Tour Overview

A 7-day Kenya & Tanzania safari combines Maasai Mara, Central Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire in one journey, starting in Nairobi and finishing in Arusha.

This route suits couples, friends, and families who want to experience both countries within a week. Two nights in the Mara and two in Central Serengeti give you a full exploration day in each, followed by the crater and Tarangire’s elephant country.

The appeal is the variety: open grasslands, rocky outcrops, a wildlife-filled volcanic crater, and baobab woodland. The seven days include your Nairobi arrival and transfers between destinations, so the itinerary balances wildlife viewing with the time needed to move comfortably between them.

At Tanzania Safari Experience, we recommend a flight-assisted connection between the Mara and Serengeti for this short route. We then choose accommodation around your game-drive areas and onward journey, keeping the focus on time with wildlife.

Quick Safari Overview

This seven-day safari follows a one-way route through Kenya and northern Tanzania, with six overnight stays and four wildlife destinations. It works best for travelers comfortable with early starts and an active schedule. A flight-assisted cross-border transfer helps make room for meaningful game drives in both countries.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Nairobi

Nairobi City Full Board

On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, meet your transfer representative and continue to your Nairobi hotel. The journey varies with the hotel’s location and city traffic; we choose the overnight stop with both your arrival and tomorrow’s departure in mind.

Today gives you time to recover from your international flight, shower, and settle into the local time zone. If you arrive early, there may be room for a relaxed meal or an optional Nairobi activity, depending on your interests.

Before dinner, keep your camera, binoculars, and travel documents ready for the morning. If your safari includes light-aircraft flights, pack to the confirmed baggage allowance from the beginning. Your first overnight is in Nairobi.

Day 2

Nairobi to Maasai Mara

After breakfast, travel to Maasai Mara. By road, allow approximately five to six hours to the reserve area, with additional time possible for traffic, breaks, and the journey to your particular camp. The drive passes through changing highland and Rift Valley landscapes.

For a fly-in version, transfer to Wilson Airport and take a scheduled flight to an airstrip serving your camp. Wilson is a different airport from Jomo Kenyatta, where you arrived yesterday. The flight can save several hours of road travel, although airport and airstrip transfers still need to be included in the day.

After reaching the Mara, meet your guide or continue with your road-safari guide and begin exploring as the schedule allows. Look for zebra, giraffe, antelope, elephants, and predators; the route follows current wildlife activity rather than a fixed sequence of sightings.

Settle into your lodge or tented camp for dinner and your first Mara overnight. We recommend a location with convenient access to the areas you will explore tomorrow, so the morning begins with wildlife viewing rather than a lengthy commute.

Day 3

Full Day in Maasai Mara

An early start puts you in the reserve during the cooler part of the day. Your guide looks for fresh tracks and follows recent sightings, with opportunities to observe lions, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, and the plains animals that support the predators.

With a packed lunch, you can explore farther from camp and eat at a designated picnic area. Alternatively, a morning drive, lunch at camp, and an afternoon outing may suit families or travelers who prefer a midday break. Your camp’s location helps determine which arrangement works well.

During roughly July to October, migration herds may be present in the Mara. Their movements depend on rainfall and grazing, and a river crossing cannot be scheduled. We shape the day around the wildlife actually present, rather than spending all your time waiting for one event.

Return to the same camp for your second night. Staying in one place means less packing and gives your guide time to build on the previous day’s observations. Bring binoculars even if you carry a camera: they make distant behavior much easier to follow.

Day 4

Maasai Mara to Central Serengeti

After breakfast, begin your transfer into Tanzania. For this itinerary, our recommended arrangement is a flight-assisted connection: fly from a Mara airstrip to Migori, transfer by road through the Isebania/Sirari border, and continue from Tarime by aircraft to a suitable Serengeti airstrip. Published airline connections use this flight-and-road arrangement.

This remains a travel day. Airstrip transfers, flight check-in, immigration, and possible intermediate stops all form part of the journey. We confirm the operating connection for your dates and show the flight sectors and ground transfers in your proposal.

On arrival in Central Serengeti, meet your Tanzania guide and continue toward camp, with wildlife viewing as time allows. The open plains and rocky outcrops provide a different setting from the Mara, and your first sightings may begin during the transfer from the airstrip.

Spend the night at a lodge or tented camp in the central area. Keep your passport and required travel documents in your hand luggage. A comfortably timed arrival and a good meal prepare you for tomorrow’s full Serengeti day

Activities: Full Day Game Drive In Serengeti Central

Day 5

Full Day in Central Serengeti

Today is dedicated to Central Serengeti, including the Seronera area and other accessible habitats chosen by your guide. An early departure gives you time to look for predators before the day warms, then follow whatever wildlife activity develops across the plains and river valleys.

