8 Days 7 Nights Tanzania Safari

Yes. Eight days is enough for a well planned Tanzania safari and Zanzibar combination when you concentrate the safari on Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti and use a flight between Serengeti and Zanzibar. Trying to include too many safari destinations would make the trip significantly more rushed.

The key is understanding that eight days does not mean eight safari days.

In this itinerary, the first day is primarily arrival, Days 2 to 5 contain the safari experience, Days 6 and 7 are full Zanzibar days and Day 8 is departure.

That balance works well for travelers who want wildlife and beach without extending their trip to ten or twelve days.

If your only priority is safari, we would use those Zanzibar days differently and spend additional time in the Serengeti or another wildlife area.

Two nights in Serengeti give you an evening game drive after arrival, a full wildlife viewing day and another morning safari before departure. That is much stronger than driving into the park one afternoon and leaving again the following morning.

The Serengeti covers an enormous area.

Animals do not stay beside the main roads, and good wildlife viewing frequently requires patience.

A leopard may take hours to locate. Lions may be sleeping during your first game drive and active the following morning. Cheetahs may move many kilometers while searching for prey.

Spending more time gives your guide more opportunities to respond to what is actually happening instead of following a rigid schedule.

This is particularly important for photographers and travelers interested in animal behavior rather than simply checking species off a list.

This itinerary gives you opportunities to see elephants, lions, giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras, hippos, hyenas, cheetahs and many antelope species. Leopards and black rhinos are also possible, but wildlife sightings should never be guaranteed.

Tarangire is particularly strong for elephants.

Ngorongoro gives you a high concentration of different species within the crater.

Serengeti gives you more space, more time and excellent opportunities for big cats and plains wildlife.

If your safari dates correspond with the Great Migration, the itinerary may need to be adjusted so that your Serengeti accommodation matches where the herds are expected to be.

Possibly, but it depends entirely on your travel dates and the Serengeti region used in your itinerary. The Great Migration moves through different parts of the Serengeti ecosystem during the year, so staying in Central Serengeti does not automatically mean you will be close to the main herds.

This is something travelers often misunderstand.

During the calving period, approximately January through March, we normally focus more heavily on the southern Serengeti and Ndutu ecosystem.

During parts of July, August, September and October, travelers specifically interested in Mara River crossings normally need accommodation in Northern Serengeti around Kogatende.

Central Serengeti remains excellent for resident wildlife throughout the year, but a migration focused itinerary should be designed around the season.

Common Mistake

Do not choose a Serengeti camp first and then hope the migration happens nearby. Choose the correct Serengeti region for your travel month first, then select the accommodation.

An 8 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar trip can be arranged throughout the year, but the best month depends on whether your priority is general wildlife, the Great Migration, Mara River crossings, calving season, photography, fewer visitors or beach conditions.

June through October generally brings drier conditions across Northern Tanzania.

Wildlife viewing can be strong because vegetation becomes thinner and animals often gather near permanent water sources.

January through March can be particularly interesting for travelers who want the southern Serengeti migration and calving season.

November and December can bring greener landscapes with seasonal rains.

April and May are generally wetter, and road conditions can become more challenging in some areas.

There is no single perfect month for every traveler.

Dry Season vs Green Season

Both periods can produce excellent safaris, but they create different experiences.

A photographer looking for green landscapes may make a different choice from someone whose only priority is Mara River crossings.

Morning vs Midday vs Evening Game Drives

Early morning is one of the best periods for safari because temperatures are cooler, photography light is generally softer and some predators may still be active. Midday is warmer and many animals rest, while late afternoon can bring another period of increased wildlife activity.

That does not mean midday should simply be ignored.

Elephants may visit water.

Leopards may be visible resting in trees.

Lions can remain close to the road even when sleeping.

A good guide works with what wildlife is doing rather than assuming every good sighting happens at sunrise.

Photography is where the time of day becomes particularly noticeable. Morning and late afternoon generally provide easier light than strong midday sun.

There is a reasonable amount of driving during the safari portion because Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti cover a large part of Northern Tanzania. The itinerary reduces unnecessary transfers by sleeping strategically and flying from Serengeti to Zanzibar rather than returning to Arusha by road.

Day 2 includes the drive from Arusha to Tarangire followed by your game drive and onward transfer toward Karatu.

Day 3 is one of the longest because you combine Ngorongoro Crater with your journey into Serengeti.

Day 4 is primarily wildlife viewing rather than destination transfer.

Day 5 includes a Serengeti game drive followed by the flight to Zanzibar.

This is why the route works.

You are moving forward rather than repeatedly returning over the same road.

Many roads inside Tanzania’s safari areas are unpaved.

During the dry season, some can become dusty and corrugated. During wetter periods, sections may become muddy and slippery.

This is normal safari travel.

Your guide uses a 4×4 safari vehicle because the road conditions require it.

If you carry expensive camera equipment, keep it covered when you are not using it. Fine dust can enter camera bags, lenses and electronic equipment surprisingly quickly.

Sunglasses are useful, and some travelers like carrying a light scarf during particularly dusty periods.

Around Ngorongoro, early morning temperatures can also feel much cooler than visitors expect, so keep a warm layer available inside the vehicle.

Accommodation should be chosen according to location as well as comfort. Staying in a better positioned camp can save significant driving time every morning and evening, particularly inside Serengeti National Park.

The supplied itinerary uses accommodation in Arusha on arrival, Eileen’s Trees Inn after Tarangire and Sidai Serengeti Camp for two nights in Serengeti.
Karatu works well before Ngorongoro because it positions you close to the conservation area.

In Serengeti, we generally prefer accommodation inside the park when possible.

A cheaper camp that requires a long drive before you reach the main wildlife areas can sometimes cost you more in lost safari time than you save on the room.

A private safari is particularly useful on an itinerary like this because you have more control over departure times, wildlife sightings, photography stops and the pace of each day.

If you find a leopard, you can choose to stay.

If your family needs a break, the guide can adjust.

If you are a photographer, you can spend longer waiting for the right angle or behavior.

Shared safaris can reduce costs, but the schedule naturally has to work for everyone in the vehicle.

For couples, families and travelers who place a high value on flexibility, we normally recommend private safari travel when the budget allows.

Pack light, comfortable clothing that works for both warm safari afternoons and cooler early mornings. Layers are more useful than one heavy jacket because temperatures can change considerably between Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Zanzibar.

Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.

For safari, neutral colored clothing is practical because it handles dust better than very bright or white clothes.

If you bring a camera, carry spare batteries and enough memory cards for several days.

A soft sided travel bag is generally easier than a large rigid suitcase, especially when your itinerary includes a light aircraft flight between Serengeti and Zanzibar.

For Zanzibar, pack light beach clothing, swimwear and suitable clothing for visiting towns and local communities.
