Trip Overview

A 5 day Kenya safari is an excellent choice if your main priority is the Maasai Mara and you want enough time for serious wildlife viewing without trying to squeeze several distant parks into a short trip.

This itinerary gives you one night in Nairobi followed by three nights in the Maasai Mara. That matters because you get two complete safari days in the reserve, plus additional wildlife viewing on your arrival day.

It works particularly well for couples, families, photographers, honeymooners, and first time safari travelers who would rather spend more time watching wildlife than constantly packing and changing lodges.

At Tanzania Safari Experience, we usually recommend this approach over trying to include Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, and several other destinations within five days. On a short safari, fewer destinations often produce a better experience.

Quick Safari Overview

A 5 day Nairobi and Maasai Mara safari gives you enough time to settle in after your international flight, travel comfortably to the Mara, enjoy two full wildlife days, and return to Nairobi without turning every day into a transfer. It is particularly strong for travelers focused on big cats and general wildlife.

Best for: First time visitors, couples, families, photographers and wildlife focused travelers
Recommended stay: 1 night Nairobi and 3 nights Maasai Mara
Best season: July to October for migration activity, although the Mara offers excellent resident wildlife throughout the year
Best wildlife experience: Lions, elephants, giraffes, cheetahs, wildebeest, zebras and possible leopard sightings
Travel style: Private road safari or fly in safari
Difficulty level: Easy
Photography: Excellent
Accommodation style: Mid range camps, comfortable tented camps or luxury lodges
Main highlight: Two complete days exploring the Maasai Mara
Value for money: Very good when wildlife viewing is the main priority

High demand: This safari books 4–8 weeks ahead during peak season (June–October).

Day-by-Day Itinerary Perfect 5 Day Kenya Safari Itinerary & Costs — Kenya Safari

Your safari is carefully planned to maximize wildlife viewing while still giving you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Here’s what you can expect day by day.

DAY 1

Transfer From Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Nairobi

Your first day is intentionally simple. We collect you from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transfer you to your Nairobi hotel so you can recover from your international journey before starting the safari. Depending on traffic and hotel location, the transfer can take roughly 30 minutes to more than one hour.

Nairobi traffic can be unpredictable, particularly during morning and evening rush periods. For this reason, we do not recommend planning a long road transfer to the Maasai Mara immediately after a tiring international flight unless your arrival time makes it practical.

After immigration and baggage collection, your driver will meet you and transfer you directly to your accommodation.

This first night also creates a useful buffer if your international flight arrives late or experiences a delay.

You can have dinner, prepare your camera equipment, charge batteries and get some proper rest before your safari begins the following morning.

For most guests, starting the safari after a comfortable night in Nairobi produces a much better first day in the Mara than beginning with several hours of road travel directly after a long flight.

DAY 2

Nairobi to Maasai Mara Game Reserve

The road journey from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara usually takes around five and a half to six and a half hours, although the final travel time depends on traffic, road conditions, your accommodation location and the reserve entrance used. The journey is approximately 250 to 300 kilometres depending on the route.

We normally recommend leaving Nairobi after breakfast so you have enough time to reach the Maasai Mara during the afternoon.

The first sections of the drive are mainly on paved roads. As you approach the Mara, road conditions become more variable, and some sections may be rougher or dusty depending on recent weather.

After arriving, you will check into your camp or lodge, have lunch depending on timing, and begin exploring the Maasai Mara.

Your first game drive immediately introduces you to one of Africa’s strongest wildlife areas.

You may encounter elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, antelope and several predator species.

The Mara is particularly famous for lions, but good sightings of cheetahs and leopards are also possible.

Wildlife is never guaranteed, which is exactly why having several days here matters.

A good guide will not simply race between reported sightings. The better approach is to read tracks, listen to guide communication, watch animal behaviour and spend time in promising areas.

You then return to your camp for dinner and your first night inside or close to the Maasai Mara.

DAY 3

Full Day Maasai Mara Experience

Your first complete day in the Maasai Mara allows your guide to plan around wildlife conditions rather than transfer schedules. You can start early when temperatures are cooler, predators may still be active and morning light is particularly useful for photography, then continue exploring different sections of the reserve throughout the day.

We normally recommend an early breakfast or packed breakfast followed by a morning departure.

Early hours are valuable because the temperature is cooler and many animals are more active.

Lions may still be moving after hunting during the night. Hyenas can be returning toward their resting areas. Cheetahs may use the cooler temperatures to move across open plains.

Photography is also easier during the softer morning light.

As the day warms, wildlife behaviour changes.

Predators often begin resting while elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelope and other herbivores continue feeding or moving toward water.

Midday is not automatically bad for wildlife viewing.

This is something travelers often misunderstand.

A leopard sleeping in a tree at noon can still provide an excellent sighting. Elephants may gather around water. Lions can change position if shade disappears.

Your guide decides whether returning to camp for lunch or staying in the reserve with a picnic gives you the better experience.

For guests who enjoy photography or watching animal behaviour, we often recommend spending more time in the field instead of automatically returning to camp because the clock says lunchtime.

The afternoon brings another change.

