Trip Overview

Arusha National Park Day Trip: The Best One-Day Safari from Arusha

A lot of travelers arrive in Arusha dreaming about lions in the Serengeti or the Ngorongoro Crater, but many overlook one of Tanzania’s most rewarding safari experiences right on the city’s doorstep. An Arusha National Park Day Trip offers wildlife, forests, waterfalls, lakes, walking safaris, and stunning views of Mount Meru—all in a single day.

At Tanzania Safari Experience, we often recommend this trip to travelers with limited time, families, business visitors, and anyone who wants a genuine safari without spending hours driving between parks. Our team visits Arusha National Park throughout the year, and it remains one of the most underrated safari destinations in northern Tanzania.

Why Choose an Arusha National Park Day Trip?

Arusha National Park is only a short drive from Arusha city and offers wildlife viewing, walking safaris, beautiful landscapes, and Mount Meru views in a single day.

Unlike many famous parks in Tanzania, Arusha National Park is not known for huge predator populations. Instead, it stands out because of its incredible scenery and diversity.

Within one day, you can travel through lush rainforest, open grasslands, volcanic craters, sparkling lakes, and mountain slopes. Few parks in East Africa offer such varied landscapes in such a compact area.

One of the biggest advantages is accessibility. Most visitors can reach the park gate in less than an hour from Arusha city, making it perfect for travelers who do not have time for a multi-day safari.

Day-by-Day Itinerary Arusha National Park Day Trip — Tanzania Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

Arusha National Park Day Trip Itinerary

Morning Pick-Up and Drive to Arusha National Park

Your day begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Arusha. After meeting your guide from Tanzania Safari Experience, you will drive toward Arusha National Park, which sits on the slopes of Mount Meru. As you enter the park, the scenery changes quickly from busy city streets to lush forest and open grasslands. The morning hours are often the best time to spot wildlife, and you may see giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, warthogs, and several species of monkeys shortly after entering the park.

Mid-Morning Game Drive and Ngurdoto Crater Viewpoint

The safari continues through different habitats, showcasing why Arusha National Park is one of the most diverse parks in Tanzania. Your guide will take you to the famous Ngurdoto Crater viewpoint, where you can enjoy panoramic views across the crater floor. Often called Tanzania’s “Little Ngorongoro,” this volcanic crater is home to buffaloes, warthogs, and various antelope species. Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs and learn about the park’s unique ecosystems.

Ranger-Guided Walking Safari

One of the highlights of the day is a guided walking safari accompanied by an armed park ranger. Unlike most safari parks where visitors remain inside the vehicle, Arusha National Park allows you to experience the bush on foot. Walking through the natural environment offers a completely different perspective, allowing you to observe animal tracks, birds, plants, and wildlife from ground level. It is common to see giraffes, zebras, and other animals while enjoying this unique experience.

Picnic Lunch in the Park

Around midday, you will stop at a designated picnic site for lunch surrounded by nature. This break provides time to relax, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and take in the beautiful scenery before continuing with the afternoon activities.

Afternoon Visit to the Momella Lakes

After lunch, you will explore the scenic Momella Lakes area. These shallow alkaline lakes attract a wide variety of birdlife, including flamingos during certain times of the year. The lakes are also known for their beautiful colors and stunning views of Mount Meru. As you drive around the lakes, you may encounter giraffes, waterbucks, zebras, and numerous bird species, making this part of the safari especially rewarding for photographers and nature lovers.

Return to Arusha

In the late afternoon, after a full day of wildlife viewing and sightseeing, you will begin your journey back to Arusha. You will arrive at your hotel in the early evening with wonderful memories of Tanzania’s most accessible national park, having experienced wildlife, walking safari adventures, crater views, forests, and lakes all in a single day.

Day Highlights:
  • Transfer to Arusha National Park

    Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

An absolutely brilliant tour / travel company

What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises. Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri Harvey
