Fly to Kogatende: Your Ultimate Guide to Northern Serengeti Flights

There is a moment when the small aircraft begins to drop over the northern Serengeti, and the land below changes from open plains into river lines, kopjes, valleys, and moving dots of wildlife. That first view already tells you why flying to Kogatende is one of the smartest ways to experience the Great Migration.

At Tanzania Safari Experience, we usually prefer flying in to Kogatende, in the northern part of Serengeti, because it helps travelers escape the long, bumpy road transfer and arrive closer to the migration action. In our opinion, by flying you already have about 30% of the safari experience before the game drive even starts. You see Tanzania from above, save valuable time, reduce fatigue, and land near one of the most dramatic wildlife regions in East Africa.

For travelers planning a Serengeti safari in 2026, Kogatende is one of the best choices when the wildebeest herds are in the north. It is especially strong from July to October, when the migration often moves around the Mara River area. This is the season many travelers dream about: large herds, river crossings, lions watching the plains, and early morning drives where every corner can change the day.

Quick direct guide

Flying to Kogatende is best for travelers who want to save time, avoid long road transfers, and stay close to the northern Serengeti migration between July and October.

QuestionBest answer
Best airport/airstripKogatende Airstrip
Best areaNorthern Serengeti
Best monthsJuly, August, September, and October
Best forGreat Migration, Mara River area, luxury or comfort-focused safari
Recommended stay3 to 4 nights in northern Serengeti
Main advantageLess road fatigue and more quality safari time
Best combinationArusha, Kogatende, Central Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Zanzibar

The main reason we recommend this route is simple. The northern Serengeti is far from Arusha by road. Driving can take a full day or more when combined with park routes, stops, dust, and changing road conditions. A flight brings you closer to the wildlife area quickly and comfortably.

This does not mean a road safari is bad. Road safaris are good for travelers who want to see the full northern circuit slowly, including Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, and Central Serengeti. But when the main goal is the Great Migration in northern Serengeti, flying to Kogatende is often the better use of time.

Why flying to Kogatende matters for Tanzania safari planning

Flying to Kogatende matters because the Great Migration is location-based. When the herds are in the north, sleeping and landing near them improves your chances of a better safari.

Many travelers imagine Serengeti as one small area. It is not. Serengeti is huge, and the distance between Central Serengeti and Kogatende can feel long, especially when roads are dry, dusty, or corrugated. If you book the wrong area during migration season, you may spend more time driving toward the action than enjoying it.

Kogatende sits in the northern Serengeti, near the Mara River region. This area becomes very important when the wildebeest and zebra herds move north. The landscape is different from the short-grass plains of southern Serengeti. Here you find rolling hills, riverine forest, open valleys, rocky outcrops, and quiet corners where wildlife can appear suddenly.

What travelers usually underestimate is the effect of distance. A safari is not only about the map. It is about light, timing, comfort, and energy. If you arrive tired after a long rough drive, you may miss the best afternoon light. If you stay too far from the river area, your guide may need to start very early and drive long distances before the real viewing begins.

Flying changes that. You arrive fresher. Your guide meets you at the airstrip. The game drive can begin almost immediately. Sometimes, within minutes of leaving Kogatende Airstrip, you may already see giraffes, elephants, buffalo, lions, or wildebeest lines moving through the plains.

Expert recommendation

In our experience, flying to Kogatende works best for travelers who value comfort, time, wildlife quality, and a smoother safari rhythm.

At Tanzania Safari Experience, we have seen how different guests react after long road transfers compared with fly-in arrivals. The difference is clear. Guests who fly in usually start the safari with more energy. They listen more closely to the guide. They enjoy the small things: the smell of dry grass, the river bends, the first lion sighting, the sound of hooves in the distance.

What many travelers do not realize is that the Great Migration is not a staged event. You do not arrive at the river and automatically see a crossing. The herds move according to grass, water, weather, pressure, and instinct. Sometimes they gather near the river for hours. Sometimes they cross when no one expects. Sometimes they move away and return later.