Resident wildlife makes the central region rewarding beyond the seasonal migration. Lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hippos, and antelope may feature during your drives. Leopards and cheetahs require patience, suitable conditions, and careful observation; each sighting adds its own direction to the day.

A packed lunch allows a longer circuit, while returning to camp can provide a useful break. For photographers, we recommend staying with an interesting subject when conditions are good. Watching a pride interact or an elephant family move together can produce stronger images than rushing between sightings.

An optional sunrise balloon safari can be arranged in advance, subject to availability and flying conditions, and is quoted separately. Otherwise, continue with your guided game drives and return to the same Central Serengeti camp for your second night.

Activities: Full Day Game Drive In Serengeti Central

Day 6

Central Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater Full Board

Leave Central Serengeti early with breakfast arrangements and a packed lunch prepared. Allow roughly three to four hours toward the Ngorongoro highlands, depending on your camp, road conditions, and stops. Entry formalities and the descent add time before the crater-floor game drive begins.

The journey crosses open plains before climbing into cooler highland scenery. We keep wildlife stops purposeful this morning so there is enough time to explore the crater. A warm layer is useful for the highland portion, especially early in the day.

Inside the crater, explore grassland, wetland, and forest habitats while looking for lions, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, elephants, and other resident animals. Black rhino is an important species to look for here, although a sighting remains a matter of wildlife movement and visibility.

After your game drive and picnic lunch, ascend and continue to Karatu for dinner and your overnight stay. This is one of the itinerary’s longer days. Karatu provides a practical resting point before traveling toward Tarangire tomorrow.

Activities: Game Drive In Ngorongoro Crater

Day 7

Tarangire Game Drive and Return to Arusha

After breakfast in Karatu, travel to Tarangire National Park. Allow approximately two hours to the park entrance, with timing depending on your lodge and the gate used. The landscape changes again as you reach warmer woodland and baobab country.

Your game drive focuses on accessible areas with promising wildlife activity. Elephants are a major attraction, alongside giraffes, zebra, antelope, birds, and possible predators. During the dry season, animals concentrate around the Tarangire River as surrounding water sources diminish.

Enjoy a picnic lunch and continue exploring within the time available. Your guide balances the final sightings with the drive back to Arusha, which generally takes around two and a half to three and a half hours from the park.

The safari finishes in Arusha. An airport transfer, an Arusha overnight, or onward travel to Zanzibar can be arranged around your next booking. Share your departure details before confirming the itinerary so we can give both the game drive and the onward journey enough time.

    Great Tanzanian vacation

We toured with Tanzania Safari Experience for an eight day trip to Tanzania. Five days of safari and then three days of beach vacation in Zanzibar. They were great to work with and customized everything exactly the way we wanted it. The lodges we were booked in were all incredible, particularly the Lahia Tented Lodge in the Serengeti. Our driver, Jay, seemed to know every road in every national park and as a result the wildlife viewing was unparalleled. There were times where we were the only vehicle seeing lions or hippos. The owner, Laurent, was extremely responsive and any issues we had in-country with our logistics were immediately sorted by him. He genuinely wanted us to have a first-rate experience. The only thing we were unprepared for is that some of the days in the safari vehicle were very long (10+ hours) and the roads can be really rough. But there were plenty of cold drinks in the car and it was worth it to see the wildlife. The safari/beach split was a great way to do the vacation and the beaches of Zanzibar were beautiful with clear blue water.

    Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Makes This Kenya & Tanzania Safari Worth Doing?

Combining Kenya and Tanzania gives you different perspectives on the Mara–Serengeti ecosystem, then adds the distinct environments of Ngorongoro and Tarangire. The Mara and Serengeti share many species, but their scale, terrain, and daily sightings differ. The strongest reason to combine them is the overall experience rather than a longer species checklist.

In the Mara, rolling grasslands make it rewarding to watch animals moving through open country. Central Serengeti adds wider horizons, river valleys, and kopjes—the rocky outcrops where predators sometimes rest or watch their surroundings.

Ngorongoro changes the setting completely. You descend into a contained landscape of grassland, wetland, and forest, with wildlife spread across the crater floor. Tarangire finishes the safari among baobabs, woodland, and the river that becomes particularly important during the dry season.

Destination What it adds to your safari How to approach the visit
Maasai Mara Open-country wildlife viewing, predators, and seasonal migration herds Give your guide time to follow animal behavior
Central Serengeti Broad plains, kopjes, river habitats, and resident wildlife Explore from a well-positioned camp over two nights
Ngorongoro Crater Several habitats within one crater-floor game drive Leave Serengeti early to preserve your viewing time
Tarangire Elephants, baobabs, woodland birds, and seasonal river concentrations Balance the game drive with your final transfer

Expert Recommendation from Tanzania Safari Experience: If photography or a slower pace is your priority, add a third night in either the Mara or Serengeti. An extra morning in a productive area often contributes more than another destination.

