Arusha Airport

Arusha Airport (ARK): Flights, Location and Safari Travel Guide

Arusha Airport (ARK) is a regional airport on the western side of Arusha, about 7 km from the city centre. It is useful for domestic flights to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, while most long-haul visitors arrive through Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to Arusha by road.

The two airports are easy to confuse when booking a safari. ARK is close to Arusha city; JRO is the international gateway farther east. Check the airport code on your ticket before arranging a hotel pickup or safari transfer.

Arusha Airport began 24-hour operations in August 2026 after a runway lighting system was installed and inspected. This allows aircraft to land and take off at night, but it does not mean that scheduled flights or ground transport run every hour.

At Tanzania Safari Experience, we usually recommend spending a night in Arusha before a road safari if you arrive at JRO late in the day. It gives you time to rest, meet your guide and start the drive in daylight.

Quick Safari Overview: Using Arusha Airport

Arusha Airport is most useful for travelers connecting to a domestic safari flight or arriving in Arusha from another Tanzanian destination. For a road safari, the airport’s value depends on your flight schedule, hotel location and first park; it does not remove the need to plan drive times and park entry hours.

Planning detail What to expect
Best for Domestic flights and connections to safari airstrips
Recommended stay One night in Arusha before a road safari if arriving late
Best season Year-round; routes and flight times vary by airline and date

Difficulty level Straightforward with a prearranged pickup; more coordination if changing airports
Photography Keep camera gear accessible, and check cabin baggage rules with your airline
Accommodation style Arusha hotel or lodge before or after your safari

Value for money Flights can save road time, but small-aircraft fares and baggage limits affect the value

Where Is Arusha Airport?

Arusha Airport is in Olasiti Ward, west of Arusha city. The Tanzania Airports Authority places it about 7 km from the city centre and lists its elevation as 4,567 feet. Its IATA code is ARK; the address supplied for navigation is JJF+QXJ, Arusha.

The airport serves travelers heading to Arusha and onward to the northern safari circuit, including Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara and Serengeti. Some travelers also use it to connect between Arusha and other Tanzanian destinations.

TAA lists an expanded runway measuring 1,860 metres, two aircraft parking areas and a passenger terminal. The airport’s recent lighting upgrade now supports night operations as well.

The Arusha non-directional beacon is at the western end of the airfield. This is a navigation reference for pilots rather than a passenger facility.

Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport?

Choose the airport shown on your confirmed ticket. ARK is Arusha Airport, close to the city and primarily used for regional and domestic travel. JRO is Kilimanjaro International Airport, the main international gateway for northern Tanzania, with connections to the Arusha, Moshi and safari areas.

Airport Code Best suited to Safari planning
Arusha Airport ARK Domestic flights and some regional connections Convenient for Arusha and domestic flight connections
Kilimanjaro International Airport JRO Most long-haul international arrivals to northern Tanzania Usually followed by a road transfer to Arusha or a safari area

JRO is about 40 km east-southeast of Arusha, according to the airport’s official website. Allow extra time for the road transfer, especially if you are connecting to another flight or meeting a safari vehicle.

A common booking mistake is choosing “Arusha” as the destination without checking the code. A ticket to JRO does not land at ARK, and a transfer between the two airports requires a separate road journey.

Does Arusha Airport Handle International Flights?

Arusha Airport is sometimes described as handling international flights, but that description needs context. TAA’s airport profile still describes ARK as serving domestic flights, while Flightlink’s published 2026–27 timetable includes a direct Arusha–Nairobi Wilson service. Regional routes and permissions are specific; ARK should not be assumed to be a general long-haul gateway.

If you are flying from Europe, North America or another long-haul origin, check that your confirmed ticket lands at JRO or another international airport with the connections you need. If a booking appears to show an international arrival at ARK, confirm with the airline where you will clear immigration and customs before making plans.

For a regional journey from Kenya, check the precise airport in Nairobi as well. Nairobi Wilson and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport are different airports, and a connection between them can affect your timing.

Which Airlines Fly from Arusha Airport?

Arusha Airport has domestic services connecting the city with destinations such as Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro and safari airstrips. Depending on route and date, operators may include Air Tanzania, Precision Air, Auric Air, Coastal Aviation, Air Excel, Regional Air Services and Flightlink; schedules change, so verify the flight directly with the airline.

Flightlink’s published schedule for 1 June 2026 to 31 May 2027 lists Arusha connections to destinations including Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, Serengeti airstrips, Lake Manyara and Nairobi Wilson. Some flights involve a stop or connection rather than a direct service.

Do not plan around a route listed on an old timetable or a general flight-search page. Check the exact date, departure airport, arrival airstrip, stopovers, baggage allowance and check-in time on your booking.

Is Arusha Airport Open 24 Hours?

Yes. Arusha Airport began round-the-clock operations on 25 August 2026 after its new runway lighting system was inspected. This allows aircraft to land and take off at night, expanding the hours in which flights can be scheduled.

