Kilimanjaro Region is one of the most exciting areas in northern Tanzania, not only because of Mount Kilimanjaro but because of everything that happens around it.
This is where your journey can combine adventure, culture, and real local experiences in one destination. Most people know it for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, but there is much more to do even if you are not climbing.
You can take day hikes on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro through rainforest zones where you might see monkeys, waterfalls, and unique plant life. There are also beautiful waterfall tours such as Materuni Waterfalls, where you hike through Chagga villages and enjoy stunning natural pools at the base of the falls.
Another popular experience is the coffee tour. This is done with local Chagga farmers where you learn how coffee is grown, harvested, roasted, and prepared in a traditional way. It is very interactive and gives you a real cultural connection to the region.
You can also explore local villages around Moshi, visit banana and coffee farms, and learn about the Chagga people’s history and irrigation systems that have existed for generations. For more relaxed travelers, Moshi town itself offers a calm atmosphere with great views of the mountain on clear days.
Of course, the main highlight is Mount Kilimanjaro trekking. There are several routes like Machame, Marangu, Lemosho, and Rongai, depending on your fitness and time. Each route offers a different experience of the mountain ecosystems from rainforest to alpine desert and finally the summit.
So Kilimanjaro Region is not just about climbing. It is a complete destination where you can mix trekking, cultural tours, waterfalls, coffee experiences, and relaxation all in one place.

We toured with Tanzania Safari Experience for an eight day trip to Tanzania. Five days of safari and then three days of beach vacation in Zanzibar. They were great to work with and customized everything exactly the way we wanted it. The lodges we were booked in were all incredible, particularly the Lahia Tented Lodge in the Serengeti. Our driver, Jay, seemed to know every road in every national park and as a result the wildlife viewing was unparalleled. There were times where we were the only vehicle seeing lions or hippos. The owner, Laurent, was extremely responsive and any issues we had in-country with our logistics were immediately sorted by him. He genuinely wanted us to have a first-rate experience. The only thing we were unprepared for is that some of the days in the safari vehicle were very long (10+ hours) and the roads can be really rough. But there were plenty of cold drinks in the car and it was worth it to see the wildlife. The safari/beach split was a great way to do the vacation and the beaches of Zanzibar were beautiful with clear blue water.
This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.
We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

The Kilimanjaro Region offers much more than mountain climbing. Visitors can trek Mount Kilimanjaro, hike to beautiful waterfalls like Materuni, enjoy coffee farm tours, explore Chagga villages, and visit local markets in Moshi.
If you prefer a relaxed experience, you can spend time learning about the local culture, enjoy traditional Tanzanian cuisine, or take scenic walks with spectacular views of Africa’s highest mountain.
At Tanzania Safari Experience, we can tailor your itinerary whether you are looking for a challenging trek, a cultural day trip, or a combination of both.
No. Many travelers visit the Kilimanjaro Region without climbing the mountain and still have an unforgettable experience.
There are plenty of activities suitable for all fitness levels, including waterfall hikes, coffee tours, cultural experiences, nature walks, and sightseeing around Moshi. These experiences allow you to enjoy the beauty of the region without reaching high altitudes.
If you have limited time or simply want to experience the area’s culture and scenery, we can arrange day trips that showcase the best of the Kilimanjaro Region.
The ideal length of stay depends on your travel plans. If you are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, most routes take between five and nine days, depending on the route you choose.
If you are not climbing, two to three days are enough to enjoy popular attractions such as Materuni Waterfalls, coffee tours, Chagga cultural experiences, and Moshi town.
Many of our guests also combine the Kilimanjaro Region with a northern Tanzania safari or a Zanzibar beach holiday for a complete Tanzania adventure.
The Kilimanjaro Region can be visited throughout the year, but the dry seasons generally provide the best weather for outdoor activities.
January to March and June to October are popular months for mountain trekking, hiking, and sightseeing because the trails are usually drier and the mountain views are often clearer.
Even during the greener months, the waterfalls become more impressive, the landscapes are lush, and there are fewer visitors, making it a great option for travelers seeking a quieter experience.
Yes. The Kilimanjaro Region is one of the best starting points for a northern Tanzania safari.
After exploring Kilimanjaro, you can easily continue to Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, or Lake Manyara National Park. The travel connections are convenient, making it easy to combine mountain adventures with world class wildlife viewing.
At Tanzania Safari Experience, we regularly create customized itineraries that combine Kilimanjaro, safari, and Zanzibar into one seamless holiday.