This is why location matters. Staying near Kogatende gives your guide more flexibility. You can check different river points, follow fresh herd movement, or spend time away from the crowded areas when needed. A good migration safari is not only about rushing to one famous spot. It is about reading the land.

If I were planning this trip for my own family, I would not drive all the way to northern Serengeti if the budget allowed flying. I would fly to Kogatende, stay at least three nights, choose a good camp in the northern Serengeti, and allow the guide enough time to follow the movement naturally.

Our honest opinion is this: if the Great Migration is the main reason for your safari, do not treat Kogatende as an optional extra. During the right season, it can be the center of the whole experience.

Where Is Kogatende Located?

Kogatende sits in the northernmost part of Serengeti National Park, near the Mara River and just south of the Kenya-Tanzania border. This area is part of the migratory path of over two million wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles, making it one of the best wildlife-viewing regions in Africa.

The landscape here is a mix of open grasslands, rocky kopjes, and riverine forests — all teeming with life. Kogatende is particularly famous for being close to the Mara River crossing points, where herds of wildebeests brave crocodile attacks to continue their annual migration. This makes it a dream destination for photographers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Flying to Kogatende vs driving to northern Serengeti

Flying to Kogatende is better for saving time and comfort, while driving is better for travelers who want a slower overland safari through several northern Tanzania parks.

OptionBest forAdvantagesWhat to consider
Fly to KogatendeMigration-focused safariSaves time, avoids long bumpy roads, starts safari fasterHigher cost than driving
Drive to northern SerengetiLonger classic safariSee more landscapes and parks on the wayLong travel time and road fatigue
Fly in and drive outBalanced safariComfort first, then overland route laterNeeds careful routing
Drive in and fly outGood for circuit safariBuilds up from Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Central SerengetiTiredness may build before migration area
Fly both waysComfort and timeBest for short, premium, or honeymoon-style tripsLess road-based scenery

We usually recommend flying at least one way when the safari includes Kogatende. For many travelers, the best route is to fly into Kogatende, spend quality time in northern Serengeti, then either fly onward or drive gradually through Central Serengeti and Ngorongoro if time allows.

The road to northern Serengeti can be beautiful, but it is not soft. Safari roads are part of the adventure, yet long distances can reduce comfort. Dust, bumps, and heat can make the day feel longer than expected. This is why we say flying gives you a real safari advantage. You protect your energy for the wildlife moments that matter most.

How to Fly to Kogatende

Getting to Kogatende is simple thanks to reliable domestic flights operated by Auric Air and Coastal Aviation, Tanzania’s leading safari airlines. These companies offer daily flights connecting Kogatende to Arusha, Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, and other airstrips within the Serengeti.

1. Arusha to Kogatende Flights

Most travelers begin their safari adventure in Arusha, the main safari hub in northern Tanzania. Flights from Arusha to Kogatende depart from Arusha Airport (ARK) and take approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Both Auric Air and Coastal Aviation operate daily flights on this route.

This is the ideal option if you’re starting your journey after visiting the Ngorongoro Crater or Tarangire National Park. It’s fast, scenic, and connects perfectly with onward flights to other parts of Tanzania.

2. Zanzibar to Kogatende Flights

If you’re enjoying the turquoise waters and white sands of Zanzibar and want to add a safari to your beach escape, you can fly directly from Zanzibar to Kogatende. The flight takes about 2 hours 15 minutes and is a popular route during the migration season.

Many travelers love this route because it combines the best of both worlds — a relaxing beach holiday followed by thrilling wildlife encounters in the Serengeti. You can literally have breakfast by the ocean and lunch among wildebeests in the savannah.

3. Dar es Salaam to Kogatende Flights

For international travelers arriving in Tanzania’s largest city, Dar es Salaam, there are connecting flights to Kogatende via Arusha or Serengeti airstrips. The total flight time is around 3 hours. This route is great for those who want to skip the long road transfers and start their safari immediately after landing in Tanzania.

