Day-by-Day Itinerary 5 Days Tanzania Budget Safari With Serengeti — Tanzania Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire, then onward to Karatu

On our first morning, we leave the bustling streets of Arusha behind. The air cools down as we drive southwest towards Tarangire National Park, a place famous for its massive baobab trees and heavy concentration of elephants.

Our team will guide you through the park’s riverbeds where families of elephants dig for hidden water under the dry sand. You will watch mothers teaching their babies how to use their trunks, all while majestic martial eagles circle above. The landscape here feels prehistoric.

The Tarangire to Karatu Transition

The Tarangire direct answer: Our journey kicks off with iconic baobab trees and massive elephant herds in Tarangire, followed by a scenic drive up the Great Rift Valley wall to spend the night in Karatu.

After an intense afternoon tracking wildlife along the Tarangire River, our 4×4 safari customized vehicle winds up the spectacular Great Rift Valley escarpment. The air changes from the dry heat of the lowlands to the cool, breezy climate of the highlands. We make our way to the colorful market town of Mto wa Mbu and settle down for the evening at Fanaka Lodge and Campsite in Karatu.

Local Expert Pro-Tip: The Banana Wine Tasting

While most tourists stay inside their vehicles when passing through Mto wa Mbu, our guides know a small, community-run farm just five minutes from Fanaka. If we arrive before dusk, we can walk down to taste local red bananas and sample traditional mbege (banana beer). It supports the local farming families directly and gives you a taste of authentic local life.

Day Highlights:
  • Transfer to Tarangire National Park
  • Game drive in Tarangire National Park
  • Transfer to Karatu

Day 2: Scaling the Crater Rim to Reach the Endless Serengeti Plains

We wake up early to the smell of fresh Tanzanian coffee brewed by our safari chef. Today is a driving day, but every hour on the road is a visual feast. We climb past the lush farmlands of Karatu, crest the mist-covered rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, and descend into the vast, dry plains of the Serengeti.

The word Serengeti comes from the Maasai word Siringet, which means “the place where the land moves on forever.” As your driver, I love watching the look on our guests’ faces when the trees disappear and the horizon stretches out infinitely.

The Route to Seronera

The Serengeti transit direct answer: Travel across the Ngorongoro Conservation highlands, passing traditional Maasai bomas, before descending into the endless golden grasslands of the central Serengeti to pitch our tents at Seronera.

We stop at the famous Naabi Hill Gate for a quick lunch box while our guide registers our park permits. While waiting, we can hike up the small rocky hill (known locally as a kopje) at the gate to view the vast golden sea of grass stretching out into the distance.

From there, we do an en-route game drive into the central region, tracking leopards along the sausage trees of the Seronera River Valley. Tonight, we sleep deep inside the park at the Seronera Public Campsite.

Budget vs. Luxury Camping Reality Check

Let us be honest about what public camping inside the Serengeti looks like:

  • Public Campsite (Serengeti): Unfenced grounds. Shared brick bathroom facilities with solar showers (often cold or lukewarm). A common dining hall protected by metal mesh to keep curious hyenas away from food. You hear the wildlife breathing outside your tent.

  • Luxury Tented Camp: Private canvas cabins with wooden floors, en-suite flush toilets, bucket showers filled with hot water by camp staff, and formal multi-course dinners inside carpeted dining tents.

Our guests always choose the public campsite because the proximity to nature is unmatched. You are truly part of the ecosystem.

Day Highlights:
  • Transfer to Ngorongoro Conservation Area
  • Transfer game drive to Central Serengeti

Day 3: A Full Day in the Heart of the Seronera Valley

Today is pure exploration. We do not move camps, which means we can pack our day with early morning and late afternoon game drives when the predators are most active.

The Seronera Valley is globally famous for its resident big cats. The permanent water sources here ensure that lions, leopards, and cheetahs stay in this area throughout the entire year, regardless of where the great wildebeest migration is located.

Navigating the Predator Capital

The full-day Serengeti direct answer: Spend the entire day tracing river loops and climbing rocky kopjes in central Serengeti, tracking prides of lions, leopards resting in trees, and swift cheetahs hunting plains game.

Our morning drive focuses on the loops around the Seronera River. We look for white bones hanging from the branches of leopard orchids, a clear sign that a leopard has dragged its kill up into the canopy.

In the afternoon, we explore the scattered rock kopjes—these ancient granite mounds act as lookout towers for lions. You will see prides lounging on the warm stones, watching the herds of zebras and gazelles moving across the plains.

Local Guide Insight: Reading the Savannah Signals

A great guide does not just look for animals; they listen to the bush. If you hear a sudden, sharp barking sound from a troop of baboons or a frantic snort from an impala, do not ignore it. That is the alarm call of the savannah. Our guides will instantly stall the engine, listen to the direction of the sound, and navigate off the main path to find the hidden predator causing the panic.

Day Highlights:
  • Full-day game drive in Serengeti

Day 4: Serengeti Sunrise to the Mist-Covered Ngorongoro Rim

We start our game drive at 6:00 AM, before the sun breaks over the horizon. The early morning air is cold, and the savannah is filled with dew. This is the prime hour to catch lions or spotted hyenas finishing up their nightly hunts before the sun gets too hot.

After a late morning brunch back at our camp, our chef packs up our tents, and we begin our steady game drive back out towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Moving Up to the Crater Rim

The Ngorongoro rim transit direct answer: Enjoy a final morning game drive out of the Serengeti, then ascend the steep, rocky walls of the Ngorongoro crater rim to camp high up at Simba Campsite.

As we drive out of the Serengeti plains, the landscape changes back into rugged highlands. We ascend the steep dirt track up to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, sitting at an elevation of nearly 2,400 meters above sea level.

We set up our camp at Ngorongoro Simba Campsite. This campsite sits right on the edge of the rim, offering a birds-eye view into the massive volcanic caldera below.

Preparing for the Cold at Simba Camp

Because Simba Campsite sits high up on the mountain rim, the clouds often roll directly through the camp. It can drop down to 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) at night.

Packing Checklist for Simba Campsite Purpose in the Camp
Heavy fleece jacket or down coat Essential for sitting around the evening campfire.
Beanie and warm socks Keeps your extremities warm inside the sleeping bag.
Good quality headlamp Essential for navigating the campsite to the bathroom at night.
Wet wipes The water at Simba camp is icy cold; wet wipes are great for a quick clean.

Day 5: Exploring the Ngorongoro Crater Floor and Returning to Arusha

Our final day is an early descent into one of the most unique wildlife sanctuaries on Earth. The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact, unfilled volcanic caldera. It forms a natural bowl about 20 kilometers wide, containing over 25,000 large mammals.

We drive down the steep, winding descent road as the morning fog clears, revealing a paradise of green pastures, soda lakes, and acacia forests.

The Final Game Drive

The Crater descent direct answer: Descend 600 meters down into the volcanic caldera for a morning tracking endangered black rhinos and massive tuskers, before driving back to Arusha town by afternoon.

Inside the crater floor, wildlife is everywhere. Because the animals are enclosed by the 600-meter-high volcanic walls, they are incredibly habituated to vehicles.

We will drive near herds of wildebeest and old bull elephants with tusks that nearly touch the ground. Our main goal today is to find the rare, critically endangered black rhino, which finds safety in the open plains of the crater floor.

After an extensive five-hour exploration and a picnic lunch near the hippo pool, we ascend the crater walls and begin our three-hour drive back to Arusha, arriving by late afternoon.

Day Highlights:
  • Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive
  • Drive Back to Arusha

    Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

An absolutely brilliant tour / travel company

What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises. Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri Harvey
