Day-by-Day Itinerary 12 Days Tanzania Honeymoon Safari and Zanzibar Luxury

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

Day 1: Transfer from Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha

Your journey begins with a seamless transition from the international skies to the lush, volcanic soils of Arusha, staying at the prestigious Grand Melia.

Upon landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you won’t have to navigate the taxi crowds. Our Tanzania Safari Experience guide will be waiting in the arrivals hall with a personalized sign. The 45-minute drive to Arusha is your first introduction to the Tanzanian landscape—keep an eye out for small coffee farms and the silhouette of Mount Meru.

At the Grand Melia Arusha, the check-in is handled while you enjoy a cold welcome drink. This hotel is built on an old coffee plantation and features a stunning infinity pool overlooking the mountains.

Pro-Tip: Head to the rooftop bar for a “sundowner” cocktail. The view of the sun setting behind Mount Meru is the perfect “we’re finally here” moment.

Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) to Arusha Transfer

Enjoy a smooth and reliable transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) to Arusha. Your professional driver from Tanzania Safari Experience will meet you on arrival and ensure a comfortable journey of about one hour to your hotel or lodge in Arusha.

Day 2: Culture & Acclimatization in Arusha

Day two is designed to shake off jet lag through a private guided tour of Arusha City, focusing on local markets and high-end Tanzanian gemstones.

After a buffet breakfast featuring local tropical fruits and Tanzanian coffee, your guide will take you into the heart of Arusha. This isn’t just a drive-by; you’ll visit the Maasai Market Curio Shops where you can see artisans at work.

We also recommend a stop at The Cultural Heritage Centre, a world-class gallery where you can learn about the 120+ tribes of Tanzania. After a local lunch, the afternoon is yours to relax by the pool at the Grand Melia or walk through the hotel’s private coffee gardens before dinner.

Day 3: Tarangire – The Kingdom of Elephants

The adventure officially moves into the wild with a 118km drive to Tarangire National Park, a prehistoric landscape of baobab trees and massive elephant herds.

We leave Arusha early to beat the traffic. As you enter Tarangire, the scenery shifts to iconic African savannah. Your first game drive takes you toward the Tarangire River, the only permanent water source in the area.

During the dry season, the river is a magnet for wildlife. You will see herds of up to 300 elephants at once. Your guide will set up a private picnic lunch under a giant baobab tree—some of which are over 1,000 years old. In the late afternoon, we drive to Escarpment Lodge, which sits on the rim of the Great Rift Valley with breathtaking views of Lake Manyara below.

About Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania’s most scenic wildlife destinations, famous for its large elephant herds and ancient baobab trees. The park offers excellent game viewing year-round, with diverse landscapes and rich wildlife, making it a perfect addition to any safari with Tanzania Safari Experience.

Day 4: The Ascent to the Serengeti

A transition day that takes you from the Rift Valley floor, through the Ngorongoro Highlands, and finally onto the “Endless Plains” of the Serengeti.

After breakfast at Escarpment Lodge, we climb the winding roads of the Karatu highlands. You’ll pass colorful Iraqi villages and high-altitude wheat farms. As we descend into the Serengeti National Park, the trees disappear, and the horizon opens up.

This is a “transit game drive,” meaning we look for wildlife as we head toward the Melia Serengeti. This lodge is truly unique; it is built into the landscape using natural stone and wood, offering 180-degree views of the plains from your private balcony.

Wildlife Focus: Look for the “Big Five,” particularly leopards which love the acacia trees along the Seronera River.

Serengeti Balloon Safari

Take your safari experience to new heights with a hot air balloon ride over Serengeti National Park. Glide above the plains at sunrise and witness wildlife from a breathtaking perspective. Available as an optional add-on for $550 per person with Tanzania Safari Experience.

Day 5: The Drama of the Great Migration

This is the high-stakes day of the safari, focusing on the Northern Serengeti and the adrenaline-fueled Mara River crossings.

We head north toward the Mara River. If you are traveling between July and October, this is where the Great Migration gathers. You will witness thousands of wildebeest and zebra standing on the riverbanks, gathering the courage to jump.

Our guides use radio networks to track where the herds are most active. Seeing a crossing is a test of patience, but when it happens—with crocodiles waiting and the dust rising—it is the most powerful sight in nature. We return to the lodge in the evening for a celebratory dinner under the stars.

Day 6: The Big Cat Capital to the Crater Rim

Spend the morning exploring the Seronera Valley’s high concentration of lions and cheetahs before moving to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The Seronera area is famous for its “Kopjes”—massive granite rock formations that act as lookout points for lions and cheetahs. We spend the morning tracking predators on the hunt.

