The crater is one of Tanzania's most spectacular wildlife destinations and supports an extraordinary concentration of animals within a relatively small area.

During your game drive, you may see lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, gazelles and many other species.

Tanzania - Safari - Experience

An unforgettable safari – thank you, Laurent and Praygod! We booked a nine-day private safari with Tanzania Safari Experience and could not have been happier. From the very first message to the end of our trip, we felt incredibly well looked after. Planning everything with Laurent was a pleasure. We had plenty of questions, and he always replied so quickly, with friendly, detailed and helpful answers. He listened to our wishes and made the whole process feel easy and reassuring. Our guide, Praygod, made the experience truly special. He was such a pleasant person to spend our days with: knowledgeable, well organised and always happy to share insights about the animals and the Serengeti. We could really tell how much effort he put into making every day memorable. Laurent’s recommendation to spend an extra night in the northern Serengeti also worked out wonderfully for us. We enjoyed so many amazing wildlife sightings, and on our final safari day we experienced the most emotional highlight of all: a river crossing at the Mara River! It was an extraordinary moment and the perfect finale to our safari. Our camps and lodges deserve a special mention as well. All the places we stayed were excellent, with lovely rooms / tents and very comfortable beds. The food was delicious throughout the trip and even the packed lunches on our game drives were great. We felt very well looked after at every stop. Thank you, Laurent and Praygod, for the wonderful memories. For us, this safari was perfect, and we would happily book with Tanzania Safari Experience again!

We had Kunda as a guide and what can I say? He was so devoted to his job, we loved every second, he has such big knowledge of the wilderness in Tanzania and beyond and he always added the right touch of irony to keep us laughing during the 5 day safari with him! Totally recommend, thanks a million Kunda 🙏 Also, during our planning and booking we asked sooooo many questions to Laurent and he was always there to support us with our interrogations and make the best to make our dream vacation as true as it could be. Thank you for everything guys! You did really an awesome job and we will remember this trip for a lifetime 🤗

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to do a safari before or after climbing Kilimanjaro?

Both options can work, but doing a safari before Kilimanjaro is ideal for travelers who want to experience Tanzania’s wildlife while they are still fresh and comfortable. You can enjoy game drives, beautiful scenery and relaxed lodge stays before beginning the physical challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

A safari before the climb also gives you time to settle into Tanzania, recover from your international flight and adjust to the local environment before starting your trek. This itinerary is designed to avoid unnecessary exhaustion, with a relaxed first day and a shorter game drive on the final day before returning to Arusha.

How many days do I need for a safari before climbing Kilimanjaro?

For most travelers, three to four days is an excellent amount of time for a safari before Kilimanjaro. It allows you to visit some of Northern Tanzania’s most famous wildlife destinations without making the itinerary too long or too tiring before your climb.

A 4-day safari gives you enough time to enjoy Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara National Park at a comfortable pace. You can experience different landscapes and wildlife areas while still having time to rest before starting your Kilimanjaro expedition.

Can I do a safari before climbing Mount Kilimanjaro?

Yes, absolutely. Combining a safari with a Kilimanjaro climb is one of the best ways to experience Tanzania in a single trip. Many travelers choose to spend a few days on safari before heading to the mountain.

This 4-day itinerary is specifically designed for people who want a safari before climbing Kilimanjaro. It starts from the Kilimanjaro area, includes three major wildlife destinations and finishes in Arusha, where you can rest before beginning your mountain adventure.

Which parks are best to visit before climbing Kilimanjaro?

Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara National Park are excellent choices for a short safari before Kilimanjaro.

Tarangire is famous for elephants, baobab trees and beautiful savannah landscapes. Ngorongoro Crater is one of Tanzania’s best-known wildlife destinations and offers excellent opportunities to see a wide variety of animals in a relatively small area. Lake Manyara is ideal for a shorter final game drive because it is conveniently located along the route back to Arusha.

Together, these three destinations provide a varied safari experience without requiring the much longer driving distances involved in reaching the Serengeti.

Will the safari make me tired before climbing Kilimanjaro?

This itinerary is designed specifically to reduce unnecessary fatigue before your climb. The first day is simply a transfer from the Kilimanjaro area to Karatu with no game drive, giving you time to relax and recover after your journey.

The main game drives take place on Days 2 and 3, while Day 4 includes only a few hours in Lake Manyara before returning to Arusha. You will also stay around Karatu for several nights, which means less packing, less changing hotels and a more comfortable overall experience.

Although safari days can still involve several hours in a vehicle, the schedule is much more relaxed than a long Serengeti itinerary.
