of the best places to witness one of nature’s greatest spectacles. While the migration is always present somewhere within the Serengeti ecosystem throughout the year, animal movements vary depending on rainfall patterns and grazing conditions. This is why proper safari planning is essential to maximize your chances of seeing the experiences that matter most to you.
At Tanzania Safari Experience, we work closely with every guest to tailor an itinerary based on the season, wildlife movements, travel preferences, and available time. Rather than offering a one size fits all safari, we carefully design each journey to give you the best possible experience during your travel dates.
For travelers whose main goal is witnessing the famous Mara River crossings, we usually recommend a fly in fly out safari. Flying directly to Northern Serengeti saves valuable travel time and allows you to spend more time in the areas where the migration is active. Guests with additional days can combine Northern Serengeti with other outstanding destinations such as Central Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, or other parts of Tanzania’s northern circuit.
Experiencing a Mara River crossing requires both time and patience. Wildlife follows its own schedule, and crossings can happen unexpectedly after hours of waiting or not occur at all on a particular day. However, the reward can be extraordinary when thousands of wildebeest gather at the riverbanks before making the dangerous crossing. Our team at Tanzania Safari Experience will guide you through the planning process and create an itinerary that gives you the best opportunity to enjoy this remarkable natural event.

mattropolisJuly 31, 2026★★★★★Great Tanzanian vacation
We toured with Tanzania Safari Experience for an eight day trip to Tanzania. Five days of safari and then three days of beach vacation in Zanzibar. They were great to work with and customized everything exactly the way we wanted it. The lodges we were booked in were all incredible, particularly the Lahia Tented Lodge in the Serengeti. Our driver, Jay, seemed to know every road in every national park and as a result the wildlife viewing was unparalleled. There were times where we were the only vehicle seeing lions or hippos. The owner, Laurent, was extremely responsive and any issues we had in-country with our logistics were immediately sorted by him. He genuinely wanted us to have a first-rate experience. The only thing we were unprepared for is that some of the days in the safari vehicle were very long (10+ hours) and the roads can be really rough. But there were plenty of cold drinks in the car and it was worth it to see the wildlife. The safari/beach split was a great way to do the vacation and the beaches of Zanzibar were beautiful with clear blue water.

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

Everything You Need to Know About Your Safari
Every safari adventure begins with a question. Whether it’s your first or second time, it’s natural to wonder about the best time to visit, what to pack, or how the journey works. Here, we’ve answered the most common questions travelers ask before booking their Tanzania safari, so you can plan with confidence and look forward to unforgettable memories.
The Great Migration is a continuous movement of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles across the Serengeti ecosystem throughout the year. While the animals are always somewhere within the ecosystem, their exact location changes depending on rainfall and grazing conditions.
Northern Serengeti is most famous for hosting large migration herds during the period when they move toward the Mara River. This typically creates some of the most dramatic wildlife viewing opportunities in Africa, especially when river crossings occur.
At Tanzania Safari Experience, we monitor seasonal wildlife movements and help plan your safari according to your travel dates. This gives you the best opportunity to experience the migration in the right location at the right time.
The most popular period for Mara River crossings is generally between July and October. During these months, large herds often gather along the river as they move between Tanzania and Kenya.
However, wildlife follows natural conditions rather than a fixed calendar. River crossings can happen multiple times in a day, after several days of waiting, or not occur at all during a particular game drive.
For this reason, Tanzania Safari Experience recommends allowing enough time in Northern Serengeti to increase your chances of witnessing this extraordinary event. Patience is often rewarded with unforgettable sightings.
A fly in fly out safari is often the best option for travelers whose primary goal is to see the Mara River crossings. Flying reduces travel time and allows you to spend more time exploring the migration areas.
This option is especially valuable for guests with limited vacation time. Instead of spending long hours on the road, you can maximize your game viewing opportunities in Northern Serengeti.
Our safari specialists at Tanzania Safari Experience can help you compare flight and driving options to find the most suitable itinerary for your schedule and budget.
We generally recommend at least two to three nights in Northern Serengeti for guests interested in the migration. Additional days can significantly improve your chances of witnessing memorable wildlife behavior.
The Mara River crossings are unpredictable, and no operator can guarantee exactly when they will occur. More time in the area allows greater flexibility to follow wildlife movements and changing conditions.
Many travelers also combine Northern Serengeti with Central Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, or Tarangire National Park for a more complete Tanzania safari experience.
Yes, Northern Serengeti combines very well with other destinations across Tanzania’s northern safari circuit. Many guests choose to include Central Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, or Lake Manyara in the same itinerary.
Combining destinations creates a more diverse safari experience, allowing you to enjoy different landscapes, wildlife habitats, and safari activities during one journey.
At Tanzania Safari Experience, we design customized itineraries based on your interests, travel season, budget, and available time to create the most rewarding safari possible.
