Day-by-Day Itinerary 7-Day Serengeti Migration Fly-in Safari from Arusha — Tanzania Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

Day 1: Fly from Arusha to Northern Serengeti (Kogatende)

Your safari begins in the morning with a transfer to Arusha Airport for your flight to Northern Serengeti. The flight itself is part of the experience because you can clearly see how Tanzania changes from towns and farms into endless wild plains as you approach the Serengeti.

Once you land at Kogatende Airstrip, your guide will be waiting for you. From there, you immediately start your first game drive inside Northern Serengeti. This area is famous for the Great Migration, especially during the river crossing season when wildebeest and zebras gather near the Mara River.

The first drive is often very active. You may see elephants moving across the plains, giraffes feeding calmly, and herds of wildebeest spreading across the grasslands. In the late afternoon, you continue exploring before heading to your camp for dinner and overnight at Safari Haven Camp.

Day Highlights:
  • Transfer to Northern Serengeti
  • Game drive in Northern Serengeti
  • Wildebeest migration game drive

Day 2: Full Day Game Drive in Northern Serengeti

The second day is fully dedicated to exploring the Northern Serengeti ecosystem. This is the most dramatic part of the migration route, where thousands of wildebeest and zebras move between Tanzania and Kenya in search of fresh grazing.

Most of the day is spent following herd movement and positioning around key river crossing points. The Mara River is unpredictable, and sometimes herds gather for hours before suddenly deciding to cross. When it happens, the energy changes completely as crocodiles, currents, and panic turn the moment into one of the most intense wildlife scenes in Africa.

Even when there are no crossings, the area remains highly active. Lions often patrol near migration paths, and hyenas and leopards follow closely behind the herds.

Dinner and overnight at Safari Haven Camp.

Day Highlights:
  • Game drive in Northern Serengeti
  • Mara River game drive
  • Wildebeest migration game drive

Day 3: Full Northern Serengeti Exploration

This day continues in Northern Serengeti but with a slower and more exploratory rhythm. Instead of focusing only on river points, the drive moves across different parts of the region, including open plains, woodlands, and river valleys.

You may encounter large buffalo herds, elephants crossing the grasslands, and predators resting after night hunts. The beauty of this day is unpredictability. Some of the most memorable sightings often happen far away from the river, where the migration stretches out across the plains.

By late afternoon, you return to Safari Haven Camp for another night in the wild.

Day Highlights:
  • Game drive in Northern Serengeti
  • Wildebeest migration game drive

Day 4: Northern Serengeti to Central Serengeti (Game Drive Transfer)

After breakfast, you begin a slow game drive as you move south toward Central Serengeti. This journey is not just a transfer; it is a continuous safari through changing landscapes and wildlife zones.

As you leave Northern Serengeti, the wide open plains gradually shift into the central ecosystem of Seronera. Along the way, wildlife is constantly present. It is common to see lions resting in the shade, cheetahs scanning the horizon, and large herds of wildebeest and zebras moving across the plains.

By late afternoon, you arrive at Tukaone Weavers Camp in Central Serengeti, where you settle in for dinner and overnight.

Day Highlights:
  • Transfer game drive to Central Serengeti
  • Game drive in Central Serengeti

Day 5: Full Day in Central Serengeti

This day is spent exploring Central Serengeti, one of the most reliable wildlife regions in Africa. The Seronera Valley is known for its permanent water sources, which attract animals throughout the year, even outside the migration season.

The area is especially good for predator sightings. Lions are often seen resting on rocky outcrops known as kopjes, while leopards can sometimes be spotted in acacia trees near riverbanks. Cheetahs are also commonly seen in open grasslands where they hunt gazelles.

Game drives continue throughout the day with breaks for lunch in the bush before returning to Tukaone Weavers Camp in the evening.

Day Highlights:
  • Full-day game drive in Serengeti

Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater Safari and Overnight at Karatu

You leave Serengeti early in the morning and drive toward Ngorongoro Conservation Area. After descending 600 meters into the crater, you begin a full day of game viewing inside one of Africa’s most unique wildlife environments.

The crater floor is home to an incredible density of animals, including lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, hippos, and the rare black rhino. Because the area has water and food throughout the year, wildlife remains within the crater, making sightings very consistent.

You explore different habitats inside the crater, from open grasslands to swamps and a soda lake that attracts flamingos. After a picnic lunch, you continue game viewing before ascending in the afternoon and driving to Eileen Tree Inn in Karatu for dinner and overnight.

Day Highlights:
  • Full-day Ngorongoro Crater safari

Day 7: Tarangire National Park and Departure

After breakfast, you head to Tarangire National Park for your final safari experience. This park is known for its ancient baobab trees and large elephant populations, especially during the dry season when animals gather around the Tarangire River.

The game drive here offers a calm but beautiful ending to the safari. You may see elephants moving in family groups, giraffes walking through open woodlands, zebras grazing near the river, and lions resting in the shade.

After a final picnic lunch inside the park, you begin your drive back to Arusha. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport for departure.

Day Highlights:
  • Transfer to Tarangire National Park
  • Game drive in Tarangire National Park

Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

An absolutely brilliant tour / travel company

What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises. Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri Harvey