Temperatures begin falling and animals can become more active again.

The light also improves for photography as the sun becomes lower.

You eventually return to camp for dinner and your second night in the Maasai Mara.

DAY 4

Full Day Maasai Mara Experience

A second full day in the Maasai Mara is where this itinerary becomes much stronger than a rushed visit. Your guide can return to promising areas, explore a different section of the reserve, follow predator movements or spend more time around migration activity when conditions are suitable instead of repeating a fixed route.

Wildlife does not follow an itinerary.

One morning might produce several lions but no cheetah. Another day could completely change.

This is why we do not treat Day 4 as simply a repeat of Day 3.

Your guide uses the previous day’s observations, current wildlife information and conditions on the ground to decide where to concentrate.

If you are visiting between roughly July and October, attention may shift toward areas associated with wildebeest migration movements.

However, river crossings cannot be scheduled.

Wildebeest can gather near a crossing point for hours or even days before moving. They can also approach a river and then turn away.

Waiting is part of the experience.

Outside the main migration months, the Maasai Mara remains strong because large numbers of animals live here throughout the year.

Resident lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, hippos, antelope, hyenas and other species do not disappear when the migration moves elsewhere.

If photography is important to you, tell us before the safari.

We can plan with your guide around longer stops, positioning, lighting and animal behaviour rather than concentrating simply on seeing the maximum number of species.

You return to your accommodation in the evening for your final night in the Mara.

DAY 5

Maasai Mara Morning Game Drive to Nairobi

Your final day takes you from the Maasai Mara back to Nairobi, normally requiring around five and a half to six and a half hours by road depending on your lodge, traffic and current road conditions. Your departure time should always be planned around any international flight leaving Nairobi later that day.

After breakfast, you begin the return journey toward Nairobi.

Depending on your camp location, timing and arrangements, there may be an opportunity for some final wildlife viewing before leaving the reserve.

We do not recommend planning a tight connection between a long road transfer and an international flight.

Nairobi traffic can add significant time, particularly during busy periods.

If your international flight leaves in the evening, we calculate the departure from the Mara with a reasonable buffer.

If your flight is early, staying another night in Nairobi can be the safer and more comfortable option.

Travelers who prefer to avoid the return drive can also fly from the Maasai Mara to Nairobi.

Scheduled bush flights generally take around one hour in the air, although aircraft may stop at several airstrips before reaching Nairobi.

    Great Tanzanian vacation

We toured with Tanzania Safari Experience for an eight day trip to Tanzania. Five days of safari and then three days of beach vacation in Zanzibar. They were great to work with and customized everything exactly the way we wanted it. The lodges we were booked in were all incredible, particularly the Lahia Tented Lodge in the Serengeti. Our driver, Jay, seemed to know every road in every national park and as a result the wildlife viewing was unparalleled. There were times where we were the only vehicle seeing lions or hippos. The owner, Laurent, was extremely responsive and any issues we had in-country with our logistics were immediately sorted by him. He genuinely wanted us to have a first-rate experience. The only thing we were unprepared for is that some of the days in the safari vehicle were very long (10+ hours) and the roads can be really rough. But there were plenty of cold drinks in the car and it was worth it to see the wildlife. The safari/beach split was a great way to do the vacation and the beaches of Zanzibar were beautiful with clear blue water.

    Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

Everything You Need to Know About Your Safari

Every safari adventure begins with a question. Whether it’s your first or second time, it’s natural to wonder about the best time to visit, what to pack, or how the journey works. Here, we’ve answered the most common questions travelers ask before booking their Tanzania safari, so you can plan with confidence and look forward to unforgettable memories.

A private 5 day Kenya safari commonly starts around USD 1,500 to USD 2,000 per person for simpler accommodation, while comfortable mid range safaris may be around USD 2,000 to USD 3,000 per person. Higher end camps, flights and premium locations can push the cost above USD 3,500 per person.

These are planning ranges, not fixed prices.

The final safari cost depends heavily on your dates.

July, August, September and parts of October can be expensive in the Maasai Mara because demand is high during the migration season.

Christmas, New Year and Easter can also carry premium rates.

Group size matters as well.

Two people traveling privately must divide the vehicle, driver guide and transport costs between two guests. Four or six guests sharing one vehicle can usually reduce the price per person.

Your accommodation has an equally large effect.

A comfortable tented camp can provide good rooms, private bathrooms and excellent meals without the cost of a premium luxury property.

Luxury lodges and camps may cost several times more, especially during peak months.

A useful planning guide is:

Safari StyleApproximate Cost Per PersonTypical Experience
Budget focusedUSD 1,500 to USD 2,000Simple accommodation and private or basic safari arrangements
Comfortable mid rangeUSD 2,000 to USD 3,000Good camps, private vehicle and comfortable facilities
Upper mid rangeUSD 3,000 to USD 4,000Higher quality camps and stronger locations
LuxuryUSD 4,000 and abovePremium camps, possible flights and high service levels

Prices depend on travel dates, room arrangements, group size, camp availability and transport method.

At Tanzania Safari Experience, we prefer calculating the safari around your actual dates instead of advertising one price that only works during selected periods.
