Trip Overview

An 8 Days Kenya Safari Experience is ideal for travelers who want serious wildlife time in the Maasai Mara followed by a slower beach stay on the Indian Ocean without trying to squeeze too many destinations into one trip.

This itinerary gives you three nights in the Maasai Mara, including two complete game drive days. That matters because wildlife does not follow a timetable. Having more than one day gives you time to search properly for lions, elephants, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, buffalo, hippos and, during the right months, the Great Migration.

After the safari, you fly from the Maasai Mara toward Diani Beach rather than spending another long day traveling by road. You then have two full days at Southern Palms Beach Resort where there is no safari schedule to follow. You can rest, swim, enjoy the resort or arrange optional activities around Diani.

In our experience at Tanzania Safari Experience, this balance works particularly well for couples, honeymooners, families and first time East Africa visitors who want wildlife but do not want every day of their holiday to involve packing, driving and changing accommodation.

Day-by-Day Itinerary 8 Days Kenya Safari Experience — Kenya Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

DAY 1

Transfer From Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Nairobi

Your Kenya Safari Experience begins when you arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. After completing immigration, collecting your luggage and leaving the arrivals area, you will be met for your private transfer into Nairobi.

Depending on traffic, the journey from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to your hotel can take approximately 30 minutes to more than one hour. Nairobi traffic varies considerably according to your arrival time, so we do not recommend planning important activities immediately after an international flight.

You will check in at Nairobi Serena Hotel, where you can recover from your journey and prepare for the safari ahead. Starting with a Nairobi overnight is useful because it prevents you from combining an international arrival with a long transfer to the Maasai Mara on the same day.

Use the evening to rest, organize your camera equipment and keep anything needed during your safari somewhere easy to reach. Charging phones, cameras and power banks tonight is also worthwhile because your first proper safari journey begins the following morning.

DAY 2

Nairobi to Maasai Mara Game Reserve

Today you leave Nairobi and travel toward the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, one of Kenya’s most important wildlife areas and the main safari destination of this itinerary.

The road journey normally takes around five to six hours, although actual travel time depends on traffic, road conditions, stops and the location of your lodge. The final stages of the journey can become rougher than the main highway, so travelers should expect sections of uneven road.

As the city disappears behind you, the journey becomes part of the safari experience. Landscapes change gradually as you travel through Kenya toward the open plains surrounding the Maasai Mara ecosystem.

After arriving and settling into Masai Mara Sopa Lodge, your safari schedule will depend on the actual arrival time. If conditions allow, there may be an opportunity to begin wildlife viewing rather than simply spending the remainder of the afternoon at the lodge.

Do not judge the Maasai Mara from your first few hours. Wildlife moves constantly. One area can appear quiet and then become completely different later when predators begin hunting or herbivores move toward water.

DAY 3

Full Day Maasai Mara Experience

Your first complete day in the Maasai Mara gives you time to explore properly instead of watching the clock for another transfer.

Game drives normally begin early because mornings offer cooler temperatures and good wildlife activity. Lions and other predators may still be active after the night, while elephants, giraffes, antelopes, zebras and buffalo begin moving through the plains.

Your guide will decide the most productive areas based on current wildlife movements rather than following one fixed route. This is important because a safari is not a zoo visit. Animals move freely and yesterday’s excellent sighting may be several kilometers away today.

The middle of the day can be quieter, particularly when temperatures rise. However, midday should not automatically be considered wasted safari time. Lions often rest in the shade, elephants may gather around water, hippos remain active around rivers and unexpected sightings can still happen.

Later in the afternoon, temperatures begin falling and wildlife activity often increases again. The softer light can also be much better for photography than the harsh light around midday.

DAY 4

Second Full Day in the Maasai Mara

Your second complete Maasai Mara safari day allows you to explore areas you may not have reached yesterday and gives you another opportunity to search for species or behaviors you have not yet seen.

This extra day is one of the strongest parts of the itinerary. Travelers sometimes assume one full day in the Maasai Mara is enough because wildlife numbers are high. That assumption can easily lead to disappointment if the animals you most want to see are not close to your route on that particular day.

Your guide can use information from previous drives and current sightings to decide where to focus. You may spend time around river systems, open grasslands or areas known for predator activity depending on conditions.

Photography also becomes easier on the second day because you begin understanding how animals move. Instead of immediately taking every photograph possible, you can watch behavior, anticipate movement and wait for cleaner compositions.

If your trip takes place during the Great Migration period, today may also be used to search for large wildebeest and zebra herds. River crossings, however, are natural events and cannot be scheduled for a particular hour or guaranteed on a particular day.

Expert Recommendation from Tanzania Safari Experience

Do not rush your guide from one animal to another simply to complete a wildlife checklist. Some of the best safari experiences happen when you stay with one sighting long enough to watch what the animals actually do.

DAY 5

Fly from Maasai Mara to Diani Beach

After several days focused on wildlife, today completely changes the rhythm of your Kenya holiday as you leave the Maasai Mara and travel toward Diani Beach on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast.