4. Serengeti to Zanzibar Flights (via Kogatende)

For those already exploring the Serengeti, it’s easy to fly from Kogatende to Zanzibar after your safari. Many itineraries include this as a final leg — ending your wildlife adventure with relaxation on the beach. It’s one of the most seamless safari-to-beach connections in East Africa.

📍 Kogatende Airstrip Details

Kogatende doesn’t have a traditional airport; instead, it has a small bush airstrip designed for light aircraft.

  • Airport Code: GTZ

  • Runway: Gravel

  • Facilities: Small shaded waiting area, luggage handling zone, and safari vehicle pickup area

  • Location: Right in the wilderness, close to the Mara River

Landing at Kogatende Airstrip is a unique experience. As your plane descends, you may see giraffes walking nearby or elephants grazing in the distance. When you step off the plane, there are no fences or concrete terminals — just pure African wilderness.

Your guide from Tanzania Safari Experience will be waiting by the airstrip in a private safari vehicle, ready to take you straight into the wild. It’s the most exciting airport arrival you’ll ever have.

Best time to fly to Kogatende for the Great Migration

The best time to fly to Kogatende is usually from July to October, when the migration is commonly in northern Serengeti and the Mara River area is active.

July often marks the start of strong northern movement. The herds may be arriving from the west or central areas, depending on rainfall. The land becomes drier, and the animals move toward permanent water. This is when the northern Serengeti begins to feel alive with tension.

August is one of the most requested months. The herds may be spread across the Kogatende, Lamai, and Mara River areas. Some days feel quiet at first, then suddenly the plains fill with movement. The best guides do not only look for crossings; they look for signs: dust lines, nervous wildebeest, zebra direction, crocodile positions, and vehicle movement from far away.

September is often excellent. Many travelers think the migration has already gone to Kenya by then, but that is a misunderstanding. The Serengeti side can still be very active. Herds may cross back and forth across the Mara River, and the northern Serengeti can offer strong wildlife viewing beyond the crossing itself.

October can also be rewarding, especially earlier in the month. The area may be drier, and wildlife can concentrate around water sources. The experience often feels calmer than peak August, although movement depends on rain.

Here is the simple planning view:

MonthWhat to expectOur opinion
JulyHerds moving north, early river activityGood for travelers who want the start of the season
AugustStrong demand, active northern movementExcellent, but book early
SeptemberOften very good for crossings and herd movementOne of our favorite months
OctoberLate-season northern Serengeti, dry conditionsGood if planned carefully
NovemberHerds may begin shifting with rainsLess predictable for Kogatende
December to MarchMigration usually favors southern Serengeti/Ndutu areasBetter to plan south, not Kogatende

Nature does not follow a fixed calendar. Rain can change the route. But for a traveler planning in advance, July to October remains the strongest window for a Kogatende fly-in migration safari.

Where to Stay Near Kogatende

Kogatende is home to some of the most beautiful lodges and tented camps in the Serengeti. Many are perfectly positioned near the Mara River to offer front-row seats to the migration.

Some top picks include Mara River Camp, Sayari Camp, Lemala Kuria Hills, and Nomad Lamai Serengeti. These properties combine comfort and luxury with an authentic wilderness experience.

Each of these lodges can be included in tailor-made safari packages organized by Tanzania Safari Experience. Our team ensures every detail is handled, from your flight arrangements to your game drives, so all you have to do is enjoy the magic of the Serengeti.

Expert tips from our team

The best Kogatende safari comes from staying long enough, choosing the right camp location, flying at the right time, and allowing your guide to follow wildlife naturally.

