Your first day is deliberately simple. After arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport, your driver meets you for the transfer to Arusha, approximately one hour away. Day 3 is where the traditional safari begins. After breakfast, you leave Arusha for the approximately three hour drive toward Tarangire National Park, enter the park and spend the day game driving with a picnic lunch. Do not treat this purely as a transfer day. Once you are inside the Serengeti, the drive toward camp becomes part of the safari. Lions, giraffes, elephants, hyenas, cheetahs and other wildlife can appear along the route.

The Great Migration may also be present within reachable areas depending on the season, but no responsible safari planner should promise that the herds will be in Central Serengeti on a particular day.

Your first complete Serengeti day gives your guide time to explore without the pressure of reaching another destination before evening. Flying rather than returning overland and continuing through another transport connection keeps this day manageable. By evening, you have moved from Tanzania’s northern safari circuit to Zanzibar.

If you have already completed your preferred excursions, we recommend keeping this day simple. Spend time at the beach, enjoy the hotel facilities, take a slow walk or simply relax without watching the clock.

For travelers who still want to explore, this can also be a good day for an optional activity that you did not manage to include earlier in the trip. The exact choice can depend on weather, availability and what you have already experienced during your stay.