You will transfer from your lodge to the appropriate Maasai Mara airstrip for your scheduled flight. Exact departure details depend on the airline and confirmed flight schedule. Flying is far more practical for this itinerary than using an entire day for the long overland journey toward the coast.

Scheduled bush flights may make intermediate stops depending on the day’s routing, so travelers should not assume every flight operates exactly like a nonstop commercial airline service. Your confirmed itinerary will provide the final flight arrangements.

Once you arrive near Diani, you will be transferred to Southern Palms Beach Resort. The safari section is now finished, so there are no early morning game drives or long road transfers planned for the next two days.

Southern Palms Beach Resort operates on an All Inclusive basis for this itinerary, allowing you to enjoy your beach stay without repeatedly planning meals during your final days in Kenya.

DAY 6

Free Day Enjoying Diani Beach

Today is intentionally left free so you can decide how active or relaxed you want your Diani Beach stay to be.

After several safari mornings, many of our guests appreciate having no alarm clock and no departure time. You can have breakfast slowly, spend time around the pool, walk along the beach or simply remain at the resort.

Diani’s tides change throughout the day. At low tide the water can retreat significantly in some places, while higher tide creates very different swimming conditions. If spending time in the ocean is important to you, check local tide conditions rather than assuming the beach looks the same throughout the day.

Optional experiences around the Diani area can also be arranged depending on your interests. However, you do not need to fill every hour with excursions. This part of the itinerary is supposed to provide recovery time after the safari.

DAY 7

Second Full Day at Diani Beach

Your second full beach day gives you the freedom to enjoy Diani without worrying that your only free day has disappeared too quickly.

You may choose another relaxed resort day or arrange an optional activity. What works best depends on whether you want your Kenya holiday to finish actively or at a slower pace.

If you enjoy photography, early morning and late afternoon usually offer better light along the coast. Midday sunlight can be strong, so this is often a better time for swimming, lunch or relaxing in shaded areas.

We deliberately include two full beach days rather than only one. The first day often becomes a recovery day after safari travel. By the second morning, most travelers actually begin enjoying the slower coastal rhythm.

Best Choice

If safari is your main reason for visiting Kenya but you also want a beach extension, two complete Diani days are a sensible minimum. One day can feel more like a stopover than a proper beach stay.

DAY 8

Diani to Moi International Airport

Your final day begins at Diani Beach, with your departure time arranged around your confirmed international or onward flight schedule.

You will travel by road from Diani to Moi International Airport in Mombasa. Because the journey involves crossing from the south coast toward Mombasa and traffic conditions can vary, we plan the transfer with sufficient time rather than treating the airport as being immediately beside Diani.

Your exact pickup time will therefore depend on your airline departure time, expected road conditions and international check in requirements.

After arriving at Moi International Airport, our ground service ends and you continue with your flight home or onward journey.

Your 8 Days Kenya Safari Experience finishes after combining Nairobi, three nights around the Maasai Mara and three nights on the Diani coast into one carefully paced safari and beach itinerary.

    Great Tanzanian vacation

We toured with Tanzania Safari Experience for an eight day trip to Tanzania. Five days of safari and then three days of beach vacation in Zanzibar. They were great to work with and customized everything exactly the way we wanted it. The lodges we were booked in were all incredible, particularly the Lahia Tented Lodge in the Serengeti. Our driver, Jay, seemed to know every road in every national park and as a result the wildlife viewing was unparalleled. There were times where we were the only vehicle seeing lions or hippos. The owner, Laurent, was extremely responsive and any issues we had in-country with our logistics were immediately sorted by him. He genuinely wanted us to have a first-rate experience. The only thing we were unprepared for is that some of the days in the safari vehicle were very long (10+ hours) and the roads can be really rough. But there were plenty of cold drinks in the car and it was worth it to see the wildlife. The safari/beach split was a great way to do the vacation and the beaches of Zanzibar were beautiful with clear blue water.

    Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

Everything You Need to Know About Your Safari

Every safari adventure begins with a question. Whether it’s your first or second time, it’s natural to wonder about the best time to visit, what to pack, or how the journey works. Here, we’ve answered the most common questions travelers ask before booking their Tanzania safari, so you can plan with confidence and look forward to unforgettable memories.

This itinerary works because it concentrates your safari time where it matters rather than using your eight days to rush between several national parks. You receive meaningful time in the Maasai Mara, then change pace completely with a Diani Beach stay before departure.

A common mistake when planning a one week Kenya safari is believing that visiting more destinations automatically produces a better trip. In reality, each additional park normally means another transfer, another hotel check in and fewer hours available for game viewing.

For this itinerary, we prefer giving the Maasai Mara enough time. You arrive on Day 2 and have complete safari days on Days 3 and 4. That provides several different opportunities to explore because wildlife sightings can change dramatically from one game drive to another.

The second half of the itinerary is deliberately less structured. Diani gives you time to rest after early safari mornings, dusty roads and long hours inside the safari vehicle.

Expert Recommendation from Tanzania Safari Experience

For an eight day Kenya trip combining safari and beach, we would rather give you three nights in the Maasai Mara and three nights in Diani than add another park simply to increase the number of destinations listed in the itinerary.
