Trip Overview

The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the most remarkable wildlife spectacles on Earth. Seeing thousands of wildebeest gather along the Mara River, waiting for the right moment to cross, is an experience that stays with you forever.

At Tanzania Safari Experience, we guide travelers into the heart of this natural phenomenon every year. Our team spends countless days in the Serengeti following migration movements, tracking river crossing activity, and helping guests experience the best wildlife moments possible. This 7 day Tanzania safari itinerary combines Tarangire National Park, Central Serengeti, Northern Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater into one carefully planned adventure.

Why This Safari Matters

This route combines Tanzania’s most famous wildlife destinations with the best opportunity to witness the Great Migration in a single week.

Many travelers focus only on Northern Serengeti when planning a migration safari. In our experience, that often means missing some of the most rewarding wildlife encounters elsewhere in the ecosystem.

This itinerary gives you a complete Northern Circuit safari experience. You begin among Tarangire’s giant elephant herds, continue through the endless plains of Serengeti, spend valuable time tracking migration activity in Kogatende, and finish inside the wildlife rich Ngorongoro Crater.

What many visitors do not realize is that migration safaris are about much more than river crossings. Sometimes the most memorable moment is not the crossing itself but watching thousands of wildebeest gathering on the riverbanks while lions, crocodiles, and hyenas wait nearby.

High demand: This safari books 4–8 weeks ahead during peak season (June–October).

Day-by-Day Itinerary Tanzania Safari Itinerary 7 Days — Tanzania Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

DAY 1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park then Karatu

Your safari begins with a morning departure from Arusha to Tarangire National Park, one of Tanzania’s best wildlife destinations for elephant sightings. The park is famous for its giant baobab trees, large elephant herds, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and a variety of antelope species. As you explore the park, you will enjoy your first game drive while taking in the beautiful landscapes that make Tarangire unique.

The Tarangire River attracts wildlife throughout the year, making it an excellent place for animal viewing. Predators such as lions and leopards are also present, although sightings depend on the day’s conditions. Bird enthusiasts will appreciate the park’s impressive variety of birdlife.

A picnic lunch will be served during your game drive, allowing you to enjoy the surroundings while watching wildlife nearby. Throughout the afternoon, your guide will continue searching for the park’s most interesting animal sightings.

Later in the day, you will leave Tarangire and drive to Karatu for dinner and overnight. The cooler climate and peaceful atmosphere of Karatu provide a comfortable stop before your journey into the Serengeti ecosystem.

DAY 2

Karatu to Central Serengeti

After breakfast, depart Karatu and begin your journey toward Serengeti National Park. The route passes through the beautiful Ngorongoro Highlands, offering spectacular scenery and opportunities to spot wildlife along the way. One of the highlights of the day is a stop at the famous Ngorongoro Crater viewpoint where you can admire the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera.

After entering Serengeti National Park, your transfer becomes a game drive. Wildlife encounters begin immediately as you travel across the endless plains. Zebras, gazelles, giraffes, elephants, and predators may all be seen during the drive.

Central Serengeti is known for its year round wildlife concentration and is one of the best places in Africa to observe big cats. Lions resting on kopjes, cheetahs scanning the plains, and leopards hidden in acacia trees are all possible sightings.

As the afternoon light turns golden, continue exploring the park before arriving at your safari camp. Enjoy dinner and a peaceful evening under the stars in the heart of the Serengeti.

DAY 3

Central Serengeti to Northern Serengeti (Kogatende)

An early morning game drive transfer takes you from Central Serengeti toward Northern Serengeti, the region famous for the Great Wildebeest Migration and Mara River crossings. Along the journey, you will continue spotting wildlife while traveling through different sections of the Serengeti ecosystem.

As you approach Kogatende, the number of wildebeests and zebras often increases dramatically during migration season. Massive herds spread across the plains, creating incredible wildlife scenes and excellent photography opportunities.

Upon arrival in Northern Serengeti, the focus shifts to tracking migration activity. Your guide will monitor herd movements and visit active river crossing areas where wildebeests gather before attempting to cross the Mara River.

