Mwanza to Central Serengeti
Your safari begins with a morning pickup from your hotel, residence, or Mwanza Airport. We normally recommend leaving early enough to avoid city traffic and reach Serengeti National Park while wildlife is still active.
The distance from Mwanza to Ndabaka Gate is approximately 140 to 145 kilometers. The journey usually takes around 2 to 2.5 hours along the MwanzaโMusoma highway, although the exact timing depends on traffic, stops, and road conditions.
After completing the park entry procedures at Ndabaka Gate, your game drive begins through the western Serengeti. This area is quieter than Central Serengeti and can offer sightings of giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, topi, zebras, wildebeest, and several antelope species.
You then continue toward the Seronera area in Central Serengeti. The drive inside the park can take several more hours because it is not a direct highway transfer. Your guide will slow down for wildlife sightings, photography, and rest stops.
Tukaone Serengeti Camp is our recommended accommodation for this part of the itinerary. Its location provides convenient access to the central wildlife areas while maintaining the atmosphere of a proper tented safari camp. Dinner and overnight are arranged on a full-board basis.
What to Expect on the First Day
The first day is longer than many travelers expect. Reaching Ndabaka Gate is relatively quick, but traveling from the gate to Central Serengeti takes additional time.
Wildlife sightings can also extend the journey. This is not wasted transfer time. Once inside the national park, the drive becomes part of your safari.
We recommend carrying water, sunglasses, sunscreen, a light jacket, and a camera within reach. Avoid packing important items at the bottom of your main suitcase because you may not access it until reaching camp.