Here are the practical tips we share with many guests:

  • Stay at least 3 nights in northern Serengeti. Migration viewing needs patience. More nights give you better chances without rushing.
  • Choose morning flights when possible. Arriving earlier gives you more useful safari time on the first day.
  • Pack soft bags, not hard suitcases. Small safari aircraft usually work better with soft-sided luggage.
  • Carry a light jacket. Northern Serengeti mornings can feel cool, especially before sunrise.
  • Do not plan your whole safari around one river crossing. The full migration experience includes movement, waiting, predator activity, dust, sound, and scale.
  • Trust the guide’s reading of the land. Sometimes moving away from a crowded river point gives a better experience.
  • Bring binoculars. Many guests underestimate how useful they are for reading distant herds and predator behavior.
  • Keep camera gear ready during transfers. Wildlife can appear between the airstrip and camp.
  • Add Central Serengeti or Ngorongoro if you have enough days. This gives balance beyond the northern migration.
  • Combine with Zanzibar after safari if you want rest. The fly-in route makes this combination smoother.

One small detail we always remind travelers: do not overpack clothes. Safari is not a fashion trip. Neutral colors, comfortable layers, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, and good shoes are enough for most days.

    Safari May 2026

This company exceeded everything we’d hoped for. From the start, the tour operator had everything covered — a detailed itinerary laid out well in advance, quick responses to any questions, and a genuine attentiveness that made the whole thing feel effortless. The accommodation was seriously impressive. Not what I was expecting at all — comfortable, well-appointed, and luxurious. We also spent time right in the heart of the bush. A proper treat. The two people who really made this trip were our guide Mariki and photographer Agnes. Mariki’s knowledge of the bush and animal behaviour is something else — he always seemed to know exactly where to go, and his instincts paid off every single time. Agnes has a brilliant eye and captured shots we could never have got ourselves. As for the wildlife — we saw far more than we ever imagined we would. Elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippos — the lot. As a first safari, I couldn’t have asked for more. Would recommend without hesitation.

Great Experience with Tanzania Safari Experience

We had an amazing safari with Tanzania Safari Experience, and honestly the whole trip was put together really well by Laurent and his team. From our first message to the last day, they were easy to reach, quick to reply, and clear about everything. The plan made sense, the timing was smooth, and we didn’t have to stress about anything. Uncle J was a big part of what made it special. He knows the parks incredibly well and seems to notice things before anyone else. He’d position the vehicle perfectly for photos and often got us to sightings before the crowds built up. We were lucky to see [your highlights: migration / lions / cheetahs / elephants / a crossing], and every drive felt exciting and different. The vehicle was comfortable and in good shape, and everything ran on schedule. If you’re looking for a well-organized safari with a great guide, I’d definitely recommend Tanzania Safari Experience.

An absolutely brilliant tour / travel company

What can I say. How do you explain PERFECTION. I will try. From the outset of our trip Ramadhan and Laurent were excellent. We gave them our requirements and budget and they prepared a program that was outstanding. The whole safari went like clockwork. We were met and briefed by Ramadhan on our arrival and introduced to our driver and guide extraordinar Ngoi. We visited Tarangier, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Absolutely brilliant trip, we saw the most extraordinary game. All the accommodation arranged for us was magnificent, especially the tented camps, where we were visited by a lion and elephant, scary but exhilarating. So if you are looking for an unforgettable experience look no further than Laurent and Ramadhan from Tanzania Safari Experience. They truly put clients first and foremost and deliver on their promises. Cheers from a very satisfied Chris and Terri Harvey

Several local carriers offer Kogatende flights, including Auric Air, Coastal Aviation, and Regional Air. Prices for flights to Kogatende vary by route and season. On average, expect to pay $250–$400 per person one way from Arusha or $350–$500 from Zanzibar. Booking in advance and traveling with Tanzania Safari Experience can help secure the best rates and flight times, especially during the busy migration months.

Yes! You can take a direct flight from Kogatende to Zanzibar, which makes it easy to combine your Serengeti safari with a relaxing Zanzibar beach holiday.