When Is the Best Time for This Safari?

July to October is a strong overall choice for this combined route, with generally drier conditions, productive Tarangire river areas, and the possibility of migration herds in the Mara. Other months can also offer rewarding wildlife viewing. The best dates depend on whether your priority is general wildlife, greener scenery, or migration-focused travel.

Travel period Likely conditions How it affects this route
January–February Often useful dry intervals; southern Serengeti calving activity Good for resident wildlife, but dedicated calving trips need time around Ndutu
March–May Increasing rain, especially during the long rains Greener scenery and potentially attractive accommodation rates; allow more road flexibility
June Transition toward drier conditions A useful option for general wildlife, with migration location checked for your dates
July–October Generally dry, with dust and busy popular sightings Strong fit for the route; reserve preferred camps and connections early
November–December Short rains are possible, with improving green landscapes Rewarding for scenery and birds; festive dates can carry higher accommodation demand

The main calving grounds are in the southern Serengeti ecosystem around Ndutu. Tanzania’s tourism authority places the usual calving period there between January and March. Two Central Serengeti nights provide a different focus, so we would adjust the overnight locations if calving were your main reason for traveling.

Likewise, a Central Serengeti stay does not put you beside the northern Mara River crossing sites. For a safari centered on river crossings, we recommend additional nights in the relevant northern area, chosen around the travel month and current herd movements.

Expert Recommendation from Tanzania Safari Experience: Choose the month and wildlife priority together. General wildlife viewing suits this four-destination route; a migration-focused safari benefits from more time in the area where the herds are expected.

How Do the Cross-Border Transfer and Airport Arrangements Work?

A combined safari needs coordinated flights, ground transfers, immigration, and guides on both sides of the border. The Mara–Serengeti connection can use Migori and Tarime with a road transfer between them. Available services depend on the date and airline, so we confirm the connection before finalizing accommodation and onward travel.

Your guide in Kenya and your guide in Tanzania may be different people. For the flight-assisted route, the handover forms part of the transfer arrangements, with a Tanzania safari vehicle meeting you at the Serengeti airstrip.

Entry permission for Kenya and Tanzania is assessed separately. Check the official Kenya eTA portal and Tanzania Immigration visa portal for the requirements applying to your nationality. We provide your confirmed itinerary and accommodation details for the relevant travel preparations.

The airport names also matter. Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta and Wilson airports serve different purposes in this itinerary. At the Tanzania end, Arusha Airport and Kilimanjaro International Airport are separate locations, so the correct arrival or departure airport must appear in your transfer plan.

Where Should You Stay on This Route?

Accommodation location affects how much time you spend viewing wildlife and how much time you spend reaching it. We recommend one Nairobi night, two Mara nights, two Central Serengeti nights, and one Karatu night. The individual properties depend on availability, budget, room arrangements, and the areas your guides will explore.

A tented camp can offer a proper bed, private bathroom, hot shower, and restaurant service. The word “tented” describes the construction; it does not automatically mean basic camping. Facilities vary by property, so we explain the comfort level of the camps in your proposal.

In the Mara, consider access to the reserve and the camp’s nearest airstrip. In Central Serengeti, a suitably positioned camp makes early drives and the onward Ngorongoro journey easier. Karatu works well after the crater because it places you on the route toward Tarangire.

For families, we check room configurations and age policies. For couples, we can prioritize privacy and quieter camp settings. Tell us whether a pool, dependable charging, or particular meal arrangements matter to you, so those preferences shape the accommodation selection.

What Determines the Cost of a 7-Day Kenya & Tanzania Safari?

The price depends on your dates, accommodation, group size, room configuration, and transfer arrangements. Safari flights and the cross-border connection are important parts of the total. Tanzania Safari Experience prepares a quote around the actual route and available services, so you can see the cost of the complete journey.

Sharing a private vehicle can spread guiding and vehicle costs across more travelers. Accommodation, flight seats, and many entry charges are still priced per person or room, so the total does not reduce evenly as the group becomes larger.

Your proposal should clearly identify the six overnight stays, meal plans, guided game drives, park and conservation-area charges, crater access, airport transfers, and flight sectors. It should also explain separately quoted items such as international flights, entry documents, tips, drinks, balloon rides, and beach extensions.

Best Value Recommendation: Choose well-positioned accommodation before upgrading the room category. On a short safari, convenient access can give you more useful time in the park every day.