Since river crossings are natural events, patience is part of the adventure. Even when a crossing does not happen immediately, watching thousands of wildebeests gathering along the riverbanks is a remarkable experience. Dinner and overnight at your camp in Northern Serengeti.

DAY 4

Full Day Mara River Crossing Safari

Today is dedicated entirely to the Great Wildebeest Migration and Mara River crossing activity. For guests seeking an extra special experience, we highly recommend an optional hot air balloon safari at sunrise. Flying above the Serengeti provides incredible views of wildlife and migration herds from the air.

After breakfast, continue tracking wildebeest movements throughout the day. Your guide will visit different crossing points and position the vehicle where the best wildlife activity is taking place. Every day is different, making the experience exciting and unpredictable.

The Mara River is home to huge crocodiles, while nearby plains support lions, hyenas, cheetahs, and leopards. These predators often follow the migration, creating dramatic wildlife interactions throughout the region.

You may also cross to different sections of Kogatende depending on road conditions and water levels, allowing you to explore a wider area while searching for active crossings. Return to camp for dinner and overnight.

DAY 5

Northern Serengeti to Central Serengeti

After breakfast, begin your journey back toward Central Serengeti. Rather than simply transferring between camps, this is a full day game drive through some of the most wildlife rich areas of the park.

The route offers opportunities to spot predators, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, and many other species. Your guide will follow wildlife activity while making strategic stops for photography and observation.

A picnic lunch will be enjoyed in the middle of the Serengeti surrounded by open plains and wildlife. Many travelers find this to be one of the most memorable moments of the safari as they enjoy lunch in the heart of Africa’s most famous national park.

Continue exploring throughout the afternoon before arriving at your camp in Central Serengeti. Relax around the camp and enjoy another evening under the Serengeti sky.

DAY 6

Central Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

Wake up early for breakfast before departing Serengeti and heading toward Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Upon arrival, descend approximately 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full day wildlife safari.

Often referred to as a natural zoo, the crater supports one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. This unique ecosystem provides excellent opportunities to spot lions, buffaloes, elephants, hippos, hyenas, and many other animals within a relatively small area.

Ngorongoro Crater is also one of the best places in Tanzania to search for the endangered black rhinoceros. The crater floor’s rich grasslands and permanent water sources support wildlife throughout the year.

Enjoy a picnic lunch near the hippo pool before continuing your game drive. Later in the afternoon, ascend from the crater and transfer to your accommodation in Karatu or within the Ngorongoro area depending on your chosen accommodation category.

DAY 7

Karatu to Arusha Departure

After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed morning before beginning your transfer back to Arusha. The drive offers a final opportunity to appreciate Tanzania’s landscapes and rural scenery.

Depending on your departure schedule, you may stop for souvenirs, local crafts, or a coffee break along the way. This is also a good time to reflect on the incredible wildlife experiences from the previous week.

Your guide will ensure a comfortable journey back to Arusha while assisting with any final travel arrangements.

Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel, airport, or other departure point, marking the end of your 7 Days Tanzania Wildebeest Migration Safari with Tanzania Safari Experience.

    Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

An absolutely brilliant tour / travel company

What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises. Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri Harvey

Everything You Need to Know About Your Safari

Every safari adventure begins with a question. Whether it’s your first or second time, it’s natural to wonder about the best time to visit, what to pack, or how the journey works. Here, we’ve answered the most common questions travelers ask before booking their Tanzania safari, so you can plan with confidence and look forward to unforgettable memories.

Yes, seven days is enough time to experience the Wildebeest Migration, especially if you focus on Northern Serengeti and stay at least two nights in Kogatende. The key is timing, location, and patience rather than rushing through the parks.

The migration is not a single event but a continuous movement of animals across the Serengeti ecosystem. With the right itinerary, you can see large herds, predator activity, and possibly river crossings within this timeframe.

At Tanzania Safari Experience, we design the route to maximize your chances by positioning you in the right area at the right time rather than moving too quickly between parks.
