Day-by-Day — Stone Town Zanzibar – 2 Days and 1 Night Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & The Magic of Stone Town
What is the best way to start a Zanzibar trip?
Upon landing at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, a private transfer to a historical hotel in Stone Town allows you to drop your bags and immediately dive into the island’s culture.
The transition from the modern airport to the ancient, winding streets of the UNESCO World Heritage site is a sensory whirlwind. As we drive you toward the coast, the architecture shifts from concrete to coral stone and intricately carved teak doors.
Checking In: The Tembo House Hotel
We recommend staying at the Tembo House Hotel (or a similar heritage property). This isn’t just a place to sleep; it’s a landmark. Sitting right on the seafront, it features antique furniture and an atmosphere that feels like a Sultan’s palace.
Pro-Tip: Ask for a room with a “Zanzibar balcony” facing the ocean. Watching the dhows return with their catch at dusk while the Call to Prayer echoes across the rooftops is a quintessential local experience you won’t find in a brochure.
Afternoon Adventure: Sailing to Prison Island (Changuu)
Is Prison Island worth visiting on a short trip? Yes, Prison Island offers a unique blend of dark history and natural beauty, featuring a sanctuary for Giant Aldabra tortoises and pristine waters perfect for a quick afternoon snorkel.
We’ll board a traditional wooden dhow—a vessel used by traders for centuries—and sail across the crystal-clear waters. While the island was originally intended to house rebellious slaves and later functioned as a yellow fever quarantine station, today it is a peaceful retreat.
Meeting the Giants
The stars of the island are the Giant Aldabra tortoises, some of which are over 150 years old.
The Experience: You can feed these gentle giants (they love hibiscus flowers!) and see the etchings on their shells that denote their age.
The Scenery: After visiting the old prison ruins, take a walk to the backside of the island where the coral limestone has been undercut by the tide, creating dramatic “mushroom” rock formations.

Day 2: The Labyrinth of Stone Town
What are the must-see spots in Stone Town?
A guided walking tour should include the Anglican Cathedral (former Slave Market), the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, and the bustling Darajani Market to experience the island’s true pulse.
After a breakfast of fresh tropical fruits and spiced Tanzanian tea, we set out on foot. Stone Town is a maze where getting lost is part of the magic, but having our expert guides ensures you understand the “why” behind the walls.
The Weight of History
We start at the Anglican Cathedral, built directly over the site of the world’s last legally operating slave market. Standing in the cramped underground chambers where captives were once held is a sobering, necessary experience that honors the island’s complex past.
The Pulse of the Market
Next, we head to Darajani Market. This is the “Hali Halisi” (the real condition/vibe) of Zanzibar.
The Spice Section: Smelling raw cinnamon bark and fresh cloves.
The Fish Auction: Watching locals bid on kingfish and red snapper in a fast-paced, rhythmic Swahili exchange.

Comparison: Exploring Stone Town
| Feature | Guided Tour | Solo Wandering |
| Historical Context | Deep insights into Omani and British eras. | Limited to what you see on plaques. |
| Navigation | Seamless; you see all major landmarks. | High chance of getting lost in the maze. |
| Local Interaction | Guides facilitate meaningful conversations. | Interactions are mostly transactional. |
Maximizing Your Time: Customizing the Journey
Since this itinerary covers the essentials, we often suggest “Experience Add-ons” depending on your flight schedule.
The Spice Plantation (3 hours): If your flight is late in the evening, we can stop at a local farm on the way to the airport. You’ll see how vanilla, nutmeg, and black pepper grow in the wild.
The Rooftop Sunset: Before you leave, we recommend a quick coffee at the Emerson on Hurumzi. It offers a 360-degree view of the “Stone Town Skyline”—a forest of minarets and church spires.
Planning Your 2026 Visit
As of 2026, travel to Zanzibar has become more streamlined, but the soul of the island remains unchanged. For those looking to dive deeper into the region, we recommend checking out the latest Tanzania National Parks guidelines for mainland safaris, or exploring the UNESCO World Heritage archives for more on Stone Town’s preservation.

EXCELLENT Based on 2 reviews Posted on Godson GVerified Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything.Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.Posted on Chris HVerified An absolutely brilliant tour / travel company What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises.Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri HarveyVerified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. Everything You Need to Know About Your Safari
Every safari adventure begins with a question. Whether it’s your first or second time, it’s natural to wonder about the best time to visit, what to pack, or how the journey works. Here, we’ve answered the most common questions travelers ask before booking their Tanzania safari, so you can plan with confidence and look forward to unforgettable memories.
While you won't see the entire island, 2 days is the perfect amount of time to experience the cultural heart of Zanzibar. Focusing on Stone Town and Prison Island allows you to see the most iconic historical sites and get a real feel for the local Swahili lifestyle without rushing.
Zanzibar is a culturally conservative island. We recommend dressing modestly by covering your shoulders and knees. Lightweight linen or cotton clothing is best to stay cool while respecting the local traditions.
While many larger shops and hotels at Stone Town accept US Dollars (printed after 2006) or credit cards, it is helpful to have some Tanzanian Shillings for small purchases at the Darajani Market or for street food snacks.
Â
The boat ride from the Stone Town waterfront to Prison Island takes about 20 to 30 minutes each way. We use traditional wooden dhows, which provide a scenic and steady ride across the turquoise waters.
We recommend sticking to bottled or filtered water throughout your stay. Most hotels, including Tembo House, provide bottled water in the rooms for brushing your teeth and drinking.
Yes, the tortoise sanctuary on Prison Island is open throughout the day. Our itinerary schedules this in the afternoon when the light is beautiful for photos and the island is typically more peaceful.
Yes, Tanzania is considered one of the safest safari destinations in Africa. National parks are well-managed, and guides are highly trained to ensure your safety. While in cities, it’s always best to take normal precautions, such as avoiding walking alone at night. Traveling with a trusted operator ensures a smooth and safe experience.
Zanzibar is generally safe for visitors, especially in tourist areas. Basic precautions such as respecting local customs, dressing modestly in towns, and using organized transport are recommended. Most travelers feel very comfortable during their stay.
The "Big Three" are the Old Fort, the House of Wonders (Beit-al-Ajaib), and the Anglican Cathedral/Former Slave Market. Our guided tour covers these along with the narrow, carved-door alleys that make the town famous.
Stone Town is generally very safe, especially around the main waterfront and Forodhani Gardens. Like any travel destination, we suggest staying in well-lit areas and keeping an eye on your belongings.
The Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is only about 5 miles (8km) from Stone Town. Depending on the time of day, the drive usually takes between 15 and 20 minutes.
Absolutely. If you have an evening flight on your second day, our team can add a 2-hour Spice Farm tour on the way to the airport. This is a great way to see the rural side of the island before you depart.