Twenty-four-hour airport operations do not mean there are scheduled departures all night. A late arrival also does not guarantee that a taxi, hotel shuttle or safari transfer will be waiting unless you have arranged it.

For a night flight, confirm your pickup in advance and share your flight number with your hotel or safari operator. If you have a connecting domestic flight, check the airline’s minimum connection time and whether you need to collect and recheck your baggage.

Can I Start a Safari Straight After Landing?

You can sometimes begin a safari on the day you land, but the plan needs to fit your arrival time, immigration and baggage delays, road journey and park entry hours. TANAPA currently lists Tarangire’s gates as closing at 6 pm; the drive from Arusha takes about 2.5 to 3 hours in good conditions.

A morning arrival at JRO may leave enough time for a carefully planned first day, but it is not a good day to add several stops or allow a tight transfer. With a late arrival, an overnight in Arusha is the more comfortable choice.

If you stay near the route out of town, you may reduce some morning traffic. Staying inside or near Tarangire can give you more time for the game drive, but accommodation availability and park entry arrangements need to be confirmed in advance.

Expert recommendation from Tanzania Safari Experience: Tell us your arrival airport and landing time before fixing the first safari day. We can then check whether a same-day park entry is realistic or whether an Arusha overnight will make the trip work better.

How Do I Get Between Arusha Airport, JRO and My Hotel?

Arusha Airport is near the city, while JRO is farther east. A transfer between JRO and Arusha takes additional road time, so arrange transport around the airport shown on your ticket rather than assuming “Arusha Airport” means either location.

At ARK, a prearranged hotel or safari pickup is the simplest option, particularly if your flight arrives late. Confirm the driver’s name, meeting point and contact number before travel.

If you are moving between JRO and ARK to catch a connecting flight, allow a generous buffer. Traffic, flight delays and baggage collection can all affect the transfer, and the airlines may not protect a connection booked on separate tickets.

How Do I Check Arusha Airport Arrivals and Departures?

Check your airline’s latest flight status first, then confirm any schedule change with the airline or ticketing agent. Arusha services can use small aircraft and multiple stops, so the itinerary shown at booking may need closer attention than a simple city-to-city flight listing.

Confirm whether the flight departs from ARK, JRO or another airstrip. This is especially important for Serengeti flights, where the exact airstrip—such as Seronera or Kogatende—determines where your safari vehicle should meet you.

For pickup planning, send your operator the flight number and arrival time as soon as you have them. If the airline changes the schedule, update your transfer plan rather than relying on the original arrival time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Arusha Airport

Arusha Airport is a useful regional airport, but it is not interchangeable with JRO. Check the code on your ticket, confirm the current route with your airline and arrange ground transport around the actual arrival time. These details matter most when you are connecting to a safari or changing airports.

Is Arusha Airport the same as Kilimanjaro Airport?

No. Arusha Airport is ARK, close to Arusha city. Kilimanjaro International Airport is JRO, east of Arusha and the main international gateway for northern Tanzania.

Check the three-letter code on your ticket before arranging a driver. The airport names are similar enough to cause mistakes in hotel and safari pickup plans.

If you need to travel between them, allow time for the road transfer and possible delays.

Is Arusha Airport an international airport?

TAA’s airport profile describes Arusha Airport as serving domestic flights. Some regional airline schedules include cross-border routes, such as Arusha to Nairobi Wilson, but this does not make ARK a general gateway for long-haul international flights.

If your itinerary shows an international arrival at ARK, ask the airline to confirm the route and where immigration and customs formalities take place.

For most long-haul journeys to northern Tanzania, plan around JRO unless your confirmed ticket says otherwise.

Is Arusha Airport open 24 hours?

Arusha Airport began 24-hour operations in August 2026 after its runway lighting system was installed and inspected. Aircraft can now use the airport at night.

That does not mean flights operate at every hour. Scheduled services still depend on the airline and route.

Arrange a late-night pickup in advance and confirm that your hotel can receive you at your arrival time.

How far is Arusha Airport from the city centre?

TAA lists Arusha Airport as about 7 km west of the city centre. The airport is in Olasiti Ward, and the transfer time depends on your hotel location and traffic.

Give your hotel or safari operator the airport code, ARK, when arranging pickup.

If your ticket says JRO, you are landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport, not at Arusha Airport.

Can I go to Tarangire National Park on the day I land?

It may be possible if you arrive early and have a direct, prearranged transfer, but the timing needs to be checked carefully. Tarangire is about 2.5 to 3 hours from Arusha in good road conditions, and TANAPA lists the park gate closing time as 6 pm.

A late international arrival at JRO leaves less time once you include immigration, baggage and the drive.

For a relaxed start, we usually recommend an overnight in Arusha after a late arrival and an early departure the next morning.

Which airport should I use for a Tanzania safari?

Use the airport shown on your confirmed flight. For most long-haul arrivals heading to northern Tanzania, that is JRO; ARK is useful for domestic flights and some regional services.

If you are flying into Tanzania from a nearby country, check whether your route lands at ARK, JRO or another airport.