After a picnic lunch at the Naabi Gate (the park’s exit), we move into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You’ll notice the temperature drop as we climb the crater rim to Lion’s Paw Lodge. This lodge is tucked into a forest of Acacia Lahai trees, often shrouded in a romantic morning mist.

Day 7: Descending into the "Lost World"

A full-day exploration of the Ngorongoro Crater, a collapsed volcano that serves as a natural sanctuary for the rare Black Rhino.

At dawn, we descend 600 meters down the steep crater walls. The floor is a 20km-wide “Eden” where animals don’t migrate—they stay year-round. You are almost guaranteed to see lions, hyenas, and massive “tusker” elephants.

The highlight is searching for the Black Rhino, which is heavily protected here. We enjoy lunch by the “Hippo Pool” before ascending in the late afternoon. You’ll head to Acacia Lodge Karatu for a cozy evening in the cooler highlands.

Day 8: Lake Manyara & The Flight to the Island

A final morning safari through the jungle-like forests of Lake Manyara followed by an afternoon flight to the Zanzibar archipelago.

Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions and thousands of flamingos that turn the lake’s edge pink. It’s a lush, green contrast to the dry Serengeti.

After lunch, your guide will drop you at the Arusha Airstrip for your 1-hour flight to Zanzibar. Upon arrival, you’ll be met by our island team and driven to the Sunshine Hotel on the North East coast. The transition from the dust of the bush to the scent of the ocean is the ultimate honeymoon “refresh.”

Day 9: Tropical Seclusion in Zanzibar

A day of pure relaxation and “Pole Pole” living on the white sands of the Indian Ocean.

No early wake-up calls today. Wake up to the sound of the Indian Ocean at Sunshine Hotel. This day is yours to customize:

  • Relax: Enjoy the infinity pool or a couple’s massage.

  • Activity: Organize a snorkeling trip to Mnemba Atoll, famous for its coral reefs and frequent dolphin sightings.

  • Dinner: Enjoy fresh-caught seafood right on the beach with your toes in the sand.

Day 10: The Spice Route to Stone Town

A sensory journey through Zanzibar’s interior spice plantations followed by an immersion into the ancient history of Stone Town.

After a late breakfast, we head inland. Zanzibar is the “Spice Island,” and on our private Spice Tour, you’ll see (and taste) where cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon come from.

We arrive in Stone Town in the afternoon. You’ll check into Tembo House Hotel, a historic building that feels like a Sultan’s palace. The evening is perfect for a walk along the seafront or visiting the Forodhani Gardens night market to try “Zanzibar Pizza.”

Day 11: The Soul of Stone Town & Departure

Reflect on your 12-day journey as you explore the narrow alleys of the UNESCO World Heritage site before heading to the airport.

Your final morning is spent wandering the labyrinthine alleys of Stone Town. Look at the intricately carved Zanzibari doors and the old slave market site.

Depending on your international flight schedule, our driver will pick you up from Tembo House and transfer you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ). As you fly home, you’ll leave with the dust of the Serengeti on your shoes and the soul of Zanzibar in your heart.

Everything You Need to Know About Your Safari

Every safari adventure begins with a question. Whether it’s your first or second time, it’s natural to wonder about the best time to visit, what to pack, or how the journey works. Here, we’ve answered the most common questions travelers ask before booking their Tanzania safari, so you can plan with confidence and look forward to unforgettable memories.

For the best balance of safari and beach, visit between July and October. This aligns with the Great Migration river crossings and the dry, sunny weather in Zanzibar.

Zanzibar offers a range of luxury. By staying at boutique spots like Sunshine Hotel and Tembo House, you get high-end service and authentic "Stone Town" soul without the massive price tag of private island resorts.

Yes, the safari can optionally start from Zanzibar, with a domestic flight included, or from Arusha if you are already on the mainland. This flexibility makes the safari ideal for travelers combining a beach holiday with a wildlife experience. Tanzania Safari Experience will arrange all transfers and flights if needed.

Yes, this package is 100% customizable. You can adjust the accommodation level, travel dates, number of days, or even add extra destinations. Tanzania Safari Experience designs each safari based on your preferences, budget, and travel style.

While in cities, it’s always best to take normal precautions, such as avoiding walking alone at night. Traveling with a trusted operator ensures a smooth and safe experience.

You will travel in a private, custom-built 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof for excellent visibility. The vehicle includes charging ports, a fridge for cold drinks, and comfortable seating throughout the trip.

Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but wildlife viewing is generally best during the dry season (June–October) when animals gather around water sources. The green season (November–May) offers lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and spectacular birdwatching opportunities. Specific events like the Great Migration occur mainly from December to July, depending on the movement of the herds.

Yes, the safari package typically includes full board meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and accommodation in carefully selected lodges or tented camps. Your stay ranges from comfortable mid-range lodges to luxury options, depending on your preferences.
